@yakyakyak69 No, actually it's a plug-in series hybrid. The Prius is a series-parallel hybrid (that can be made as a plug-in or not). Honda's hybrids are parallel hybrids. GM prefers to call the Volt a range-extended electric vehicle, but any vehicle that uses two fuels (like the Volt) is, by definition, a hybrid.
@sboschert No, it would be a series-hybrid if it did not have a battery and could not operate as an EV without the range-extender. The fact that it IS and ev when the ICE is not operating and does not NEED the range-extender for NORMAL operation makes it an EV with a range-extender. Yes, a new category is born.
@yakyakyak69 The Electric Drive Transportation Association and other experts like Prof/ Andrew Frank at UC Davis are my sources. Read my book, "Plug-in Hybrids," and then see if you disagree. ;-)
@yakyakyak69 It operates as an electric car but it's still a series-hybrid by definition since it has a gas engine. GM doesn't want to call or associate the car with 'hybrid' because most people who think of hybrid associate that with the Prius design where it is a gasoline car that uses batteries to capture regen and allow for periods of engine-off time. Take the generator out and you lose the hybrid term, but it's a hybrid with two available sources. You are digging into semantics.
It's NOT a hybrid! It's an EV with a range-extender! As an advocate, you should know the difference! Shame on you!
Prius - hybrid
Leaf - EV
Volt - EV with range-extender.
