I predict: even 100 years from now, Led Zeppelin will still be popular, and will be covered by musical acts on record and live. This music is so strong today, even symphonies want to cover it. This song is already 38 years old, but even 14 year olds adore it! Just like Debussy's music is 100 years old, and his music is as popular as the day it was created. How lucky humanity is that Robert, Jimmy, John Paul, and John gave us this gift of music.
I agree with you. I was here 38 years ago when this first came out, I am surprised that much of Led Zeppelin is still popular today. However, having seen this much, I wouldn't be surprised when it is still popular in 100 years or more. I am proud that much of the music from my day has unending popularity. It's not called Classic Rock for nothing. Because the only other music that has stood the test of time is the classical. Now that Zeppelin is being played as symphonies, I know it won't die.
Great song! This whole album was scored and arranged by Jaz Coleman and produced by Jaz and Youth, both from Killing Joke. The instrument that people are asking about below is the uilleann pipes.
I really like the whole Symphonic Led Zeppelin thing. Led Zeppelin's music is filled with complicated melodies and riffs so much that it is impossible for someone to not want to orcheastrate their unique and cultured sounds. Of course, no one could possibly put into music the sounds that Led Zeppelin has created.
The prince of peace is clearly Aragorn riding into the gloom of the Paths of the dead, leaving Eowyn behind. The battle of Helm's has already been fought at that point. So the battle refers indeed to the battle of minas tirith. But the song is not altogether coherent.
Plants voice would have imbued with something different and very specific _ well, if I dare say with something Plantesque. His voice can glide with ease back and forth in time, from middle ages to post industrial, but it is too original not to dominate!
I was reminded at first of a Shahnai, the Indian double-reed Oboe with naked finger-holes. But then I thought of bagpipes. Later with that chirping in the background, may be a Sampler? Perhaps a variety of wind instruments? Well it does evoke an atmosphere of its own, more set back in time.
Thanks for mentioning it. Missed that kind of association fixed as I was on Tolkien and more Celtic highland scenarios. Intrigued just read a great Google book review of The Bagpipes by Francis M. Collinson. Check it out! The Aulos: pp25.
that is a very good analysis. I also think that it needs more dynamics and a timpani part. There isn't much of a percussion part, which could give a steady background sound and add more of a beat. It still is an excellent song, though.
but the beat is there, a percussion would dampen the sounds of the "softer-sounding" instruments and the drum obstinato would b too repetitive and tiring for the ears. In my opinion.
In the beginning you can hear a Bombarde in the background (its NO bagpipe, more like an oboe). The the lead instrument is an Uilleann Pipe, played by the piper Liam o'Flynn of the famous Irish band Planxty. And yes, its the same instrument as from the Titanic and Braveheart soundtrack ;-)
thanks Apyz! this song is just great. both this version and the original are absolutely amazing. i love the bagpipes(?) in this one! is it bagpipes?? lol.... i can just picture robert plant singing it
This version of Led Zepp's, Battle of Evermore is brilliant. I love the original song as it is, but this really dresses it up nicely. Too bad Robert Plant wasn't singing along. Now THAT would be awesome.
The Celtic flavor is so appropriate, btw!

Well, the song is based on The Battle of Helm's Deep...definitely makes me think of Rohan from Lord of the Rings.

umm no it was based on the battle at minas tirith

no coherent maybe cus it isn't what u've just said
Migels123 1 year ago
would you care to explain?
hiqqie 1 year ago
It is not coherent with respect to the reference to LoTR I mean, that doesn't mean that the song itself is not coherent.
But maybe you have another to say that?

Bormbarde (Breton bagpipes), I think. Possibly Northumbrian pipes.

That IS an oboe playing the lead, is it not?
I'm usually rather good at deciphering the timbre of an intstrument... but I guess I've never heard an oboe sound like this.
This is probably the biggest reason why this piece is one of my favorites on this album.
JTOabc 3 years ago
Yeah, I was wondering if it was an oboe or not too. Whatever instrument it is, it's beautiful in this song!
marxthesmurf 3 years ago
it sounds like the instrument they use in the Titanic instrumental theme song.
