  • the complete name of this bike is tr6 trophy bonneville!

  • the trophy is a epic motorcycle!

  • every time i watch this scene im like "come on steve. you can do it this time"

  • Scéne culte du cinéma !

  • I LOVE this scene, but I'm always so frustrated that he doesn't make the last jump in time! He deserves it after all that effort!

  • @swrdgrl I know right! I know what he could have done is using momentum of the bike, he can crash it to one of the sticks that hold the barb wires and easily cross over. the problem with this strategy is that he would have to run like crazy assuming that the nazis dont care about crossing and that that is the fence represents the border between Germany and Switzerland, not just a fence set up by the nazi. I need to watch the movie to double check.

  • Cheers for sharing this ;-)

  • @5:57 What does he say?

  • @yukiyuki2906 "Come on stand up !!"

  • @20Kristina09 Thank you so much!!

  • @yukiyuki2906 You´re welcome :) hihi

  • This a great sequence set in the stunning Bavarian scenery near Schwangau.

  • Americans must think it was a Harley-Davidson bike but it was a BMW

  • i used to ride motorbikes my sister says this reminds her of me

  • Vraiment super ce film.

  • That's also Steve McQueen behind those goggles at 3:40

  • @steindaddie I had heard that he took part in the chase, so effectively, he was chasing himself! I see what you mean about 3:40, just watch the technique used, it's very familiar!!

    TD

  • My favorite scene of all-time! The rush that reminds me never to take freedom for granted...Thanks for posting :-)

  • It was said it was hard to find doubles to do some of the stunts like the one where he jumps off fence, because not a lot of stunt doubles knew how to ride as well as Steve McQueen, and on this scene they wanted a double for insurance reasons...now how cool you have to be that even professional stunt doubles can't ride bikes or do stunts as well as you. The guy was simply awesome.

  • Steve McQueen, Grandfather of Action Heroes, jumping a barbed wire fence on that bike is still the coolest damn thing I've ever seen.

  • Not TT650 special but 62' TR6 stock with little modification (6T front fender, mono seat Dunlop) according to Bud Ekins interview on my YouTube Channel

  • The bike is a Triumph TT 650 Special according to mcqueenonline-dot-com

  • I love the beginning sequence,it's where the journey begins and what good music.

  • Thanks for uploading this epic sequence.

  • Went there this yeär on my Gs1200,lövely coüntry...

  • @PatCruiser: Thank You :)

  • @Transgarp just go there an go to groundsight and look around you can see the mountains etc. even the house behind the swiss borderline, its still there :)

this location is just 2 hours away from my hometown

  • @PatCruiser hai i am santosh from india and it was great to hear from u that u stay close to that place. great man and actor i admire him a lot . i look forward to hear from u

  • i've found the exact position where he makes the jump in google earth ! just go to this coordinates: 47°34'47.04" N 10°36'04.16" E .... that must be the exact point.

was a damn hard work to find it. maybe i go for a trip there and make a video ;)

    greets from germany

  • They don't make movies like this anymore, if this was done today the actors will need stunt guys, wires, GCI, and green screens.

  • @avran89 The guy riding into the fence was a stunt double... :P

  • @ZeroDown88 Steve McQueen did all but two of his own stunts in his entire career.

  • @avran89 Yeah he was genuinely brilliant, and I was only being a little bitch. Sorry :P

  • Still brings tears to my eyes. I was 8 when the film came out and still never miss it when it's on TV today.

  • Steve = Cool

  • Motorbikes aren't my thing. Really they're not. They don't interest me in the slightest, I couldn't tell a Black Shadow from a Bantam, but this is a really great chase, an exciting chase, a legendary piece of cinema. My heart always sinks when Steve crashes into the barbed wire and I genuinely feel his pain. I wanted him to get away and it was a really good attempt to do so. This clip (excellent quality BTW) therefore makes my Great Movie Clips playlist...

  • Triumph TR6 Trophy, wasn't made in wartime, but they didn't change much.

  • anyone else noticed the man running away at 1:47?

  • This is one of the finest scenes in filmaking history. The motorcycle is incredible but I got a Triumph Bonneville and even though it is beautiful machine to look at and ride just like the TR6 which is similar to, it is an absolute animal on wet surfaces. Got me from Chicago to LA with minor problems though.

  • check out the "Making of the Great Escape".

  • If that is Fussen, then King Ludwig's famous castle is just over those hills....

  • What kind of motorcycle is he riding?

  • @ZeroGravityGuitar87 : Triumph TR6 62'

  • @Transgarp Thank you!

  • @Transgarp It's funny that the German Army rode British Bikes....

  • @lemmor6791civ They didn't. The Triumph was painted and modified to look like a BMW.

