My birthday is today and one of my friends on Facebook was kind enough to send this to me and I absolutely LOVE it. You all are a hoot. It's one of several greetings that made my day;)!
I went to an evangelical Bible camp every summer growing up (1970s and 80s) and they sang this for everyone's birthday!!! Now it is an indispensible birthday tradition in my family, especially loved by my evangelical pastor dad! My sister Kat and I are the only lefty liberals in the bunch.
My soul brother/ best friend has is new to the SCA and has a Viking persona. I played this to wake him up his birthday morning and posted it on his FB page. He LOVED it and couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for the great birthday e-card!
Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to explain the appeal of this to my non-faire and non-SCA friends for years. Now I can simply post this for them! Woot!
First time this was ever sung at my birthday over 25 years ago was a Renn Faire at Yosemite. I was shocked and slightly appalled but very entertained by it --especially with a whole crowd of rennies singing it so cheerfully to me! And now every year I can tune in here for it. How cool!
Long damn time. I went --1973? Yeah, it was the year my older kid was conceived. At Fallshire (Falls City, WA) Renaissance Faire. Jeebus. Yes. I was in Madrone, then a barony, now its own principality, though I've gafiated. (time and time, what is TIME??) and in fact was part of the rebellion that made An Tir a kingdom. And someone owes me an A A scroll which I never got, but found a record of online.
Things were chaotic in the old years...I knew Sir Bela of Eastmarch, too, now in Valhalla.
I was in the SCA in A.S. 7 and we sang it then. It's rather a tradition in pagan circles as well. I've been trying to get my wife's family to sing it for me, but no dice. They just don't get it.
"Now you've reached the age you are, your demise can not be far--Happy Birthday..
Hear the women wail and weep--kill them all, but SPARE THE SHEEP--Happy birthday.."
Chamomile tea isn't particularly soothing when used as a sinus wash. Neither is medium-roast Colombian coffee, which is what I happened to be sipping while watching "Christmas in Black and White" and "Tvist Mouth Vikings."
Some of these videos really should have warning labels! ;-)
Got this for my birthday today. XD

OK, there you have it folks. The song has been in existence at least as far back as 1973.
Were you in the Kingdom of the West?
My kids sang it for their grandfather and he loved it. Too bad your wife's family doesn't get it.
