In short, we started as advisers to our ally, France, and inherited it when they gave up, and by then it had become larger than just Vietnam. I mean, only several years earlier, the USA threatened to use it's dominance of global currency markets to destroy both the British and French currencies if they went to war in Suez. Consequently, France left NATO for a period, because they were obviously pissed at this threat from an 'ally'.
It might however, have more to do with as Eisenhower said, serving the MIC.

The finance both sides so who ever wins pays back the money both sides borrowed, or if there is no winner each side taxes their people to pay back...and of course the interest is what they are after. if u american do not attend to help people when they help you; don't bother asking or conviencing them into this mess. Most of the our people escaped to US here, but there's still many back there who needs american help. At least tell the thai/laos government to stop killing our people cause the war is over 20-30 years ago. Just this year; they deported our people about 4-5 thousand back to laos. They knew for sure that they will die one way or another.

Fear of fire was natural in our ancestors as is the animal's instinct, but our ancestors outgrew this unreasoned instinct and learned why and what it was when fire was dangerous and when it was not. We are not condemned by our animal/newborn instinct, we have the ability to eventually outgrow wars even if it appears hopeless today(as imagining a world without official slavery may have been hard in spartacus's time or the idea of voting for women, etc)

The german army in Nazi-times was a strong and very well organized army,At the end they were much weaker, but even then when the U.S. attacked,they were by far much, much more powerful than the irak-army! At this point, I just think the Reps and Dems are sabotaging each others effort for political gain at the cost of lives and national prestige. Of course, I don't think we fought this one the way it should have ben fought either. Too much like Vietnam, not enough like WWII. We should've been over and done with this one by 2004 at the lastest.

@PaulUmbarger I don't know about Iran. I'm sure we'll end up bumping heads with them before it's over with if things don't change but, I don't think that'll happen for at least another five years.
