how long are sections of pipe?how much of gallon cement was used on this project a gallon at local box stores is almost $40. any help would be very welcomed
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! it made me smile and want one... I grew up in a handy man home and I know my husband is going to want to do this if he sees this lol.
I like that a lot. I wish I could have seen the fasteners / hardware used to secure the poles. Did you use any L brackets or did you stick with the lag bolts? Did the contact cement need to be heated up? Bottom line, it looks really solid, very well built. I love the feedback you're getting, too. Everyone loves it including me! And yes, it is refreshing to see the men care for cats. Thanks for sharing!!
What a nice man, going to all this trouble to build a cat tree! Love the recycling, your preparation and know-how. Love how 9 minutes of this video is you being a manly man, scraping and sawing and gluing and manhandling, and then in the last thirty seconds a "kitty" escapes you. *g* That is too cute. :) And the tree is gorgeous! I love how you keep the shape / sway of the wood and incorporate it into the finished tree. Nice work!
I grew up in modern cities (concrete jungles..) where people don't build their own decks or mess with wood in general. Never used anything bigger than a mini wrench to fix up Ikea furniture or ever seen my dad hold a power tool. I like cats, but I'm just really amazed at how much work you put into gathering materials & building something from scratch for your pet's enjoyment. You really love your cat! I'm sure a lot of thought was put into editing this video too, to help other people. WELL DONE!
I went to the pet store looking for one of these JEESH! over $100 bucks. Thanks for this video I'm going to chop my Neighbors tree down...shhh and get the rest of the tools thanks your too Cool!
I was thinking about using dap, but I know it gives off fumes that last for quite a long time and it can be quite leaky.. How long did you hold the carpeted parts outside before it stopped fuming and did the dap seep through the carpet at all?
That was fantastic, I cant wait to get started in mine. The pet stores charge a hundred dollars for what can be made with scraps. great video, thanks!
Thanks for the seriously good how-to video. You showed all the important steps. I've been searching the net trying to figure out how they attach the carpet to these things, and your video is the best I've found.
Good work! Although It may have cost you $40 in supplies, I definitely haven't started collecting tools yet so it would be a $1000 endeavor for me. Looks good though, I'd buy it!
this is a really cool video! cat trees can be so expensive and tacky, but the ones you make are really original and sturdy looking! great job! love it!
I was just going to order one but your video has given me the confidence to try build one myself ( with a little help from hubby)! both my cats are over 20 lbs each and I need to build one that will support their weight. I have only seen one store-bought one that appears sturdy enough. Can't wait to get started!
My shed is dangerous & will be knocked down soon by the council, its my cats entrance to my bedroom window. I wish you was my neighbour so you could help me build a cat tree tower. Your cats must love you, your so sweet -x-
did you ever consider doing this as an income? our biggest cat tree i made with trees like that and we love it...so sturdy...and you know its going to last...ours is about 6 feet and i think it was $350...nothing fancy either...just has a few shelves and a hide
Thanks for posting this video. A very innovative cat tree! I never thought that style can really look well for a cat tree. How are your cats loving their cat tree?
thats awesome i plan on making one but dont have trees and stuff around me my moms cat just died so we are getting a new one and i want to make one of these for christmas for my mom with a kitten i think that would b cool
man you r great woodwork men! is ur cats using it now? im not a woodwork men, but im good with animals, looking at tht cat u hav it seem its a layback one, so if u made one tht is long closer to ground instead of tall, it should work. ur great!
I really like that, the wood with the rot color in it looks cool when its hit with some polyurethane. You did a terrific job with the project. A person would pay a good buck
for a cat tree that big. A little bit of work, knowledge, and patients and you got one for next to nothing.
It's not really a "how to". I just show some stuff I do. You have to figure out the particulars. But each one is unique so - go for it and make your own special one!
The base was made of doubled 3/4 inch plywood which I glued and screwed together. The carpet folds over about 2 inches underneath. I cut some carpet from the top where they would sit, added some construction adhesive and angled deck screws through sides of the timber & into the base. Then I put 2 - 6" lag screws from underneath the plywood base into each of the upright pieces of timber. First I drilled pilot holes and countersink holes so the lag heads would sit sligtly into the bottom.
nice work and great result! worth mentioning the combustible nature of fumes from contact cement... thought I heard a fan running? Good use of gloves; I would recommend a mask when cutting the PVC. Very impressive!
Yes, I had some cross-ventilation going. But if I'm doing a big project, such as my wood floors, I tend to lean to water based - because of pilot lights etc in the house. I think the contact cement comes in a safer version too but since I was just doing a small project, in a shed, I used the old fashioned stuff. Thanks for the thumbs up!
wow, great craftsman ship, and thanks for telling about the pvc I had no Idea how I would make one with out the curved pices, now I do, I plan on making some to sell and maybe some for my cat, I am 14 and need the $ and I like to make things, I will try to make a vid of it and will post it as soon as I can, thanks again,
@NJBC8thgradeboys Cool, let me know when you post your video. Always remember though, safety first when cutting anything. Never cut towards any part of your body. If anything goes wrong, drop it and get away. You can always replace a piece of pvc but you can't replace parts of your body. Be careful and best of luck...
I made one with my dad once the cats really like it your video inspiered us to build it!!! Those ones you built look AWSOME!!!! Thanks for posting this video!
my shop is a couple of sheds in the yard and the space just outside each. makes working in the nice month's pleasant and in the winter, only by necessity... but thanks!
Well thank you very much. I try. As a young boy, my family took me on a day trip to a farm and I remember that day well. I sat on a tall horse and took in all the majesty of nature. Might've been like 5 or so but it is engrained in my mind. I love nature and all the simple things of life. Even though I work for corporate america today, i realize all that is truly important and where we all came from and cherish it and work with it whenever I can.
This is the best homemade cat tree I've seen yet!! I love how you personalized it with the logs. When you were putting the carpet on I thought you made it look so easy but I know it must be harder getting it all to stick in place correctly! Thanks for videoing and sharing this! It truly is AWESOME! :)
Started with a rigid paint scraper, then used a modified scythe or sickle - like tool but after I was done, actually invested in a "drawknife" I bought online for about $40, which is probably the best way to do the process manually. One day I want to play around with making some rustic furntiure so it'll come in useful down the road.
Now THIS is a real man...taking all that time to build something for a cat! Love it.
