  • 7:45 is wrong a 1/8 a would make the parabola much wider rise 1 across 8 durr

  • why does he say watch the door in a lot of his videos?

  • So what about the focus? And the Directrix? Or is that too advanced?

  • I like how he's wrong. You can create 5 things from slicing any way. He forgot a point. Cut it right in the middle.

  • The first 1:43 they are talking about Oprah XD

  • My sister watches these videos almost everyday! Awesome. Yay math nerds!

  • also, i noticed you said "vertexes"

this really bothers me because you're a math teacher and im only a freshman

    it's "vertices"

    learn your vocab, sir

  • are you grading the kids based on how much they laugh at you...?

'cause you're not that funny... ._.

  • I did not see this video listed on the main website... this makes me sad.

  • @ssnapier Thanks for letting me know, it will be fixed. You can find the full video at vimeo.com by searching yaymath conic section parabola. YayMath!

  • LOL nerds

  • seems like a cool teacher

  • These are incredibly cheesey, but thanks for doing this guys! You're saving my quiz for tomorrow lol

  • im in 7th grade and my teacher wants me to explain how the shape of the parabola relates to the equation.

    can anyone help?

  • @sharklovertothemax If it has a "x squared" or "y squared" then its a parabola.

  • hahahah LOL with the dudes that said they dissected a HORSE on biology LMFAO

  • @javogreen07 after a few seconds he says "my dog" xD

  • @javogreen07 lol I noticed that too

  • I am doing this section now in my class and have NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING.

    Now....I DO!

your sooo funny I so wish you were my teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i wish you were my teacher

  • you shouldn't have changed it from straight lines to curved

  • typically math is boring.. but you make it funny and i LOL... i wish you are my teacher =)

  • Hey Sacha Borat Bruno enough about comedy, I have no time to listen to those snobs...

  • Math teachers should learn from you :) You are one of the best math teachers out there. You don't make a big deal out of it but make it very understandable :) Thank God for you :)

  • Thank you so much! Im having problems with my teacher, and you have really helped. You are now like America's math teacher.

  • This is funny. It makes Math look fun..

  • Just a suggestion, but perhaps you should take time to derive things to the class. For example, instead of having them just memorize 1/4a, you should derive to them WHY it's 1/4a.

  • @yaymath you deserve a reward or something. your a great teacher to your high school class and to many others. thanks!!!

  • yeah, i hate hearing stupid ditzes at school make completely ignorant comments that make you want to blow their head off and dispose of their poor excuse for a brain.

  • Yo these kids are fucking annoying .. STFU

  • tell these kids to shut the fuck up

  • Kids are distracting. Teach the damn class with out the cheering section.

  • how much did u pay em to laugh

  • @3bo0odpala agreed

  • math is really a interesting subject. but sadly, it is rare to find great teachers/profs.

  • Where's the directrix?

  • @dude58 the directrix is the negative of the focus. If the focus is x=3, the directrix is x=-3

  • @utubsdum though the focus is a point, and the directrix is a line

  • God they sound like 5 year olds watching those tv shows that try to get you to participate.

"dissect it like a frog, in biology"

    kids - "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"what do you dissect in biology?"

kids - "a squid!" "nothing!" etc.

still a vaguely helpful video, though.

  • 1:44 "watch the door"? watch for what? cops?

Great video though, it was really helpful

  • The cones are supposed to be straight not curved as you changed. The triangle wouldn't be possible because the cones are infinite, they have no bottom or top. A cut parallel to the Y axis when X approaches 0 is just an infinitely "thin" hyperbola.

If you had those cones curved, there would exist a plane cut that would cause a section that resembles 2 ellipsis ...

  • you are like my french teacher. a party everyday.lol. if only he liked math(he hates math);.; thanks for teaching me what my teacher couldn't.o.o

  • Great video! I would like to see some y^2 problems as well.

  • this was a waste of my time...

