  • terrifying performance and der doppelganger is like this black cloud...so ominous, wow

  • sick

  • David Taylor (my friend) IS Mr. Bass Trombone

  • This is just great music.

  • cool

  • I'm not really familiar with the original pieces, but Loved his improv. Great tone, power & expression. Cool upload, gbone.

  • @syr1811

Expression, yes!! Too many people are bogged down in the standard ruts. I don't like every single note/miniphrase in this, but the whole is quite nice- great sound, individuality, humor, skill, eerie plunger work,...

  • @contrabassbob

And that first phrase and it's repetition a few minutes later, is awesome!

  • After over a dozen listenings, I'm still thoroughly absorbed by this.

  • Brilliant vocalizing with the plunger.

  • I like the spooky sounds he puts to it. The plunger work goes marvelously with the classical background too. Fab!!

  • Phenomenal!! Dave is the only bass trombonist who's music 'really' moves me. Just incredible! A great inspiration!

  • Im an old fasioned guy but this was absoloutely freaking awesome.

  • Okay I guess this was just not my type of solo. I have to say I really didn't like it. Several notes sounded like he was playing with his mouth closed (even though I'm sure it wasn't). Maybe it's just me, but I prefer more "normal?" solos.

  • you can almost imagine a cirle of hooded figures slowly surrounding him, closing in while he pleads for possession of his ego, but of course he has no choice in the matter...

  • have you guys ever seen freddie hubbard play in his later years? he move around like crazy

i think if a person moves while they're playing it's just the way the play the music, many people move very erratically when playing solos... besides, what does it matter? just close your eyes and listen asshole

  • What a brilliant musician-

to those who comment on his 'stage antics'-

if you've heard him play live-acoustically-

he seems to move his sound around the hall-

I think thats why he moves the bell-

Heard him play the Hovhaness concerto at

    Alice Tully-

  • omg so sick. i think ive taken the train with him but never noticed lol

  • Dave is one of the only trombonists pushing the envelope. His innovation has given him his career. Bravo to him and people that are intelligent enough to appreciate that he's trying to do something new.

As a student of his I can say that he has full command over the classical rep, and being able to play side by side with him was an ENORMOUS learning experience.

  • This should be an anti-drug comercial ending with the caption, "this is what drugs will do to your mind."

You call this crap Schubert... come on.

  • What does being full of crap have to do with his playing or this piece of music?? Your "attack" on Dave T. as a person has nothing to do with this music. If you don't like Dave T. as a person, than that's your personal issue.... keep the two separate.

  • Have you ever acutally talked to the man? He's a nice guy, and excellent trombonist, and can be really full of crap. What he does movement wise on stage has little to do with music. Not to mention that this music itself is doesn't seem to be written for an audience, but rather be above the audience.

With that said, Taylor's playing is amazing, and his dedication to communicating through the horn is also great. His antics on stage though, completley distract from all of this.

  • I think the greatest "attack" in my previous comments are on the people too involved in idol worship to see this.

  • Yes I have met him. SO have a lot of other people. The fact that you think he "full of crap" is something that should be kept out of your posting. The video has nothing to do with crap and I have no idea why you feel it's necessary to say so. I don't idolize Dave, I don't even play the trombone. I just find it unnecessary to say such comments. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then just don't say anything.

  • There are two kinds of people concerning Dave Taylor:

    1. Those who want to be Dave Taylor.

    2. Those who want to be Dave Taylor, but their musical "taste" hinders them from being honest about their jealousy.

Boo hoo, Dave Taylor doesn't play the bass trombone like the ten million other bass trombonists that are currently alive or have already lived. Good for him. He has a pair. It wouldn't hurt most of us to (musically) grow a set ourselves.

  • And what exactly is Schubert? Where would I find this Schubert you speak of?

  • Brilliant....

This is what music is all about.

  • I can appreciate certain types of music that involve the maths and magic. Personaly I don't like this improvising thing.

  • Brilliant!!! (and it is very serious!)

  • ....It's as if Dave Taylor is screaming out that he wants to be free of the conformity. When the choir comes in, it's atypical trombone sound. DT plays along, but not really --- screaming with his horn, trying to be different. All the while, there's a bag of garbage at the foot of his stand. Kind of 1984-ish. F'N BRILLIANT!

  • I think it's brilliant!!! Look at it as a painting. There's this whacky bass trombonist frantically moving around, flailing the horn, doing multiphonics, his music makes him agitated, a kind of melancholy, he doesn't want to be like everyone else.... and he's surrounded by this expressionless choir of trombonists....

  • This is serious????
