  • She reminds me a lot of Jennifer Lawerence. I love this story, it's truly horrifying.

  • i find it funny that she was in Jurassic Park and her mother was in carnosaur (very bad dinosaur movie) which was made the same year

  • I think she's a very sexy woman. She looks very hot in Smooth Talk also in Jurassic Park and together. But that is sick she could be my mother. ;D I am born 1989

  • I think what's great about this movie is that you can watch it without even recognizing its metaphors and ambiguities. It almost seems like a superficial coming of age story. but it exists on 2 different planes completely. You can see it as a girl who has 3 different encounters with boys one summer. or you can take it as a girl's inner struggle with her own burgeoning sexuality projected outwardly, with all the beautiful and sweet and dark and dangerous feelings it stirs in her.

  • And arnold friend (A Friend) is the final embodiment of this newly forming sexuality, that's why he knows so much about her and can really turn her on to him or off with very little effort and without having to say too much. Arnold's friend asks whether he should cut the phone line, this could be a metaphor as to whether Connie's new, unbridled sexuality will completely cut the lines of communication between her self and her mother. Her final date is almost like a moral crossroads for her.

  • also, when she recounts the story about Eddie to her sister, it doesn't coincide with what happens. she also lies to her parents, saying she is going to a movie when she is actually on a date. When she meets with her friend after the date, her friend asks how the movie was. Connie answers "Oh, the show. You should know." This almost points to the idea the date is to be interpreted as a made up story, just like the one Connie told her mom about going to the movie.

  • i think her dates could be seen as daydreams or fantasies that her new sexuality takes her on. all through the movie she is lost in her head or in a daze. each date scenario is either highly idealized (a really nice guy, who says she is the prettiest freshman in school, takes her in his car to a beautiful night scape view of the twinkling city underneath them) or dangerous (Eddie jokes he'll give her a fat lip before he takes her to an underground parking lot and paws at her continuously).

  • i think it's her newly forming sexuality that has tinted the world in a new shade to her. it's all very bright and alluring but also very dangerous and carnal. She does not fully understand what she is going through or the intricate details and rules that govern this new mysterious plane but she goes through the motions, using her inchoate experiences to navigate her way through it.

  • ELLIE, THE DOOR LOCKS!

  • HAVE TO WATCH IT FOR ENGLISH lX

  • I'm just watching this for FUCKING SCHOOL

  • haha 2:36

  • Wow crazy how no one has offered the feminist critique, noticing that the theme is that young girls are like meat-men are wolves - creepy innocence destroying beasts. I mean, that's what I got from it. Then again, she willingly goes, and therein lies the greatest tragedy (Laura dern did a similar scene w willem dafoe in "wild at heart"). haha she's got the "deflowered angel" market covered.

  • THEY DO MOVE IN HERDS!

  • HA! yea right she looked wayyy better back in the 80's then she does now dumb niggas

  • Man, Dern was HOT and beautiful in her teens. What happend to her?? And no give me any "age" shit because in Jurassic Park she was already looking weird.

  • I loved this movie! It was sooo creepy in parts.I was alot like her when I was a teen.Just wanted to know about everything! The guy reminds me of someone I once knew.He was kinda spooky like that too.Spoke with that smooth voice. As for the rape.I think she went on her own.She just wanted him to go away .So she gave in.Remember Luke raping Laura in General Hospital. She fell in love with him...

  • Yeah...Arnold Friend really makes me want to vomit. He's disgusting.

  • Who the fuk reads books? OMG!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Satler!!!!

  • @lurch321 this is a true story. arnold friend is charles schmid, an american serial killer. magazines also called him "The Pied Piper of Tucson". the girl in the movie returned but charles schmid raped the girl, killrd her and buried her in the desert.

  • OMG! I just read the original story by laura oats. i dont have to watch this to know what happens.

  • Dude, Isn't June supposed to be older, The movies never do it 100% the same.

  • wiat i just watched the whole movie it was reallly good BUT i dont get it did she sleep with him? SOME ONE answer i they knw

  • @TightLeather1 he rapes and kills her.

  • She based arnolds character half on bob Dylan and half in a serial killer who was around the Arizona Tuscan area. He was a middle aged man who was short, stuffed his boots and had black hair. He'd lure teenage girls from their homes and kill them in the desert.

  • Some posters on here are saying that she was raped by Arnold...................but I think the author of the original short story leaves it up to us to decide what happens to her. It's an ambiguous ending. Was she raped, or was Arnold not even a real person? I've read an interpretation that suggests Arnold was a symbol for Connie's rite of passage into young womanhood. At the end, she is maturing. There could be some other interpretations too.

