It's annoying when the news informs us on how many babies were born on Mother's Day or Father's Day or New Year's Day or Easter or Christmas. Every single fucking day of celebration they inform us "Oh someone's kid was born today, she must have got a surprise, hurr hurr hurr", and every single year it's all the same. A bit prejudiced too, why isn't MY birth date glorified too huh?
I got ahold of a news article for a sixth grade current event and i should have payed attention because it was just about an average beehive being removed, i think i either got it from Arizona Republic, or USA today.
2) One time my local news (a very prominent and well respected news source actually) reported on a jogger who fell and broke her ankle jogging. Boohoo
I saw news coverage of a building demolition. The building wasn't special or anything, it was just an ordinary demolition, one of countless per year. It wasn't even local or anything.
Why worry about a cat in a tree? Has anyone ever seen a dead cat or cat skeleton in a tree? Wait until dinner time for said feline, or just open a can of food right then and there. Cats use their claws in a method similar to repelling, dragging their claws, and sometimes stopping to look and check distance. The news crew did more to keep it up there by freaking it out with their gear and attention.
The cat stuck in a tree could have been a teaser for Fire department response time, and whether they should be spending valuable resources on a cat in a tree. At least thats the interpretation one could make from the way the newscaster emphasises certain words.
I remember back in 2003, (sorry I don't have video). During the beginning of the Iraq war. I think it was CNN, don't quote me, was covering the daily press conference with Donald Rumsfeld. In the middle of the live press conference, the network cut to a "Breaking" news story-Live, little girl about to be pulled out from a well. I think the Iraq war is more important than that.
Although I agree it is not news....is there no such thing as an honest to goodness slow news day? Maybe it is needed to counter balance all the hardcore depressing news that you usually see throughout the day...
The news is a joke anyhow. When they do cover actual news, they don't bother having facts or anything--- if I hear the statement, "one might suppose" on a news show covering something again, I'll scream. Just get back to me when you know what happened, okay? I can GUESS what's going on in the world myself
I remember my local NBC affiliate commenting on a Dog chasing a cat during the first few mins of its 30 min news broadcast. The presenter sounded so focused and serious it just added insult to injury
It's really weird how major news networks report stuff like this cat story, and other soft news. But many of you have probably heard of this operation B.I.T.E. rumor about USA invading Iran, on small time websites. Not a single major news network has mentioned the operation B.I.T.E. rumor, and it has to be a huge story.
Real news is too complicated and/or too depressing. Most people who depend on local news stations like that would need 45 minutes of background review before they even began to understand whats going on in the world, so they resort to meaningless crap like this.
"Too soft?" Why yes, every time the news talks about the hijackers that slammed planes into NYC and Washington. Yes, that is too "soft" (on journalism!) When will LiberalViewer talk about the anomalies that have yet to be answered about that day? Does LiberalViewer think we should be satisfied with what the bush croonies say happened that day?
My experience is that the US have the worst news I've ever seen. For international or political news you gotta watch one of the 24/7 news channels, the local NBC, Fox or whatever stations suck bad!
While I think your coverage of the cat clip was pretty funny, I don't think two wrongs make a right. I don't think the fact professional news covers "soft" stories excuses when you do it, and while this clip was entertaining, it didn't really say anything due to its own softness.
I don't watch the news anymore, they don't cover any actual news. Roughly one third of it is actual news, the rest is 'The hidden benefits of chocolate!', 'What you don't know about your shampoo might kill you!' and 'Who really is the top dog in this years dog show?'. Sadly I get more of my news from fake news shows than real ones as well as from the BBC and various blogs.
If that was the best news they could've covered, the world would be a better place. But since there is better news to cover, they're simply ignoring the important stuff.
In the UK BBC in York spent 5 minutes on a story about a man who built a life size dalek to get students to be quiet....if he'd given them weed they'd have been quiet but a dalek?
HA HA. maybe you should let YourTubeNews deal with the soft stuff and stick with the "hard hitting non Youtube" news. Since that is where your reputation precedes you. Hold on a sec. There is a story about a radio DJ sliding on a hockey rink with his butt.BRB.
'No' to the first question. People need 'cat in tree' stories because 1. they need to know that not all problems are global, complex, and unsolveable. 2. they need good news.
Yes the cult of "positive thinking" has done a lot of damage to our collective psyche. I would beg to differ with you, though--if Americans are getting their news from the mainstream media, they truly *don't* know what is happening in Iraq, even if it isn't "fun."
interesting; especially because the 'cat stuck in a tree' is usually used by newsmedia to refer to any story which has little or no relevance to actual news!
LV: I am convinced that all these 24 hour "news" channels are the cause for our obsession with nonnewsworthy people. When we had 3 networks, we never would have HEARD of the runaway bride (or she would have been a joke snipette at the end of one broadcast.) Natalie Holloway would have been reported missing. End of story. I actually rather MISS the half hour newscasts-no hour long segments on Bush's reactions to being allowed to sit at the grown up table. NO COMMENTARIES-no O'Reilly!
We have soft news because we have 24 hour news channels who need to do SOMETHING to keep our interest-or try to. I don't CARE (sorry) about the man who froze looking for help.I don't CARE that OJ wrote a book.At least not enough to watch an hour long special followed by a 'Point/Counterpoint' segment. We have beaten every NON news story to DEATH-and then discussed it!
it's like that one investigative journalist who did an expose on the guy who masturbated to internet porn at the library. the news business has become a disgrace to this country. the things that matter, iraq, sudan, budget deficit, our unending debt to china, the coming recession are not even treated seriously anymore.
GO BBC WORLD!!! Hehaha. Then Again, I haven't really been watching the news since most of all the important articles I can find online, and no annoying anchors in the way.
I guess this is kind of a soft comment...I don't have any example of soft coverage to add to the dialog since I stopped watching network TV a long time ago. But I thought I would say, I love the style you use for your coverage... I look forward to checking back to see more comments and video responses over time. - Most watchable!
i dislike, even more, soft news masquerading as hard news, such as "how seatbelts can kill you", or "is your child's best friend a predator? report at eleven!". i try not to take infotainment too seriously.
For the most part, the purpose of TV in the United States is not to inform, but to sell.
This is achieved by attracting and hypnotizing viewers.
I've come to believe that asking for TV to reform itself is pointless. There is only one solution, LV. Turn the damn thing off and take back your brain.
That's the basis of propaganda—a preponderance of "soft" news leads viewers to think there is no bad news. When I lived in China, the state newscast showed footage of smiling happy factory workers while the students were being massacred in Tiananmen Square. I like human interest stories too, but there are fine lines between being "upbeat," being in denial, and intentionally obfuscating the truth.
Cont: So, I just called the fire department and said "if you're not busy". They arrived within 5 minutes, got out their ladders and got the chicks and chicken down. The fire chief decided to call the local news paper, and the next thing I know I'm reading about myself and my house roof! Usually, I wouldn't consider removing the chicks such a vital thing in my life. It's just that we drink roof water and I didn't want chicken crap in ours.
Personally I do not mind one or two "Human Interest" stories. 30 minutes of gloom and doom and bozos protesting so they get their mug on TV is more than I can handle.
I do: We had this chicken who laid 21 eggs on the roof of our house. The eggs hatched and the chicks were in danger of falling off the roof. The ledge where the chicken was roosting, was rather high and precarious, I didn't want to go up there to rescue them, and our ladders were too short.
YES! There, didn't even have to watch the video :). Time saved!
