As for me, Lang's facial expression is to express his feeling of the music he is playing. As we noticed, been years people critisizing it, but he keeps playing with that xpression as it does come naturally with him. Afterall, his unique expression makes me more enjoying the music he's playing.
It's the fault of the camera man. When langlang plays , the camera always concentrates on his facial expression...Langlang cannot control his face while he plays, so it's the responsibility of the camera man to focus more on his fingers so that wont distract the audience from music. It's 'camera discrimination'.
Oh please you motherfuckers stop criticizing his playing! If it was the same audio recording but a picture of horowitz in the front you all will be like ''ohh so much emotion... ohh soo good...'' oh please...
Quoting Andre Previn on Lang Lang: "It's a circus act, you know? Why doesn't he just come out and juggle? He's an amazing pianist, but I can't watch, not for one minute. And yet he is probably the biggest box-office success in the world, for a classical musician."
I love when you can see at the face of a pianist, that he loves what he is doing :D sometimes you just have to laugh, because the music you are playing is so beautiful!
Why so many people don't like Langlang's facial expression?
He didn't pay attention to his own face at all. He just feels the music in a happy and tickling way. I love his piano performance, without even able to see his face most of the time. I doubt any audience will be able to see his face, either.
I think some people only dislike this playing because of Lang Lang's facial expressions. Other than than, the music is what we should all focus on. There is 2 min and 37 sec of music and I'm sure less than 20 sec of lang lang's expressions.
I don't think much of Lang-Lang's either as a musican or as a pianist, but I was pleasantly surprised by his command of the piano part in this Trio (which has to be one of the hardest, if not THE hardest, in the entire chamber music repertory.
Of course, he can't help but looking like a clown no matter what he's performing and does so again in this performance (which, good as it is, still pales besides Argerich's DG recording)
He;s merely expressing and enjoying this piece with the uttermost concern.
People pretend to prefer the military position. Head straight, dead face; closed eyes, perfectly positioned arms and hands. WIth no sign of life to ruin the live performance... I MUCH don't care for what the pianist does while playing a piece.
If a pianist feels that helps them focus in with the music then let those mannerisms be studied. But, if they have convulsions to every key while barking crosseyed.
I can see where you are coming from Chris, but most concert pianists during the sixties did not use facial expressions because that was a part of their schooling. I feel that this added more to their charismatic demeanor, not the other way around. Rubenstein would not make these expressions because they ultimately became distracting to the artwork he would be conveying.
yeah..this the first time i saw him and his playing..at first i laughed..i really laughed especially on the introductory part. but i can say he is a turly amazing pianist. well i guess that's what music brings out in him.
bahahahahaha! not to be mean or anything, but lang lang's facial expressions never cease to make me laugh. Not saying he's a bad player or anything. I always have to close my eyes when listening to videos of him. But just to reiterate, I don't think he's a bad player although he is not my favorite he is still an exceptional pianist.
HappyWriteWhites:you don't like Lang Lang's facial expression, just close your eyes and enjoy the music or if you are as good as Lang Lang, you go up there take over his piano and play!
I mean, I love Lang Lang, I've even met him....but SERIOUSLY, his facial expressions at the start of this piece are just...rediculous.Mah, nicely played :)
Lang Lang looks like a clown while performing, but apparently that only endears him to his large following even more. Having said that, I was really impressed by this excerpt. The Tchaik Trio has to be one of the most difficult pieces for the pianist in the entire chamber music repertoire and, his odd facial expressions aside, Lang-Lang plays quite brilliantly. I just wonder is he is able to keep it up for the rest of the performance (the coda is BRUTALLY difficult!!)
happinesswhites, that's hilarious! i totally agree. there's no other explanation for such expressions, but really i think he does it because he is all about himself and never about the composer. i bet you anything he doesn't make those faces alone in his practice room. it's all for show. i think its all quite ill.
i bet he has a practise room JUST to practise those expressions! seriously, try making them yourself, it's pretty damn difficult, :).... the thing is though, those faces are a serious turn off... or do some of them out there really dig this stuff? i'm Never watching him try his hand at Beethoven, i'll probably smack my laptop or something....
relax "letthemusicflow". its not disrespectful to comment on his absurd faces. what emotion? this is all for show. this LL is a freaking clown who shows serious disrespect to the composer.
but i didnt see very many negative comments on a Yoyoma video. It's all hate; just the name Lang Lang brings so much hate now.....people dont even see his video and post mean comments.....as for his emotion, theres a video on youtube of a very young LL playing Chopin Nocturne.....under the channel Sviatoslavvv i think. This video shows that he's been making those faces since he was very young.....its not for show, its how he plays!
The balance is so off that its ridiculous - the piano player is awful .
