My husband is in his 19th year in prison in New York wrongfully convicted. 1 out of every 100 Americans is serving a prison sentance. Either we breed the most evil people on the planet or something else is going on !

I take it you will call America the best place to live and ignore corruption that has made it and will make it a bad place to live. The only way I can see to stop it from going inflationary is tariff all imports (which they city of londoners will not allow) and bring back manufacturing and production. Think about this 2 islands 1 island produces tangible items witha trained and skilled workforce the other island produces very little. Both islands have paper money , which island's money is going to have the most value and stability?

Actually even before African slavery Europe was on top, it always has been, that's how they could afford to take over the slave trade. The original slave traders were in the middle east, then in the 1400s it was handed over to Europe.

You can't say that is why they were and are powerful, Europe is powerful through natural resources, democracy, and the rule of law.

I think the national avg to keep a prisoner is around $25k, and about $45k in California. But I don't think prisons should be privatized. Obviously they shouldn't be taking jobs from citizens, but instead put in jobs no american would do for a low wage like picking lettuce, weeding organic farms, separating recyclable electronics etc and be payed only with a better standard of living.

17 cents an hour plus room and board. While I see problems with the way this is being done, I think inmates should work. It's the closest thing to rehab they could hope to get in the American prison system. Maybe if we are worried about losing jobs to them, they could go back to smashing rocks. I think it would make more sense if society benefited from their labor. They owe a debt to society. That's what it is to be a criminal. Work beats anal rape.

Also, the people who profit from this today need to go to jail as well. This is pure enslavement insanity and there's a good chance it's going on where you live in the USA.

The prison system is corrupt. I could go on for days about that. Most of the people in prison don't belong there but for the small fraction of people who belong there(violent offenders,and white collar thieves), they need to be doing something.The prison system arguement would not fit in this tiny box.

Technically they are unemployed too so I'm not sure why they would be paying money to other unemployed people.Our government now has the power to round people up into camps and put them to work. I am aware of the problems and feel the only solution is for a worldwide revolt. The owners of America and most of the world are untouchable and we will probably be stuck with whatever they give us.

Prison labor in the U.S. is too soft. We need to make these people do some real hard labor, like making them work on plantations, quarries, mines, and farms. If they die, too bad. Put them to work in the mines for 12 hrs per day, hahahaha. Just get another slave to replace the dead one.

We are paying them more than 17 cents an hour, we're paying for the roof over their head, 3 meals a day, and training for them to get a job when they get out. It's not slavery it"s prison they have a choice not to be there by not breaking the law.

@ganixaba I know someone who did some jail time and they worked at a privately owned factory to where private people benefited from the use of the slave labor. We dnt expose this criminal behavior it will be you in the assembly lines making parasites money for 17 cents / hour. These jobs belong to private citizens at a living wage end of story .

@hijackednation This is similar to the "immigrants take jobs" argument. The prisons pay for the food and general maintenance of the prison population. The companies that profit from the labor gain serious profits which they likely spend. This spending creates jobs, so the market accommodates changes in population. The only way this system would make workers lose jobs is if the profits are kept in the bank or if, one way or another, money doesn't flow back into the markets. MV=PQ

@hijackednation It is important to note that Japan sentences most of its prisoners to labor, often to manufacture cheap electronic parts. Japan is the 3rd largest economy in the world and has one of the lowest crime rates. I believe that if the system is done right, it can help US manufacturers.