  • @Transgarp bonneville

  • @ZeroGravityGuitar87 Steve isn't actually riding the motorcycle on the jump. Its a stunt double. Steve is one of the soldiers chasing him.

  • I wish he made it, he didnt deserve to fail like this :)

  • This has to be my favourite film. And I love the jump scene.

  • McQueen-one of the true movie greats, and as you can see preferred to do his own stunt work

-whenever he is on screen he just COMMANDS your attention

  • @darkmossie633

He did all the stunt scenes EXCEPT that jump.

  • @McLarenMercedes yes i know

  • Segura essa aí.

  • mcqueen chasing mcqueen lol

  • "Switzerland".... I wish I had a plan like this...

  • The bike chase and the jump.Steve Mqueen here represents democracy, freedom for the world. In this film he never gives up never.

Steve is also a real life hero ex marine and represented his country bike trials.

Racing car driver and pilot, not just any old pilot.

So in my book this could easily have been real life.

  • I would have ditched the triumph @ 5:03 and cut my way out the second fence with just enuff time to get some dirt between me and those guns.

  • There are not many sequences in film history that are as cool as that. Except maybe the Bullitt car chase.

  • What a film!

  • beautiful countryside. was it filmed on location?

  • At Fussen is a town in Bavaria, Germany situated three miles from the Austrian border

  • @Transgarp thanks for the info, I have to get there next summer and do a little re-enactment when the police aren't looking in honour of Steve (RIP)

  • @Transgarp Yup :) Füssen thats where I live .. Its lovely <3

  • @20Kristina09 Füssen maybe lovely, but Masuria is much better ;-D

  • @BigLouieLittlePhilly Where is Masuria ?? xD

  • @20Kristina09 onkel google weiss alles

  • @BigLouieLittlePhilly Polen ?? o.O

  • @20Kristina09 Ja !

  • Ach ja! Ze great german motorcycle ze Triumph!lol.

  • from then till now, it's still my favourite movie

  • love the way he check the gasolne by swishing the tank, before he takes off for Switzerland--classic actor moment.

  • @SantoFan46 Steve was an accomplished motorcycle racer, racing out of Malcolm Smith's shop in the 60's. He also did customer bike maintenance in preparation for trying to get on the ISDE team.

most early motorcycles did NOT have fuel gauges.

  • I read Paul Brickhill's 1950 book of the same name as a kid. Lots of neat story and prictures. I remember the FW190 controls sketch, the convincing forgeries, and the german army belt buckles made out of soap bars? but not the motorcycle chase. Anybody know if it really happened, or was this added on for excitement like in Bullit with the mustang and the charger?

  • Overrated coolness.

  • Look at the wat the King of Cool slides that Triumph on that wet Swiss grass. No stuntman here till the actual jump.

  • @NazziSteve there's actually another video on YouTube that shows the stuntman who did the jump.

  • Okay, I admit it. Watching this inspired me (and a few million others my age) to start riding motorcycles - thanks Steve. And yeah, even though his friend Bud Ekins did the jump you can tell every place where McQueen himself is doing the riding - just by his posture and body language - even when he is playing a German rider doing the chasing.

  • Every time I watch this scene in the film I think 'Come on Steve.... you can do it this time'!

  • @Pobrais so true

  • 2 feets to go for the freedom.

  • We know that Steve McQueen didn't do the jumps. But the fact that he was able to do so much of the riding - and look good doing it - really makes this whole scene memorable. He was a very unique guy and died much too young.

  • bud ekins: the real reason germany lost world war 2.

  • When I was visiting the south of Germany I pictured Mcqueen with the motorbike in every freacking road.... hehe

  • parts of Interview >

Bud: It was about 12 feet from the bottom of the wheels to the ground, and about 65 feet long.

Rick: Tell us about the bike.

Bud: It was a '62 Triumph; nothing special. Nothing was done to the suspension.

    Rick: You jumped a stocker?

Bud: Yes. Girlings in the back, no sidecars springs in the forks, nothing. It was completely stock other than a lighter earlier model front wheel.

  • write this words in Google's search engine > bud ekins great escape triumph

  • wasnt it a royal enfiled??? I mean the bike....

  • The explanation is in this video : The Great Escape - Bud Ekins Interview - 1998

  • The bike should be a BMW R75, not a British bike

  • @cineaccion3 in the movie, the bike IS german.

  • @Deathtank75 según el autor de este video, es una Triunph, la moto del ejercito aleman era BMW. La moto de esta escena no es una BMW guerra ya que esta tiene dos cilindros boxer opuestos muy tipicos en esta moto y claramente diferenciables

  • The music is really brilliant in this film

  • Best motorbike chase ever.

  • This is an EXCELLENT film.
