Thanks for you'r video Tom, good job (helpful as always).
The thing is, I'm a bit short of fonds, so I can't afford the stuff you mentioned, so I've been using online learning (like "LiveMocha(dot)com") and audio tapes. But I have a feeling that it will help me about as much as a phrasebook.
I would be thankful if you could share in your opinion on those things.
(btw I'm not studying for the purpose of enrolling JET or so)
I think if you can't afford to buy anything expensive then making to do with ANYTHING is fine. Anything is better than nothing and the fact that you're trying to find other avenues to pursue your interest in Japanese is great! :) Best of luck!
yet the other most important thing is to want to understand it..watching anime is kinda like connecting fun with learning...you enjoy the show and learn from hearing...than get some boring audios that you only pray to make them stop ^^ well I learned english more (as its not my native language) from watching movies,tv shows and most important RPG games where there is LOTS of text..I used to sit with dictionary as I played in order to get what is going on in some sentences ^^
well I have to kinda disagree on the matter of not be able to learn japanese by watching anime..I kinda get 50 maybe 60% of the stuff they talk about in anime...but the key to to that is to watch it with subs..you hear the words and see what they mean after a time you get more and more from it and subs wont be all that nessesery...in past I kinda watched first "raw" form with no subs and try to understand and then I watched the same episode "with subs" to see if I was right ^^
Nice video, Tom! I think another good tip is to just not be afraid to make mistakes when talking in Japanese. I have been learning for over 7 years and what held me back for so long was always worrying about structure, whether or not I knew the absolutely correct words etc. and by the time I formed a sentence in my head the conversation I would be having with some Japanese friends had moved on =/ *awkward* haha. Getting the point across in bad Japanese is much better than not saying it at all :)
And I'm currently using an online textbook called TextFugu, which I highly recommend to anyone who is self-studying Japanese. There is audio and they basically hold your hand while you study Japanese which is actually pretty useful. The first season is free so make sure to give it a try!
I agree. After watching a shit ton of subbed anime I definitely understand how the language sounds and some basic basic shit but still do not understand shit.
I completely agree with you on the part of making friends. Actually, I believe there are quite a lot Japanese natives in my town, but I'd never dare to look for them and try to befriend them. Sadly, this also means there is absolutely no one I can talk to in Japanese.. (even though I love to do it)
Huh well...I sometimes talk to myself LOL. It's so I can practice 'quick-thinking'. I hate having to go "ummmmmm" for about 10minutes before I can figure out the right way to say a sentence/reply. Good thing is in Sydney there's quite a number of people you can talk to in Japanese, I usually skype with relatives for best practice.
Btw lol, love how you pause at your most flattering expressions.
I'm just about to start college. I've never studied Japanese before and I'm not taking any Japanese courses in college. Is it still possible for me to learn the language? Are there outside classes I could go to in my spare time? Will I have to wait until university, and if so, will I even be accepted having no prior education in Japanese?
Please reply. I have watched all of your videos and I didn't find an answer. Thanks.
Rosetta Stone if you have the money. Although it's probably a little more along the line of anime like you said as you aren't really having a conversation. I find it works great though however, nothing compares to an actual Japanese person.

Can you make a video of you speaking strictly in Japanese with subtitles? I'd like to hear how you sound :) and maybe you could write some too?

@juanlserna can you fit a large portion of a language into 500megabytes? Rosetta sucks.

Why do videos related to Japan always attract a wall of weirdos in the comment sections...

Why did you name yourself Akita Tom?

@DoubleAAnime when he first came to japan on student exchange he lived in akita!
sopeopp 1 month ago
@DoubleAAnime Because he first lived in Akita as an exchange student, and his name is Tom.
Same that my name is KyotoIsaki, I live in Kyoto (on my first visit) and my name is Isak.
It's normal for vloggers or users to use these kinds of names.
Maybe you should watch his very first videos :)

TOMUUUU. You look so comfy in there.
Ah, I learned a lot by teaching English to my little host brothers when I was there. That also refreshed my sign language, haha.
