A little sad and very beautiful film, but hard to describe because it is mystified between reality and fantasy. That is to say, it's not kind of something to be fully explained, as well as "The Spirit of Beehive"

This scene is an attempted self-baptism. Angela, the girl who drowns, was seduced by Satan to do some horrible things, like wishing her mother dead. Her little sister was innocent and is spared from the effects of the deathly river in that scene. I highly recommend watching the whole movie when you get the chance.

i just caught the last few minutes of this movie on a late night channel..i never saw it..but i saw this scene. what i dont understand is..does the older sister die? why wasn't she able to swim back to her little sister? and why is the little girl starting to float in the end..any help? Thanx!

In the film, the sisters saw a saint's appearance and try to decode the hidden message from the sign, to get back the love of their mother. So the last scene looks like an ritual to purify their sins (they are not sinful of course, though). It seems to me that this last part shows that little sisters were caught by "the Big Nothing", which means death, and so they are "Angelized"...because innocence and purity is always close to death.
