Fantastic post. Bought this album after hearing "BJ4". This album was released first. Guess BJ heard this session and knew who he wanted on his own project.
It's been re-released on CBS as The Best of Art Farmer, but strangely enough, the mix is not the same: the guitar on the left channel is dry, but on this one here the guitar has reverb on. This is what I remember from the LP.
I agree with csaunders84. Down Beat called this album musical junk food at the time. They lacked imagination, and the standards have certainly fallen since then. There was real playing above the funk. The recording was a little dark and muddy. CTI was in its last throes.
This album and Big Blues, from a drummer's perspective, covers everything we need to know about swing, time, phrasing, taste, dynamics... I could go on. Essential listening.
@beatcrazy14 Thanks! It's all about bowing down to those who have more authority on the matter than us! By the way, if y'all want to get even more enthusiasm for rhythm/ musicality, then I suggest you get dicenso's book, it'll warp your mind! You'll hear clave in everything, especially in Gadd's phrasing! Par example, if you know what a one bar clave is, check out 1:55 to 2:10 and listen to the drums and bass.
People were made during this song!
