Steven Earl Gaines (September 14, 1949 – October 20, 1977) was an American musician. He is most well-known as a guitarist and songwriter for southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and is the younger brother of Cassie Gaines, who was also a member of the band. He was born on the same day as Ed King, whom he would replace as a guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976.... (Wiki)
Steve gaines was already a prodigy at a young age. a shark. Lead guitar, country chicken picken, blues, and the list goes on. He would have probobly made great fame like SRV . The 3 guitar force that skynyrd had was impeccable. Collins , rossington and king also very awesome players each with there own style but steve was a gem.

this song is on a japanese bootleg called teaching an oakie to fly, these is steves band detroit, you can order the cd online just type in the title its well worth it about 15 detroit songs on disc 2, and speaking of this sounding like little feat, you should have heard Crawdad play "Skin it back" by little feat, smokin version, there are lots of us from Miami that have hours and hours of live Crawdad, and Teresa has put out a couple of Cd's that can be ordered off the website

He was an amazing talent and the way him , allen , and gary complimented each other. I really think lynyrd skynyrd if they could've survived the way they should have would've been the best rock band of all time.
Steve Gaines death was definitely a tragic loss, just like Duane Allman,Jimi Hendrix,Paul Kossoff,Randy Rhoads. All will be copied, emulated, talked and written about for years to come.Gone too soon.

the reason steve gaines was such an asset was that he was the closest to fill the shoes of ed king. Steve is great and i'm not taking anything at all away from him but ed king played killer slide and great guitar and left a huge whole when he left. the band was lucky enough to find a great replacement in steve. RIP to all its lost members.
Steve, was a young 28 year old who had the greatest potential of being one of the best of his kind, so sorry that plane fell out of the sky on Oct. 20, 1977.
Such a great song..and this was his early stuff...man wat greatness would he be spewing out at 1000 buckets per second now? he would be the artist of the decade fo show
Steve Gaines truly was a outstanding song-writer and guitar-player there is no doubt about that. Steve Gaines, Allen Collins, and Gary Rossington were three of a kind on stage. The trio made every show they played so powerful and electric. Especially with the performance of0 "That Smell". Every time I listen to the guitar solos in that song I get goosebumps. In my opinion Steve was the best guitarist Lynyrd Skynyrd ever had.
Steve may have been the most talented out of the three but if you listen to any Skynyrd song Gary was the back bone. with out Gary it just wouldn't be the same. That's why Gary always was and always be my favourite.
I don't know if I would say that Gary Rossington is always the back-bone because you don't always hear him the most. For example, in "Freebird", "I Got The Same Old Blues", and "Travelin' Man" he uses the slide so he is really out in the open put probably most of the time he is just strumming chords -for example, in songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama, "Cheatin' Woman", and "I Never Dreamed".
It's true but when you listen to the live recordings Gary's guitar sounds so much fuller and louder compared to Allen's. But then again Steve's had the most unique sound that fit in with Gary and Allen's sound so well and him and Gary's slide work was just supperb.
Well let's just say this, each guitarist rather it is Gary Rossington, Alan Collins, Ed King, or Steve Gaines has their turn carry the song. Honestly, but respectfuly I don't think Rossington was (always) the back-bone of the trio. I agree that Gary's slide-guitar playing and folk-chord playing were both major contributions to the band.
Your're right Gary wasn't always the back-bone but he played a big role, as did everyone else. And thank you for this discussion. It's nice to conversate with someone with such great Skynyrd Knowledge. Haha.
Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Alan Collins were the bands main song-writers. Billy wrote one song, "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", which was featured as the last track on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1975 release, "Nuthin' Fancy". I heard in an interview with Ronnie Van Zant that Leon Wilkeson, and Billy Powell were starting to want to write more, but unfortunately weren't able to due to the tragic plane crash on the evening of Thursday, October 20, 1977. Anyway, you're welcome- you have my thanks also.
his voice... is better than Ronnie's...( not saying Ronnie isn't amazing) but Steve's voice is no doubt more in-tune and better sounding. and dont forget he plays some pretty insane guitar there
If you guys like this check out his solo album ,MCA released it in the 80s, called ONE IN THE SUN!! He made it right before he joined Skynyrd and it originally wasnt going to be released. Its on ITUNES
Yeah, I'm a huge Gaines fan - it's a shame he died so young - I really thought he could've been another Clapton. I've heard One in the Sun and I wasn't crazy about it ( except for the title track) probably because he used his best stuff for Street Survivors. Look at the credits and you'll see he wrote almost all of them except "That Smell". Long live the music of Steve Gaines...
this cut is so friggin good -- solid hook, nice tempo, good lyrics, sung well...
no tellin' how far sg coulda gone
what an absolute freakin' shame, didnt seem like he woulda done an ego trip either.
i think he wouldve eventually put out his own solo disc & w/ the xposure from ls it wouldve broke big. i think he woulda left skynrd but on good terms i hope.
yknow sometimes the way god acts sure is tuff to figgur ...giv a guy his big break and b4 it even settles in its gone
ah the plane crash stopped lynyrd skynyrd from going on and making more songs because the crash killed ronnie which is the main ingredient in lynyrd skynyrd... and steve gaines made lynyrd skynyrd THAT much better
My God! This was simply amazing; what a kick ass talented player! From what I just heard, Mr. Gaines could easily have been out on his own making big hits. "Roll Over Beethoven"!
Holy crap this song is awsome! My only problem with it is I cant find it anywhere else other than youtube..........Does anyone know where I can find this thing? i looked on limewire but I couldnt find a damn thing there.
I met steve when i was going to high school in miami oklahoma. i saw him perform with crawdad many times. Mostly at the Ranch in Galena, Kansas. He was an awesome talent and a prince of a man.. We miss you brother steve.

Freebird10201977 3 years ago
It's true but when you listen to the live recordings Gary's guitar sounds so much fuller and louder compared to Allen's. But then again Steve's had the most unique sound that fit in with Gary and Allen's sound so well and him and Gary's slide work was just supperb.
HarryBarber08 3 years ago
Well let's just say this, each guitarist rather it is Gary Rossington, Alan Collins, Ed King, or Steve Gaines has their turn carry the song. Honestly, but respectfuly I don't think Rossington was (always) the back-bone of the trio. I agree that Gary's slide-guitar playing and folk-chord playing were both major contributions to the band.
Freebird10201977 3 years ago

You know Steve touched many lives along the way.
He only lived to be 28 years old and we are still remembering him 30 years after the plane crash.
Thank You Mr. Gaines for everything...
