I found your wonderful appreciation of the Rich poem last semester and have used it now twice in my Women and Literature class. I have been teaching the poem for over twenty years, and your video with the poet's voice in the background serve as a terrific tool for understanding Rich's poem. Thank you! Will you do some other poems?
@fayjoojoo793 That's great!! This poem has helped me to reshape my own narrative, so that it's mine, entirely.
Rich will be visiting my city in a couple of weeks so I'm going to try to see her after a reading she's giving and let her know about this- I sure hope she likes it. It's kind of scary thinkin' about approaching her, but I'm determined! :o)
I did. I'm very glad you like it. It meant a lot for me, personally, to be able to create something that represented my connection to this poem and for others to feel it means a lot to me.
God, I love this poem so much. I only hope that I get to the point where the external forces of history can pull me towards a truth as powerful as Rich's.
Powerful we are studying emily dickinson right now and this juxtaposes to so many central themes emily dickinson protrays ..... THANKS MS. SPERRY FOR THIS LINK !!!!!!!! very powerful
This poem is a metaphorical journey of discovery, Rich through most of her life struggled hugely with her sexuality and this poem is all about her discovery. When Rich says
"the thing i came for;
the wreck and not the story of the wreck
the thing itself and not the myth"
here Rich is searching for the truth and not the myths of men and women.
Thanks! This was a poem that has always stuck with me since I was first introduced to it in college. Decades later, it still is THE poem that I feel most connected to- felt SO good to make it!
Thanks Howard. This one is so special to me- it's the first vid I ever did that was kind of a catharsis. Rich's poem has always been incredibly meaningful to me and I was so glad to be able to create a visual representation of it for myself.
Thank you so much! I've done so many vids (only a few that were highly personal like this one) and this will always be my favorite. I love it that others get something out of it, too.
This rendition moved me deeply and helped me to process a near-death series of violent, traumatic experiences that happened to me. Thank you for helping me to climb down the ladder and dive into the wreck. This video is one of the treasures I found down there.
Holy cow. Thanks so much for letting me know. This video is near and dear to my heart and my own life's journey. I'm so glad you were able to connect with it on that level. My best to you, and again- THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for your reply, as well. I am a man and Rich's poetry speaks to my heart and soul. She does have a universal appeal, in addition to her particular relevance for women. Also, her feminist messages speak to me as a feminist, as they do to feminists and civil rights activists of all genders.
again, wow. again, this is such an amazing piece of work. thank you so much for sharing this. you put so much into it and it affected me. thank you syd!

Great, but the music is too loud...overpowers the voice.

I think you're right on about that. Thanks :o)

Yes, I agree. Great video and the music does bring out the atmosphere partly, but it needs to be backgrounded a bit.
