In 1971 there were many great albums. This album is so beautiful. Led Zeppelin IV was an epic album but this album was MONUMENTAL. Zep was doing their thing but Marvin Gaye put out an incredible album quietly. He is to be awarded for that. I love this song and this album.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
marvin gaye was before my time im a 92 baby but one day i got bored and start listening to my dads cds nd thats when i fell in love with marvin gaye nd old skool period im the only one at skool with mercy me ring tone they think im an old lady..lol
his voice is timeless. it's so controlled, calm, yet gripping and as powerful as a louder singer, it pulls you in like a current. imo the most seductive voice i have ever heard, and i don't mean that in a gay way for all those close minded people on here.lol. gifted talent, marvin gaye was. just brilliant...
I remember riding in the car as a teenager with my grandmother, aunt, and cousin when they announced on the radio that Marvin had been shot by his father. My aunt was trippin and now I see why!!! Marvin was special; real special.
Love this song...but dislike the very weak last few notes...Marvin was The Man and so glad that the young uns are listening to his wonderfilled lyrics. No wonder he was so sad and on to drugs, life must've have been even worse for African Americans back then...there must have seemed little way out...Wake Up Everybody! We can do it together. Create a world of Peace.
Weak notes. WOW. Everything Marvin did in this MASTERPIECE was for a reason. How sad and disappointed he was that he got beaten out by Lou Rawls for the Grammy this year...he truly should have won for the album of timeless sheer genius. Life is hard for so many folks--period. Marvin was speaking of human-kind. And peace will come one day, but certainly not through man's hands. Keep listening and loving, folks. And if you don't have the What's Going On CD, GET it. It's awesome!!!!!!!!!!
the amazing thing about this incredible talented charismatic man is he wrote this song over 20 years ago and things have only got worse. marvin gaye is one of the greatest american artists ever upp there with satchmo robeson dizzy steve jimmy etc etc and all the african american people who we white people owe so much to economically culturally and inspirationally.
the album "whats going on" was released in 1971/72. marvin warned us all of the dangers, drugs, war, crazy politics and the environment. this album is just as relevant today. we dont seem to have learnt much in 35 years.
i think everyone on earth should listen to this album, especially our "leaders". a great message aswell as beautiful music and an incredible voice.
I saw Smokey Robinson on a religious station & he said that this is the most spiritual album he has ever heard. He may have been a rock or soul singer, but this album has been an inspiration to many. Relevant? Amen. We doom ourselves by the choices we make. I Samuel 8:18 says:
"And ye shall cry out in that day because of
your king, which YE shall have chosen you;
and the Lord shall not hear you in that day."
Make good choices. We will reap what we sow. Choose peace.
It is not a stretch to call Marvin a genius - he had a vision and made this album despite criticism - he knew it was a masterpiece. I admit that the word is used too much but Marvin Gaye was one of the best singer / song-writers ever.
God gave us a handsome soul brother that wasn't commericial, fake, or phony. Just a tremendous gifted musician, his artistic statements and visionary mind made him a genuis.
If you want to use proper English you could say, "It even uses less letters". But you actually stated that twice since you implied it in the first sentence. However, I'm sure you know that. Sorry, I know it sounds condescending. Oh well.
Anybody here know this song came out in 1971 and, also, at the end of the song, there was a sax solo by the late, great Wild Bill Moore! This song dealt a lot with life's problems and how the world & ecology was back in '71!
for all 2pac fans who ain't knowing that 2pac followed marvin gaye's steps when it came down to politics, racism, and police brutality now you know!!! but i've always wanted to be like marvin instead of pac because this man here was the smartest around to know more about all the hatred and poverty in this fucked up world.
The people really dont understand or acknowledge how talented and awesome Marvin Gaye was and he is truly missed because this type of talent doesn't just stop by everyday. This comes once in a lifetime. His talent is so real as his spirit will live forever in all of us who are touched by his music in our hearts and soul. Thanks Marvin for sharing this talent that God gave you that's still here even though you're gone it will forever live in all of us.
I cried the day he got shot by his father. One of the worst days in my life. I remember exactly where I was at only a few months moved out of Motown.
