i don't know much about classical music but i really love this - it's got tons of passion etc etc etc and it's the best version of this piece of music i've ever heard..... also i think jan svankmajer is great...long live alice!!!
This is second short-movie by him. His first one called The Last Trick is not here on youtube and probably even not on net. But to all his fan i strongly recommend his latest full lenght movie The Lunacy. My favorite movie =)
One of the earliest - if not THE earliest - films by this genius of cinema. It does not, however, suggest the heights of intelligence and cinematic innovation that Svankmajer would reach, uncorrupted, un-dumbeddown by America or the Czech nomenklatura. This man is consistently brilliant, unlike Tarkovsky or Bergman, and his surrealism leaves Bunuel in the kindergarten.
When was Tarkovsky not brilliant? All of his films are great I think. I am not crazy about all of the Bergman I have seen and Buñuel has done some real good stuff (though I've only seen four of his films, the most surreal scenes are very well done).
wow cool film. I think that the symbolism that Jan wanted to put in there is how do you really know that you are free? or it could mean what purgitory is like, being trapped and waiting to be let out. or it could be through the eyes of a holocust victem, the doors opening could mean the incinorator. what do you all think?
In my opinion he was tryin to put that music in picture. You can hear - music is pretty depressive and those pictures as well. He just tried to transform sound of that instrument into movie (pictures).
i think it is either what rajis85 said, or it is a story of the thought of being locked up, and then soon the doors will open letting him out. yet it is false hope when the cellar walls reapear. then when it showed the shot of those two windows it could basically be hope that one day he will be free.

Probably because of the grainy quality.
The grainy quality adds to the atmosphere though. :-)

Bit slow to start and not on a par with the Bach sequence in Fantasia.

Not easy watching, but very good music, atmosphere and use of light. Very little animation though.
