  • i like how you pronounce the 'g' in 'gnome'..

  • You are my hero! Thanks a lot

  • Ugh, I just started with Linux and got Ubuntu 11.04 (dual booted). I decided to get a KDE desktop from Synaptic but my computer powered down in the middle of it for god knows what reason. Now I get a weird login and when I go into Ubuntu all I can see is my desktop, I don't get any bar on the top or side to launch apps, show time, etc.

I've worked out ctrl+alt+t gives me the terminal (from which I launched Firefox), but at this point I can do very little in there compared to the proper GUI.

  • I cant even right click :( nothing comes up. Please help

  • @missaprillane I have the same issue. How did you go. Did you find a fix?

It just comes up with the back ground and nothing else on the screen, can't even right click to access terminal :(

  • My problem is that I can't get the Virtualbox menu in Unity. lol So I have no way of selecting full screen or seemless mode etc.

  • @baillou2 What do you mean by the VirtualBox menu? Isn't it part of the software, not part of Ubuntu?

  • @MarrkDaviid You know how with previous versions of gnome, not to mention all of Mac and Windows desktops, when you open an application there is the little tabs/menu at the top of the window, e,g, File Edit View Options Help? Well now those options are on the top panel of the desktop with Unity - all fine and well by me - except this is not the case with the Virtualbox Guest OS window.

  • @baillou2 So you cannot see the menus when hovering over the top bar, in your VirtualBix installation of Ubuntu 11.04? Is it the final release? I haven't had that problem myself.

  • @MarrkDaviid That is correct. But it's only with Virtualbox, and not the virtual box window that initially opens up (the one with the list of guest OS's). I'm talking about once you launch a particular guest window; that one!!

  • @baillou2 It sounds like a problem with VirtualBox, have you got the latest version? What platform are you running it on? Have you tried changing the screen resolution within Ubuntu? Sometimes this automatically resizes the VirtualBox window.

  • @MarrkDaviid I'm running it on Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit. I can change the size of the window by dragging the edge like always. But I can't get into seamless mode or enable any other options since there is no menu bar options.

Keep in mind this is a virtualbox installation of WinXP IN Ubuntu 11.04, NOT the other way around. I don't ever install Windows directly on my harddrive. In any case the guest OS isn't the problem. I could just create a blank machine and it SHOULD work fine. But it won't.

  • @baillou2 Sorry, I thought you meant Windows with a Ubuntu VM. It sounds like Unity is the real problem, I imagine that you will be able to see the menus if you switch to Gnome 2. The only solution I can think of is disabling the global menu, which you probably wouldn't want to do.

  • @MarrkDaviid Yeah, it worked fine in gnome 2. I'm hoping that in time there will some tweaks that will fix this problem, along with several others.

I hear there will be a good deal more customization eventually. I don't hate Unity, but it's not quite there yet.

  • @baillou2 Yeah, they should have had more than three BETA's.

  • fuck unity

  • I did what you told and still I do not have any bars. I am running applications via terminal, do you think compiz is creating the problems? At first everything was ok, after I tried to enable desktop cube, the bars disappeared forever.

  • @mcamoran Is it a BETA release or the final release? Did you install Ubuntu on a physical machine or in a virtual environment of some sort?

  • @MarrkDaviid the final.....ok i solved it.
