I nearly met Helen Mirren when she was just fifteen years old.

She was acting in a school play, and had all SIX of the audience spellbound, me included as we watched her on stage one Sunday afternoon in May, in an otherwise empty school in Woodford, East London. She played the part of "Julie" .. a good girl gone bad who ended up dead. Even now, I can remember the way she flounced of the stage throwing her scarf back over shoulder... matching scarves and Tam o'Shanters were quite "the thing."
