@Duffblue Note that I specifically referenced the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in which Vettel lost his right rear tire, not the season finale at Interlagos. At Abu Dhabi, Vettel brought the car around the track back to the pits, ostensibly to save the car and continue the race, but as with Villeneuve's car, the suspension was blown.
Nobody will do it now on the premises of saftey, it's not the smartest thing to do, to drag a car around, especially not in F1, it's not endurance racing damage can be very minimal but may not be fixable in time for the end of the race.
@proudselect27 er what? Thats exactly what he was, he was only 5'2" in height and born in Richelieu in Quebec - which is French Canadian at least that is what we would call it in the UK. Murray Walker adored Gilles.
He's my hero too, and I was born 9 years after he died. If I ever get past amateur club racing myself, I'm going to make my helmet red and black as a tribute to him.
I wonder whether the guy had a brain cell at all. This had to be one of the most stupid acts I have ever seen, by probably the most dangerous driver I ever saw race. If he did this sort of thing now he, quite rightly would probably be banned for putting other drivers in danger.
Thank God he killed himself before killing or injuring someone else by his ineptitude.
If anyone is interested about buying f1 dvds from me, then reply by clicking on my name. Then 'send message'. I sell basically every grand prix race from 1978 to 2008. Also, lots of unseen 1960's/70s world feed races that were never seen in the UK and many other countries. For example, I have the 1975 Nurburgring (German) grand prix and many others that were never seen on British tv, before 1978. 1978 is on 17 dvds, so you can understand what range of footage I have.
I think Villeneuve's motto was "drive it any which way you can, even if it's falling to bits around you", that must've handled like a shopping trolley back to the pits.
hey simonator1337 , check the vid:Jacques with Gilles car here in youtube.....no way shumi or any others driver will do the same thing than gilles whit the same car.....and gilles was fair , too proud to block others...a senna , shumi trademark....so dont compare gold whit silver....
What?? I think almost everyone of the drivers today would do the same thing no problem... I've seen Schumi, Häkkinen, Räikkönen etc doing almost the same thing.
Only really Kimi Raikkonen would attempt this today!! The funniest thing was that Gilles still expected his mechanics to tend to a clearly knackered car.
Gilles didn't realise he had only three tires though, he thought he was in the condition Kimi was in Malaysia last year (where he drove with a flat-spotted tire until his suspension had a spectacular fail)
That's the one! I got confused cause the first corners of half the tracks look the same now cause of Tilke. (Hungary, Sepang, Nurburgring, China, lesser extent Bahrain)
Perhaps Sebastian Vettel watched this video before Sunday's GP at Abu Dhabi...

@dinancarsm3 A slightly wonky gearbox is nothing like losing half of your car.

Absolutly amazing. Incredible. I don't have words to describe this.
Villeneuve was many things, and among them, it was his madness and irrealism, that we can see in this lap.

Couldn't do that in a modern GP car, it'd fall about half way to the pits, especially with Gilles at the wheel.
But what balls! Love that guy!!! X-D
BlueFox284 3 years ago 4
That was pretty dangerous to the other drivers, he was lucky his car survived in one piece all the way to the pits.

not only did he drive it back to the pits, he was driving as fast as the car would go with one wheel dragging. this is the stuff legends are made of.

They were lucky that the car didn't go out of the track but mainly they didn't have a car of the '70s