  • @lurch321 In our Critical Analysis class, we also talked about how Arnold could symbolize the devil, because of the fact that he seems to be all-knowing and exhibits demonic behavior, such as being able to so easily lure and mentally terrorize his "victim". We also uncovered how if you take all of the "r"s out of Arnold Friend, you get An old Fiend.

  • @TheColorBug Yes, your interpretation could work too. Arnold is a very thought-provoking character.

  • Hm I imagined Connie looking MUCH younger, and I imagined Arnold paler, with black shaggy hair, and kind of '80s looking.

  • beautiful girl

  • the first 9 sec made me LOL. oh the dance moves.

  • Connie is pretty but its something off about her face... Idk what it is. Kinda Masculine looking....Is the movie called Smooth Talk or what?? Because the book has a different title.

  • @Armaniwazhere thge movie is called smooth talk and was adapted from the novel Where are you going ? where have you been ? by joyce carol oates

  • @fratandcourgette Try Stagevu website.

  • Try Stagevu website. You can download the whole video. It the only one I know of that has the whole movie.

  • William Ragsdale is adorable here.

  • Laura Dern looks great here. Why do people like to pretend that middle aged actresses look better than they did twenty or thirty years ago?

Plenty of 15 year old girls in real life look just as mature as Laura Dern does playing Connie.

  • @angryangora

Yeah no kidding, Laura Dern was fine back then.. not so much anymore lol

  • Connie looks way older than 15 like she is supposed to be in the book... USE A YOUNGER ACTRESS!!! (most boring movie ever. I had to red the book and watch the movie and then write a compare/contrast essay on the movie and book. TOTALLY SUCKED)

  • @kooky112 haha yea i know what you mean. I'm doing that right now for English class.

  • @sweetXricerockets It sucks, if you want I can send you my old paper just for reference if you want ha ha.

  • @kooky112 haha thanks, but I got all i need for my paper.

  • wow I think I was about 16 when i frist saw this movie. been trying to find it since than.

  • @cynsmiful Try the website Stagevu. They have the whole movie to download.

  • okay, im usually a "i'd rather wait for the movie" type, but the movie does no justice to the short story, although it's a great adapotation. the short story i feel, has more religious undertones and i think that Arnold Friend is a symbol for the Devil, jussayin'. its a real creepy story in my opinion, but one of the best ambiguous endings ever. i didnt know there was a movie adaptation for it, gonna have to go get it, asap!

  • @milhousetheking Totally agree with you, but I still didn't like the book or movie.

  • I read the short story for Contemporary American Fiction Class. Absolutely amazing, indeed. highly recommended.

  • I read the short story by Joyce Carol Oates and had to write an analysis essay on it for my English class. the story is amazing.

  • Just saw the movie. Laura Dern is hot. lol But yeah couldn't stand the second half of that film. Fucking stalker/raper.

  • @Cuteblondie1972 sunglasses at night very perv

  • @Cuteblondie1972 ....creepy and ackward at 2:32

  • @Cuteblondie1972 Try Amazon.com. They have it on DVD.

  • Just as a heads up, ths movie was made in '85 not '86

And if anyone is wondering, if you take out all the R's in "Arnold Friend" it spells "An old Fiend"

  • @taffygirlz My english teacher told our class about the r's in 'Arnold Friend'.

  • @cerebraldude812 ..ok...

  • @Cuteblondie1972 it is on Showtime this month. I already set my DVR.

  • @Cuteblondie1972 Oh no, it was never censored. The movie portrayed her rape in a very vague manner, that leaves you thinking. You can't help but wonder and contemplate what that man did to her. The fact of the matter was, he raped her. But it doesn't imply this blatantly; and even after the deed is done, you still can't help but wonder because the girl shows a very big change in her behavior and attitude. From telling the man she never wants to see him again to embracing her family with love.

  • @Cuteblondie1972 YUP. That Arnold Friend guy raped her.

  • Laura is the best!! Thanks for posting this. :)

  • Poor girl got raped.

  • Find it used on DVD somewhere. Or it's mega cheap on eBay. Just read Oate's short story for my English class and I must watch this now.

  • @iamthelazerviking I just read it too and we're going to make a video on it for my english class. It's a crazy story.

  • I think she looks better now than then. Who looked good in 1986 anyway? :0)

  • As a matter of fact I thought that Dern and her on-screen mother looked absolutely beautiful here in this video. But I do prefer Dern's personality in Jurassic Park as she is much more grown up and mature than on this.

