Every time Wales says he is the founder of Wikipedia, he is lying. Dr. Larry Sanger introduced Wales to the idea of using a wiki to seed the existing moribund encyclopedia project called Nupedia. Wales was reluctant but did install the software per Sangers request. Sanger named it Wikipedia. Sanger fostered most of the key guidelines and policies that still govern Wikipedia today. Sanger was listed for years worth of Wikimedia press releases and documentation as co-founder with Wales.

As I read, Sanger says that Wikipedia lacks credibility due to, among other things, a lack of respect for expertise.

However, that does not only apply to Wikipedia but to encyclopedias in general, with some university lecturers discouraging students from citing any encyclopedia in academic work.

Jimmy Wales, the de facto leader of Wikipedia, stresses that encyclopedias of any type are not usually appropriate as primary sources, and should not be relied upon as authoritative.
