I'm pretty sure they wouldn't uproot our country's economy to protect us from a few terrorists. Vietnam was about using Indo-China for territorial control. Afghanistan is about oil control in the east. USA is trying to keep its foot on China's neck in a slightly diplomatic way.

However, America holds 5% of the world's population, and accounts for 41.5% of the world's military spending. Our military budget last year was nearly an order of magnitude greater than China (who is #2 in military spending). The sad fact is that China's military is twice the size and their equipment stockpile is catching ours quickly
