While I agree with most of this, saying the education mafia is interested in a "collectivist America" is nuts. What ALL bureaucracies are interested in is a top-down, fascist structure with THEM at the top.
Ends up at the same point, I guess. But John Dewey and the others thought of themselves as Socialists and "collectivists," not Fascists. So the choice of words is hardly nuts.
(Possibly you don't know that "Bilingual Education" deals with how public schools here handle foreign-born students, often keeping them isolated from English for many years.)
Jacques Ellul in Propaganda: Critical judgment disappears altogether, for in no way can there ever be collective critical judgment....The individual can no longer judge for himself because he inescapably relates his thoughts to the entire complex of values and prejudices established by propaganda. With regard to political situations, he is given ready-made value judgments invested with the power of the truth by...the word of experts. See also Gatto-- Underground History of American Education
Any method can work; but in practice the actual motivation for this method seems to be to blur differences. The slower students can coast; the faster students won't be pushed. Dewey loved kids sitting around a table not doing much.
Thanks, Bruce, for responding. I hear that a lot of cooperative-learning scholars say that cooperative learning only works when the teacher structures "individual accountability" into the lesson, through certain types of formal and informal assessments. Thus, the slower students can't coast and forced to pull their own weight. And accountability is paramount; I think Dewey would have wanted that. Accountability will force the kids to motivate themselves or risk getting an F.
I meant to say "and are forced to pull their own weight."
The research in academic articles suggests that for cooperative learning to work, you have to have individual accountability to get rid off the "free-rider" effect.
I wonder where Texas ranks in education.

I also look forward to hearing about your experiences as a teacher and how you served in the trenches of the classroom.

Thank you for this video. I look forward to seeing the links to research articles on why cooperative-learning strategies are bad.
