If you really did your research you'd find tons of old reports about Russia provoking this war by giving PASSPORTS to South Ossetians so they could declare them "Russians". They aren't real Russians. It's an excuse to invade Georgia.
Actually if you did some research you'd find out that South Ossetia declared independence in the early 1990's and that it has been de facto independent from them, that they've wanted independence for hundreds of years (google the Georgia-Ossetia conflict of 1920) and that they speak their own language.
