I'd say that the only part of the Collector's Edition of the intro that was better was when the fighters were flying by the Star Destroyer. In this version...meh.

You are right. This intro is better than the collectors edition. The only part which is inferior is the part where the fighters are passing by the star destroyer. Other than that...
Years ago. We had a flood and it wrecked my tie fighter 3.5in floppies. Among the other things we claimed for I put a claim for this game. And guess what I got 60$ that was in 1994.
Even way back then the insurance company understood the importance of this game.
...and to think when my friend first handed me the disks for this I thought it was something to do with Thai martial arts lol..oh how innocent I use to be :D
hey is there any way to roll the craft? (bank). Like in X-Wing Alliance I can control pitch, yaw, and roll. but in Tie Fighter it seems that the roll isn't there.
After playing Xwing and seeing the original 3 star wars movies this intro was epic. Suddenly the rebel alliance was no longer noble, but instead they were portrayed as cowards and terrorists :D
This game was the best game ever...it kicked ass. Nothing like it today. its all first and third person shooters that's it . Bring back the tie fighter now! : (
@paulv1973 YES! Those missions where you were flying tie defenders with Vader were incredible, especially because your wingmen ALWAYS died, and it was basically you and Vader against the entire Rebel fleet. Incredible.
Oh my god, I haven't seen this game in about 10 years and I can still hum along with the trippy Star Wars Theme/Imperial March mashup theme song MIDI no problem.
Also, is it me, or does the Imperial Senate in this cutscene look a lot like the Senate in the prequel trilogy? Did George Lucas reuse some concept art?
The best simulator game ever. Only game from Star Wars series, that I like more than this one is Republic Commando. But very true, TIE Fighter is epic. SOMEBODY MAKE REMAKE OF THAT!
Tie Fighter was way ahead of it's time, even though X-Wing came first Tie Fighter is much better. Better graphics, better gameplay, better audio, better everything. X-Wing Alliance took Tie Fighter and made it better, with the ability to control turrets, fly around inside larger space craft, and multiplayer. I'd love to see a new X-Wing/Tie Fighter game with the same gameplay.
One of the best games I've ever played, hands down. I must have been around 10 years old at the time, but I can still remember everything about the game.
i used to have this game when i was young lol but then because i got the x wing one as well same with yoda stories and some other star wars games where u ran away shootn blasters and getting lightsabers and stuff... i gave them to a friend and he stuffed em up lol i never forgave him for doing that but those games were fkn awesome
Some of the best scripted missions ever and a nice story. This game needs a new release and please do not change anything, only update sound and video.
Maybe not the best game ever made, but absolutely the best game of its genre. It's a perfect blend of a great storyline, unbeatable dogfighting, plenty of choices of how to play it, perfect use of a joystick in a game, and best of all can be completely understood by anybody even if they knew nothing about Star Wars.
When a game can stand on its own like that, you've got a winner. That's why this title is so great.
@rmenga Have you played Freespace 2? Yes, Tie Fighter is one of the best of all time, but Freespace 2 comes close in terms of flight mechanics (despite feeling a little "slippery"?). Nothing beats blasting X-Wings out of the sky in a T/A or T/D though...
yes, this was definitely the best. I tried playing a few star wars games after this, but was so disappointed. I've stayed away from them for the last 5 years for fear of being disappointed.
I fixed the 3d hardware issue and text issue on XWA, but can't fix the 3d hardware problem on Tie fighter...heh...even with plain textures it is still freaking awesome!
I loved this game. The reactive music was fantastic, the plot was great, the combat rocked. I'm at a loss as to why Lucas Arts hasn't released this thing on Steam yet.
Imagine a remade X-Wing series (X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter: Balance of Power, and X-Wing Alliance) with the engine used in The Force Unleashed!
My best memories include shooting down X-Wings in my Tie Fighter (shields are for sissies and amatuers!) and the cut scene where Darth Vader crushes a traitor using the force.
I had the Collector's CD version of this that came with a 6-pack of Star Wars games. I really wish that LucasArts would come out with a new X-Wing-style game. They could even include the prequels time period and I'd still play it.
In this game, you really get a grasp of just how much the Empire had to work to maintain Order throughout the Galaxy.
