Funny thing about kennel cough: It's a virus, not a bacteria, so antibiotics do nothing to help it, anymore than they help with our colds. Vets give antibiotics to prevent secondary infections in dogs who are weakened by it, but all you can do is help alleviate the symptoms, just like you would in a child with a cold.
@punkybeans You are correct. (smiles) I heard it was a virus from a few sources I normally use, but it seems it can be caused by many things, a variety of viruses and bacteria. Thanks for the heads up.
What did you give her? I have been trying to give my chiuahua Robbitussin cough syrup, but she just won't take it and if I happen to get at least a little bit in her mouth she spits it out. So did your dog get her health back with only the cough syrip or sis you take her to the vet too?
Yes we did take her to the vet and he told about the cough syrup (just chemist stuff) dont have anymore sorry cant remember the name. But our other chihuahua got kennel cough after this dog and she was terrible at taking the cough syrup very much like your story. Spat it up with pink bubbles coming out of her mouth. Not happy at all. All 3 of our dogs caught it and all needed the anti biotics. The cough syrup helped at night when the cough seemed much worse.
what did u give it to help???
