My favorite chazunus piece....we all sang it in shul today after the kiddush in shul....led by an 87 yr old man !!! (Ahavas Chesed Shul in Chicago, IL)
By the way, Pinchuk's recording of this is almost indistinguishable from Hershman's. It's obvious that one was virtually a template for the other. I'd love to know who came first, because it would almost have to be seen as a tribute to the other. Any help, chazen connoisseurs?
Hershman had it all. A magnificent performance. But you must also hear Cantor Pierre Pinchik. Try Pinchik's Forgotten Masterpiece on this site. There is a heartbreaking pathos - or bathos - that places him alone among the greats.
i'm sorry . . . whoever added "improvements" to these astonishing classic recordings should be shot -- it's like adding color to classic B&W movies or, more aptly, adding rhyme to the psalms to make them "more musical" . . . aside from being intrusive they're stylistically all wrong and musically primitive these great cantors deserve to have the recordings that document their art preserved in their original form and not defaced by those who can't distinguish between art and kitsch
Herschman was the greatest of the greatest to me, anyway. To my ear, he had everything- beauty of tone, phrasing, feel, tremendous artistry, and range.
@HAZIDEAD Thank you for the information. This is similar to what has been done to recordings by Yosselle Rosenblatt. It makes listening so much more enjoyable.
Whoever butchered the original with this monstrosity should be shot.

@skorecki7 Everyone to their taste- there is nothing "too emphatic" here! He sings with a great deal of fire, taste, and beauty!

@Cantormatis Hershman was my paternal grandfather's favorite cantor, in fact, favorite tenor, not excepting Caruso.

a perfect match between the amazing voice, the harmony and the content of the piece!

Beautiful voice and the recording is crystal clear, unlike most older recordings with scratching noises.

@vintagepa, actually this is new technology by Dr. Morderchai Sobol which combines the original voice of the chazan with a modern choir and music.

Beth El Temple an important position in Brooklyn. He would have been great in operatic lyric roles, listen to that top!