In most Campaign's, the Rebellion isn't even the main Enemy. Pirates and Imperial Traitor's are who you have to fight. I always liked riding in the Tie Interceptor, with its quads going, roaring against A-wings, that was living. I always liked how as the Empire, you could hit Shift R for reinforments from MU TAU or NU squads. There were always others there to fight with you.
I liked the Interceptors the best too. The Advanced and Defender were kind of too powerful, they made everything else obsolite. I wish they would've been more balanced.
I agree. They added to the game's storyline though and allowed the developers creativity like the traitor storylines (and making said storylines more balanced). Also, if the game used only the conventional unshielded TIEs, I think that they'd have to use swarms like in the movie (which would have been difficult given the hardware limitations of the time).
I was 12 when I this got game with a bonus X-Wing with a christmas present and a joystick and I spend my life with my friends chating and reading from my 3rd school in 1998.
I Like the music on battle 8, then I finished this game 1st all the way 13th battle in 10 months after I watch the video of tintin calculas affair for a break.
I was 14 when this game came out. My friend owned it and could go on for hours about how great it was, but I didn't have enough cash to get a copy for myself. He offered to let me play his, but I wanted the game to surprise me once I got it. I spent weeks mowing lawns and washing cars so I could buy TIE Fighter.
Finally, I brought home TIE Fighter one afternoon and popped it in. I fell in love as soon as the opening crawl: Same ol' intro music, when all of a sudden HOLY FUCK THE IMPERIAL MARCH.
I was the same age. I remember in the Summer of '94 my friend's brother got this. He had his computer and stereo all hooked up in his trailer, and we cranked it loud when we saw that intro. The Star Destroyer's engines made the room shake. We were completely blown away. On top of that...it was a stunning game.
Definetly a major contributor to my Star Wars fandom in the 90's.
Hmm... this game's plot can be linked to some pretty recent events.. ( NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOYSLY, ONLY JOKING ) At the beggining of the 21st century Taliban Terrorists aided by spies and traitors within the USA, struck a cowardly blow at the new symbol of American power, ...the twin towers! G.W. Bush brought swift justice to the terrorists by destroying their main base in Iraq. The pitiful remnants of the terrorists have now scattered to all around the middle east...
When I first played this game, I immediately loaded up a TIE Interceptor training mission 1. Then I was hooked - both to the game and the ship! The midi soundtrack of this game is excellent. The athmosphere is very strong.
too bad it want's a joistic...and I don't have a joistic for my PC ... :( If someone knows where I can download a Non-joistic TIE Fighter,I'll be very thankful .
Even though it was a rail shooter, I still think Rebel Assault II was the best of the Star Wars pilot games. Plus, it was sold with Star Wars action figures because the sales were so bad.
TIE Fighter ranks right next to Rebel Assault II, though.
@KineticFrenetic really? ick those rail-shooter games were awful. I played them and beat them (i was 14. It's what i was programmed to do :P) but man they were not fun at all!
This game beats the heck out of the Rouge Leader games, who cares about graphics the graphics this game had a lot of awesome missions and was a ton of fun.
thanks for the reply! this makes the intro even more incredible. i wouldn't have expected that floppy games had even speech output. all my old games that had that feature were cd-rom versions. how many floppies does this game use?
whoever made this game is my hero

Dang, I had the floppy disk version of this game back in the day. I mowed a lot of lawns to pay for the expansion pack one summer.
Memories... :)

I never grasped how James Earl Jones decided to lend his voice to this... It was a fun game for its time, though

Even though it was a rail shooter, I still think Rebel Assault II was the best of the Star Wars pilot games. Plus, it was sold with Star Wars action figures because the sales were so bad.
TIE Fighter ranks right next to Rebel Assault II, though.

No, TIE Fighter was THE best!

@KineticFrenetic really? ick those rail-shooter games were awful. I played them and beat them (i was 14. It's what i was programmed to do :P) but man they were not fun at all!

This game beats the heck out of the Rouge Leader games, who cares about graphics the graphics this game had a lot of awesome missions and was a ton of fun.

impressive intro for such an old game! was this recorded with the cd-rom or floppy version?
Xiaopang3333 3 years ago
Floppy disk version
rmenga 3 years ago
thanks for the reply! this makes the intro even more incredible. i wouldn't have expected that floppy games had even speech output. all my old games that had that feature were cd-rom versions. how many floppies does this game use?
Xiaopang3333 3 years ago
If I remember correctly it was 3 or 4.
