Everything about this video is cool: the horn echoing. the fading on and off of the red, wig wag warning light, the screeching of the wheels, the wig wag bell, the night photography... could not ask for more. Thank you for posting this. Too bad it is history.
You would think they could use the crossing gate and the wig wag. Update the wig wag with an LED light and a new Bell, it would be an effective overhead warning device.
To be honest I wish like you they could keep things like a wig wag. But unfortunately it comes down to how much it costs to maintain or even to remove these then having the new alarm bells or even gates.
I agree. I guess if it came down to a crossing gate I would rather see that happen. They should install double crossing gates at every rr crossing. Problem is they don't have the finances to do so. This would hopefully prevent accidents like the one this summer with 5 kids dead when the driver went around the gate.
I like this video because of the silence at the beginning, then hearing the approaching train in the distance, and knowing the wigwag will soon come alive. Especially effective at night!
I remember this wig wag. Thanks for posting the video. I really never got to see this wig wag operate since I've only gone down this road a few times. It also kindda sucks that the freight trains only come down this line like once a week now. I miss seeing them.
Nope its now a short line railroad and I can't remember its name but I think its called Pacific Sun. It does switching for BNSF from Oceanside to San Diego and the Escondito Branch.
that's too bad....there is no longer any BNSF branch lines in the county. you would think that with the size of San Diego, there would be more freight activity, but there's not....
Too bad this wig-wag retired due to the new commuter trains

Is that wig-wag still on the Escondido Branch line since this video was taken from 2003 or it isn't there anymore?
BigLightFan89 3 weeks ago
Or in vista. This may not be there any longer, the nctd upgraded crossings for the new sprinter commuter trains

Excellent video!
Thank you.
Funny seeing the light leaking around the lens.
If on your right, usually a single signal would be on the other side of the track.
If on your left, it would be on your side of the track.

I like the horn in the distance. It's sounds awesome.

The striker in the bells needs adjustment. Too bad the railroads don't take pride in their equipment!

UP does why do you think they have a heritage and a steam program?
SSW8040 2 years ago
I know UP does it's the other rr's that don't seem to care. Probably want to replace it anyway. If UP owns this signal maybe they should work on it.

The light is nice and bright for a wig-wag crossing, but the bell definitely could use some work!

What happened; was the line closed, or did they just leave a crossbuck in its place, or did they replace it with gates, red lights and bells?
wiley207 3 years ago
@newdealswing Hey I was wondering if you knew the name of the Rail Road doing the freight runs. I don't think its BNSF.
AsianPerson3 8 months ago
@AsianPerson3 The Pacific Sun Rail is the Railroad that operates trains to Escondido.
