  • Alright I'll see I can change this and correct it, thank you.

  • Does anyone know what the full consist (what type of cars it has diner/bag dorm/slumbercoach and in order) was for the Lake Shore Limited for that time between Albany, NY and Chicago, IL?

  • Why is it that our Eastern long distance trains are so short now?

  • I was looking at the archived Amtrak timetables and i was laughing at the Lakeshore Limited's innagural schedule. departed Grand Central Terminal (and yes that is accurate) at 615pm and arrived in chicago 240pm. horrible timing. 20h35m is about normal for the train to run but the arrival time is so late how can anyone connect with long distance trains in Chicago if most of them are gone by 2pm (except the city of new orleans which leaves at 8pm.)

  • At Albany both trains are combined. This was shot at Silver Creek, NY. I don't know which symbol it carries west of Albany, NY, either 48 or 448. But this is both trains together.

  • @supertouring west of Albany it is Amtrak 48. east of Albany it is Amtrak 448

  • Very nice video and superb sound. One possible correction: This looks like #48, which is the train that terminates in NYC: #448 is the Boston section which usually had 1 sleeper, 2 coaches, 1 snack bar coach, 1 baggage car, and, at one time, some mail cars.

  • also great horn on the f40

  • this was on fury of the f40ph

  • kinda sounds like a P horn

  • Wow! Nice horn. It sounds almost like a K5LA when it goes by and the pitch lowers.

  • That was the biggest piece shit Amtrak ran back in the mid 90's. I worked on it....

  • early to mid 90's

  • whats the year here fella?

  • awesome horn 5*

  • Hmm...I never knew that some of the F40s had P5s on them. Nice sound.

  • I've just came back from Vancover B.C. on VIA's Canadian Rockies Overnight Train & all they've had was Heritige Cars & they were beautiful (i was in coach) comfortable, And accually afforable around this time (but in advance), But once i got onthe U.S. side I saw the newer amfleet cars. They're comfortable..,But not heritige comfortable. Great Video. My Friend. I Love Train Trips LOL!

  • That amfleet looks out of place.

  • Um...you're right.

  • WOW, awesome P5 horn action! Great shot!!

  • Wow! How I miss those Heritage Fleet cars on the Silver Meteor and Silver Star. Bigger, more spacious, and much better riding qualities than the ultra light-weight Amfleet cars (Amcans!).

  • To ACLTony: If your ever in Maine ride the Maine Eastern. They've got cars similar to that and run at high speeds for a tourist railroad. 40-50 mph.

  • Thank you GP40mc. I hope to visit the northeast again. I'll google Maine Eastern for a website. - Peace :-)

  • @gp40mc Hi, sorry it took so long for me to reply, but thank you! I'll google the Maine Eastern and check it out.

  • And a COMBINE (bag coach) on the REAR... WOW NICE CATCH!

  • Upon further review, it looks like a Bag Dorm possibly. Still great

  • same type of horn on metra

  • Yeah! Good ole F40 back in the 90s! Nice P5 horn too! 5***** and fav.

  • What year was this recorded? Reminds me of The Crescent back in the early 1980's! 5*****

  • Nice!!!

  • I worked on this train for 1.5 years. This train number is 48 not 448. The train number was 448 only when the leg was ALB to Boston. The NYP section continued as 48.

And the same for 449, when it hooked up with the NYP end it became 49. They couldn't bring the dome cars to BOS because of the clearance at the Muddy River bridge, 2 inches to high. I really miss working on it.

  • Heritage coaches were not on the Lake Shore between April 1991 and February 1994.

  • you are watching it on video, sorry guy

  • You said you believe this was taken in summer 1994. That makes sense. Heritage coaches came back in February 1994, so what I'm saying doesn't conflict with the video.

  • Actually I rode the Lake Shore Limited from Buffalo to Albany with my dad on Saturday 9/11/93 and it had all heritage coaches. We rode in coach 4711, the first coach in the NYC section immediately behind dining car 8510.

  • Heritage coaches only made appearances on the Lake Shore when a really late train meant the cleaning crews didn't have time to clean the Amfleet coaches.

  • I liv e like 5 miles away!! Love the F40's though!

  • Nice Video, I miss the F40 Locomotives too, but the horn didn't sound right on the lead locomotive though, sounded like there was water stuck in the horns too.

  • It sounded like that horn came from another engine, like an NS eng. It has that old Southern RR sound to it.

  • wait is that a P5 horn or is that a K5la with a high pitch to it. i looked closely to the F40's roof in the video and it didnt look like a k5la but it might have been a p5

  • It was probably a p5. Amtrak's first 30 F40s delivered, #'s 200-229, were delivered with p5s. F40's #230-415 were delivered with K5LAs. So the lead F40 is probably between #200-229.

  • Well, 90229(ex-229) still has its P5

  • AWESOME VIDEO!!! Classic Lake Shore Limited at its finest! Do you remember when you shot this video?? I'm guessing sometime in the early 90's. That location off Rte. 5 in Silver Creek is one of the best spots in WNY to watch trains.

  • I believe it was summer 1994

  • Makes sense. Right around the time they stopped using the dome car between the lounge and diner.

  • Amtrak used the dome on the Lake Shore between early May 1994 and late September 1994. However, one of the domes was lost in an accident and, therefore, one equipment set didn't have a dome.

  • This can't be later than early July, 1994 because in early July, the Slumbercoach was switched to the New York section.

  • Good video.

  • I wish I was around longer to have seen more, but I am thankful that I have been able to see a few years ago on the San Diegan service. (Right before Surfliner transition!)

  • Hell ya F40PH

  • I sure miss them

  • AHH the glorious F40, those were the days!

  • Great to see some footage of the F40's in service. Awesome clip.

  • Yes it was and I miss it

  • Now that was Amtrak!!!
