@swrdgrl I know right! I know what he could have done is using momentum of the bike, he can crash it to one of the sticks that hold the barb wires and easily cross over. the problem with this strategy is that he would have to run like crazy assuming that the nazis dont care about crossing and that that is the fence represents the border between Germany and Switzerland, not just a fence set up by the nazi. I need to watch the movie to double check.
This song makes me want to jump a motorcycle over our fence....but I'll end up in my neighbor's yard....and he has guns and was on the losing side in WW2.
@steindaddie I had heard that he took part in the chase, so effectively, he was chasing himself! I see what you mean about 3:40, just watch the technique used, it's very familiar!!
It was said it was hard to find doubles to do some of the stunts like the one where he jumps off fence, because not a lot of stunt doubles knew how to ride as well as Steve McQueen, and on this scene they wanted a double for insurance reasons...now how cool you have to be that even professional stunt doubles can't ride bikes or do stunts as well as you. The guy was simply awesome.
Not TT650 special but 62' TR6 stock with little modification (6T front fender, mono seat Dunlop) according to Bud Ekins interview on my YouTube Channel
@Transgarp just go there an go to groundsight and look around you can see the mountains etc. even the house behind the swiss borderline, its still there :)
this location is just 2 hours away from my hometown
@PatCruiser hai i am santosh from india and it was great to hear from u that u stay close to that place. great man and actor i admire him a lot . i look forward to hear from u
i've found the exact position where he makes the jump in google earth ! just go to this coordinates: 47°34'47.04" N 10°36'04.16" E .... that must be the exact point.
was a damn hard work to find it. maybe i go for a trip there and make a video ;)
Motorbikes aren't my thing. Really they're not. They don't interest me in the slightest, I couldn't tell a Black Shadow from a Bantam, but this is a really great chase, an exciting chase, a legendary piece of cinema. My heart always sinks when Steve crashes into the barbed wire and I genuinely feel his pain. I wanted him to get away and it was a really good attempt to do so. This clip (excellent quality BTW) therefore makes my Great Movie Clips playlist...
This is one of the finest scenes in filmaking history. The motorcycle is incredible but I got a Triumph Bonneville and even though it is beautiful machine to look at and ride just like the TR6 which is similar to, it is an absolute animal on wet surfaces. Got me from Chicago to LA with minor problems though.
@lemmor6791civ this is only for movie, nazi german soldiers in never really rode on british bikes... and Triumph TR6 62' not even exsist on this time.
Great compilation clip of all the scenes of McQueen riding that Triumph in 'The Great Escape' . That's also McQueen doubling as a German motorcyclist doing that u turn @ 3:40. McQueen chasing McQueen
@movitmovit This a great sequence set in the stunning Bavarian scenery near Schwangau. There's a brief shot of King Ludvig's fantasy Neuschwanstein Castle.
@SantoFan46 Steve was an accomplished motorcycle racer, racing out of Malcolm Smith's shop in the 60's. He also did customer bike maintenance in preparation for trying to get on the ISDE team.
I read Paul Brickhill's 1950 book of the same name as a kid. Lots of neat story and prictures. I remember the FW190 controls sketch, the convincing forgeries, and the german army belt buckles made out of soap bars? but not the motorcycle chase. Anybody know if it really happened, or was this added on for excitement like in Bullit with the mustang and the charger?
Okay, I admit it. Watching this inspired me (and a few million others my age) to start riding motorcycles - thanks Steve. And yeah, even though his friend Bud Ekins did the jump you can tell every place where McQueen himself is doing the riding - just by his posture and body language - even when he is playing a German rider doing the chasing.
We know that Steve McQueen didn't do the jumps. But the fact that he was able to do so much of the riding - and look good doing it - really makes this whole scene memorable. He was a very unique guy and died much too young.

The bike chase and the jump.Steve Mqueen here represents democracy, freedom for the world. In this film he never gives up never.
Steve is also a real life hero ex marine and represented his country bike trials.
Racing car driver and pilot, not just any old pilot.
So in my book this could easily have been real life.

I would have ditched the triumph @ 5:03 and cut my way out the second fence with just enuff time to get some dirt between me and those guns.

Bud: It was about 12 feet from the bottom of the wheels to the ground, and about 65 feet long.
Rick: Tell us about the bike.
Bud: It was a '62 Triumph; nothing special. Nothing was done to the suspension.
Rick: You jumped a stocker?
Bud: Yes. Girlings in the back, no sidecars springs in the forks, nothing. It was completely stock other than a lighter earlier model front wheel.
