@zhujun516 hahahha did you seriously just criticize Zukermans technique? your right zukerman cant play hard pieces, thats must be why he is one of, or possibly the greatest musicians of our time. your a joke
@zhujun516 Well he has always played like that and I've listened his Sibelius, Brahms , Tchaikovsky and Vieuxtemps ( Absolutely virtuoso concertos in some parts ) and they were just excellent
Very nice. The Brahms sonatas thats what he is best at. Where was this performance? Somebody knows?I have him on video in London with all the Sonatas, but i think that is not the same as this...i need to check.
he's basically got it memorized. he just needs one look at the shape and he goes on. it's also rude in chamber music not to have the music. if it's high it'd only get in his way
Main reason is that in chamber music all are equal, so to not use music is to put yourself above the other. Of course if everyone memorizes, then it is acceptable too.
I don't know if it's just the instrument, the recording, or Zukerman's viola experience and technique, but the sound is very dark. Still recognizable as a violin, but leaning towards viola tone, I think.
His violin itself also has an influence on his tone, it's a del Gesu and seems to have a very dark tone. But what you point out is true, he usually uses pretty slow bow speed which gives him a dark very grounded sound.
I saw Pinky play this when I was 13 years old in Boston, MA! I got to meet him back stage after and get his autograph!

I like Zukerman a lot for his brahms

I saw this! (Zukerman & Neikrug @ the Sante Fe Chamber Music Festival) It was great live... I adore his phrasing.
The VHS recording muffles the sound. Zukey or Pinkey is only 5'6" or something.

hes gotta fix his posture....try 2 memorize da piece at least?
jancam555 3 years ago
what part of his posture does he need fixing?
violmartt 2 years ago 2
the position between his chin and shoulder needs fixing, and this makes him couldn't play very difficult pieces, like paganini's

why do all great violinist keep thier stands so low....???? how will they read the notes???
vlhere 3 years ago
Because it's much nicer for the public to look into the violinsts face than into a stand.

But it's a fantastic performance, nonetheless.

Great performance by a great performer...

It's the recording or the fact that it seems to be uploaded from a VHS. He doesn't actually sound this muffled or "dark".
