I know right xD I'm constantly singing this, sort of... Annoying everybody around me because it sounds like crap, but then I come back to this vid to get reminded that it doesn't matter, just gotta keep on singin'
@KappaEffect It's Canada, seems like they respond very differently when it comes to live music. 'Nother example of this is the Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble: Live at the El Mocambo DVD. The El Mocambo is a live concert venue in Toronto that Stevie & Double Trouble ROCKED back in '83, but whenever the camera pans around to the venue patrons during a song, they're mainly just sitting there, very rarely making a show of their enjoyment. But once a song's over, they go freaking nuts.
@FredSmithRoad Hey I'm Canadian, we're not weird or something. It just seems like those kids should be moving or something. I know the audience I was in was going nuts.
unless hes singing perfect sine waves, it is a chord. You could even consider a normal note of a singer's voice to be considered a chord if you break the timbre down into frequencies
@victorthegroover a chord can have 2 notes. it's the 3rd note that makes it a "triad", not a chord. a root and a fift is a chord, along with a root and a third. a root a third and a fifth is a triad.
@crashwr A chord in music is any set of notes that is heard as if sounding simultaneously. These need not actually be played together: arpeggios and broken chords may for many practical and theoretical purposes be understood as chords.
@TheFrankoJanko try not slapping too hard, instead try altering your hand's form so it hits your chest all at the same time - it makes the slap more definite and louder to hear.. =)
Actually he did BOTH - starting with an octave, then going with overtones (= harmonics, amplified through resonance in the mouth cavity - very demanding technique) :-)
Just to comment on what I said below....We went up to Fish Creek just for a 3 day weekend get away. Hit the sights, the bars, the restuarants, the lake etc. We see that Bobby McFerrin is playing at the nice theatre right there and we thought what the heck.....something to do--isn't he the Don't worry be happy guy?? In other words--I was clueless!!!!!
Pure Luck and the right place at the right time.............
This does bring audiences together. Feeling great about life exiting this show.
I saw Bobby in 1999 in Fish Creek, Door County Wisconsin of all places. One of the best performances I've ever seen. I'll never forget he finished the show with Amazing Grace, everyone was crying their eyes out!!!! The friend that accompanied me said the same thing, she would never forget that experience ever.............................
@flowerdove2168 I'm pretty sure that's not the "tuvan throat singing" technique you're referring to. I know what you're talking about, but this is definitely something different. Overtones sound more like whistles, almost like the ring of a bell. He was definitely using his voice box for both pitches. I'm pretty sure Buddhist monks were doing that for a while though, in some of their mantras.
That's my theory, at least. I could easily be wrong. Peace
As of this posting, we can confirm that there are (at least) 7 very stupid people in the world.....the ones that dislike this video. Bobby McFerrin is a singular talent, and I believe that I shall never see his equal in my lifetime! BRILLIANT!
omfg, I heard this guy on NPR like a year ago and have been wondering who it was. I was like, he is doing the bass and treble with his voice!? Holy shit! This is definately him. Nice!
@mozart77 He's buzzing the root of the chord with his lips (think brass players, i.e. trumpet, trombone, etc.) and vocalizing the major third above it. He's pretty much flawless at it. It's also how he gets that thick "octave" sound at 2:04 during the two phrases ahead of the major third phrase, buzzing the root and vocalizing the root one octave up. Flippin' genius.
I demand that all of you watching this show this video to a friend of yours who doesn't know music. THIS takes talent. The man is doing Harmony - WITH HIMSELF!!!!!
@daisycorgi for your information, and for your teacher as well: One style of singing very pouplar among Mongolian traditional musicians is called 'Tuva' or throat singing. With that you can get up to 3 layers if tone off one voice: the throat vibrates between two notes back and forth in a very fast matter, sounding like one dual-voice, and then the overtone laid above that. (if we eant to be exact, there is a second overtone layer, totaling in four tones off one voice.)
@CeronDerBarde but he's not using that technique though. it would sound totally different if he was. and usually the higher tones that come from throat singing tend to sound more like wistling, and less like lips pressed tightly together. but yes, i hate how teachers try and tell kids that multiple tones are impossible when they clearly are.
I suppose so. But, do you ever see Sinatra singing unaccompanied?
Come to think of it, he is like the opposite of Miley Cyrus: Capable of doing things live that most people can only do in the studio; Miley Cyrus is incapable of doing things in the studio that most people can do live.
@Ilikekittycats123 I wasn't even referring to Miley Cyrus. She is the worst piece of shit musician I've ever heard lol. I said Bobby McFerrin and Frank both have/had perfect pitch the ability to recognize pitches without reference
Unbelievable I'm just totally blown away by this guys talent , I've spent the last hour or so just watching his clips. This by far is the best live version i have seen of this so far
Unequaled vocal control and excellence :), without ever losing his sense of humour. That's class! I wonder though how callused his chest is from all the years of slapping. :)
@Iliketogodumb Actually, he prefers if his audience remains silent while he performs. It's hard to hear yourself singing with constant clapping, especially with the particular (amazing) stuff he's doing.
wow, amazing! I like how he fiddles his fingers on the mic as if that controls the changes in his voice...like you would a sax or something, almost like he's visualizing at the same time, cool...:)
This guy makes my day every time I see a video from his Montreal concert. Frankly, his involvement in the performance is so grabbing... get a copy of it on DVD (its like 15$), you will not regret it, trust me on this one! :-)
I think its similar to throat singing where you position your mouth and tongue to produce a harmonic resonance above the note you're singing. I'm not totally certain on the science of it, but its a technique that Mongolian heardsmen use as well certain tribes of arctic indigenous peoples.