  • i took algerbra 2 last year and my teacher sucked and i went to your website and looked at all ur videos for algebra 2 and stuyed and i got a 92 on exam

  • they're kids actually this happy in class about math???????? :O

  • Stop talking abour Oprah I need to learn the Conic Sections Parabola we have a quiz tomorrow!!!!!!!

  • Henriser123...yeah this is kind of rude! its his channel, not yours and he can talk about oprah all he wants, he is helping you...have u realized this???! theres actually somthing they invented back in 1999 called rewind! :]

  • hehehe to tell you the truth these are only basics his teaching I thought he was going to teach how to get directrix the focus and the latus recta hehehe obviously I wasted my time here but anyway thanx...

  • @henriser123 If you go onto his website and check out the video section, there will be full-length versions of his lessons.

  • @henriser123 He's helping you. There's a reason why this is called "yaymath." I think what he's doing is right; he's putting math in an atmosphere in which students can learn without stressing out. I would love to be in his class because he seems like someone who's very easy to approach, fun, innovative, and clever. Many students would say they fear math, but this guy's putting some positivity in there. He genuinely loves what he's doing.

  • So everyone, know that the cones have NO curvature in their profiles -- if you cut either cone and split it in two from the point at the tip, you WOULD create two triangular surfaces!

  • There is a serious error in the explanation about the triangle question! There is no curvature as drawn on the outside of the cones with black lines!!!! None!!! The reason you cannot make a triangle with cones is because when discussing conical sections the "cones" are endless (their are no "end caps" -- they are added only to help us visualize the cones as 3-D).

  • on the full video..

    why isn't the vertex -1 ??

  • i just want to ask...

at what ages u all start to learn conic section?

  • im 16,

  • sophmore or junior year..15,16,17

  • my teacher does NOT TEACH !! thank you so much!!!!!!!!

  • Seriously my math teach expected us to just read the book and never offered any incite what so ever.

For all of your math teachers that read this, please teach not everyone can learn from a book as efficiently as you. Some of us are very VISUAL people!!!!

  • We don't even have a book. We just have questions with answers. Sometimes we get solutions which rarely are helpful, no explanations. This though, the way he has actually made it atleast somewhat entertaining has rekindled my interest in math a bit. Grade 11 (Manitoba), I breezed through pre calc with a 97, and grade 12 I'm doing not nearly as well and have not been enjoying it.

  • stupid kids...

  • If all teachers were like you, we would all be great students!

  • When my teacher explains she skips half of the parta, & all i can say is that THANK GOD FOR PPL like YOU POSTING THese VIDEO & Thank GOD 4 YOUTUBE! Or else I would be F**ed!

  • these kids bother me... o.O

  • Comment removed

  • thanks u so much, my teacher sucks so this really helped

  • @eastwildcatlover story of my life!

  • i wish u are my teacher!

  • If there is such a thing as a fag in denial, this guy is it

  • wow i actually learned something..

    :)

    i still hate algebra!!!

but this is so much simple than my when i'm in class

plus i'm not passing notes so i focus better :D

    wow!! :D

  • umm your cones were right the first time i dont know why you changed them

  • how did u get the 1/8

  • wow a teacher and a stand up commedian!! XD

  • I like your video creation method. Its great to see the teaching session in progress without actually being there.

  • This guy is better than my teacher, her teachings are too confusing.

  • This is a high school class actually. Hope you like it!

  • man I wish my teacher was this cool.

  • @yaymath What school is this at??? i wanna go there just to learn math with you guys! haha

  • what unversity is this?

  • this is philip jimenez, i'm watching this video, mr. edwan a smart teacher, who made me watch this video 4 trigonometry homework , go edwan!!!!!

  • I attend an Intermediate Algebra class at a community college. My instructor lacks your enthusiasm. But, I like your videos, you have a gift for making math fun and not so hard. Maybe you could do a motivational video created for math professors and learn em' how to be "yay mathed" :)