  • @herbal1971 yeah my 70 years old granma looks better now than then. LOOOOOOOL stfu :D

  • @herbal1971 Rob Lowe!

  • Her Mother is a sad, jealous downer!!!

    GOON !

  • Are you talking to me? I've never seen the film before so I don't know what the mother is like. But the actress and her daughter on screen both look really pretty.

  • I am watching this movie at school just finished the book.

  • LOVE this movie.......For anyone who was a teen through the 80's- it is an awesome time-piece: The Malls, clothes & styles, etc. Great Stuff !!!!

  • If you love this movie, could you PLEASE tell me the name of the song and artist right at the start of this video? I love it, Laura looks really beautiful there dancing and clicking her fingers. I've never seen this film, but her mother looks cute as well, it really was a suprise to hear her say what she said to lovely Laura there just smiling innocently. Anyway, could you tell me the name of the song, thanks.

  • @Gaznugget I believe the song is "You Don't Want Me" by Frankie and The Knockouts.

    Knock yourself out, lol~

  • awesome! laura is so gorgeous!!

  • laura dern is so fine .

  • I never quite got what really happened in this movie. The implication seemed to be that Connie was raped, but we really do not know for sure. One thing we do know is that she undergoes a transformation and is clearly not the same person at the end of the movie. At any rate, the soundtrack and acting were both excellent.

  • it is about coming of age. it's based on the pied piper of tucson, a man who in his early 30's dressed as a teenager and talked as a teenager to lure teen girls, 3 of which he killed and buried in the desert

  • I got this movie at the dollar tree for $1! Love it and well worth it!

  • Laura Dern OMG.

  • there are many ideas as to who Arnold Friend was. Some critics say he was the devil. Some say it was all a dream. Some say that he was Bob Dylan (she actually dedicated this too him. Why? no idea) and some say he was charles shmid (a serial killer at the time who went after girls age 13-17, dyed his hair raven black and had it shaggy, wore pancake colored stage makeup, pale lipstick, and mascara. Usually stuffed his boots with tin cans and aluminum foil to apear taller and lured them with music)

  • Bah...I want to see more of the movie!!

  • SATAN!!!

  • Take out the "r"s in Arnold Friend and you get An old Fiend.... Satanic much?

  • laura dern is a goddess!

  • Arnold Friend symbolized the Devil

  • Laura Dern is Super hott in this movie

  • Wow, Connie's mom is a total C U Next Tuesday!

  • @EmpressJudge13 haha....nice

  • In my opinion, I don't think Arnold Friend was 'evil'. If you read between the lines of the story, he could also be portrayed as a good guy.

  • Comment removed

  • how can he be prtrayed as a good guy he kidnapped her!!

  • But, ah, that's the genius of Oates' storytelling. There are several symbols that suggest Arnold is God (or God-ish). He may not me the nicest God or god, but he has come to rescue Connie from a jealous mother and a father who doesn't care.

  • i have never thought of it that way and i see your point and its very good, but i did some research and i found out that arnold friend was actually based on a serial killer that was in life magazine, im not saying that ur opnion is wrong, becasue the more i think about it the more i think your right, but thats what joyce carol oates said

  • That's true. I do recall that, as well. But there are also a number of interpretations Joyce accepted. There was also one (and this one I have yet to understand) that said it represented the transition of music from the 60s to 70s. Oh, the joys of altering views.

  • that's right, the short story that this film is based on, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", is based on a real serial killer who was referred to as "The Pied Piper of Tucson" This guy used to seduce and murder teens in Tucson, Arizona by pretending to be a teen himself.

  • "Where Are You, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates is one of my favorite horror stories..It is in many literature anthologies. The horror comes from the artful juxtaposition of the commonplace and the naive with the ambiguous yet certain prediction of untold evil.

  • i read the story "where are you going where have you been" it's a good story but at the end i got lost

did conny dies right or arnold just rapes her

  • they never say. basically, she grabs the phone, screams into it, he threatans to kill her family if she doesn't come out and she does. it just says that she walk out her door to an empty land around her and she didn't know anything about it, just that sh was going to it....

  • I just saw this movie in my literature class yesterday and it was a good movie. We had read "Where Are You, Where Have You Been?" so my teacher showed it to the class. Laura Dern was hot in this movie too haha.

  • sorry. it was bothering me. it's "where are you GOING, where have you been. " sorry XD. we just finished it in class today XD.

  • @taffygirlz Oops. I just noticed that right now lol It's been a long while since I posted that last comment up.

  • oh! i have, thats why i looked it up.

really good everyone should read it

way creepy when you read it, no lie

  • "i turn it off"

  • Have you read "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"
