This is absolutely off-the-charts phenomenal. That's my Judy. That's OUR Judy. Absolutely the greatest performer that lived....and she didn't even know it!!!!
An astonishing performance. What is so amazing is that Judy was utterly distraught at this time and yet still is in there pitching, giving the absolute best she could give. The show she had pinned so much hope on had been cancelled, she hadn't made a dime despite all the promises that had been made and her future must have looked very uncertain. God bless her, no matter what difficulties she faced she worked incredibly hard and never short-changed her audience.
Garland is riveting going to the depths of "By Myself" giving a tremendous soulful performance that is clearly second to none...soaring rich vocal is stunning to experience and remember being spellbound as a teen watching this incredible lady giving the performance of a lifetime therefore making a lifetime fan in love forever...Bravo Judy, love you and RIP

Why do people keep commenting on the trashiness of today's performers and yet the music industry hasn't changed it's strategy? It's because though we age, we live in a culture that says no, aging is bad, or at least not as good as getting old. So then what? I guess we peak during college years?
to bad CBS cancled her show maybe her life would of turned out diffrent if they would of left her show on tv. CBS was stupid not to renew it. The show was really good but it was on against Bonanza.
PJCOAN: This song was not written for Judy. Fred Astaire sings it in The Bandwagon in 1953. Judy did sing it in I Could Go On Singing, but it did not originate there. Oh, and by the way, Judy did lip synch now and then on her show, especially if it was a complicated number with dancing. It is well documented in several books by people who were there. She is definitely NOT doing it here however.
Do you know- this became her favorite song, from 1963 when they wrote it for her last movie "I Could Go On Singing" and presented it to her, till her death in 1969. It truly tells the whole Judy Garland story- of crass, sad realizations, and fierce determination. and empowerment. She left us way too soon- the gave up the fight, the battle of life, way too soon. At 47. Maybe I'm just being selfish, but I wish she could have held on a little longer. But then again, perhaps it was her time.
Wow, I haven't heard this song since I was about 5, I freaking love the words, and of course she always had such a cool voice. I like that her voice was a little lower as compared to other popular singers of her time, she had so much power in her singing.
The only numbers that she lip-synced on the show were the big opening numbers where it would have been imposible to get a good quality sound with all the moving about (and it wouldn't work with a handheld mic). Very little was pre-recorded and it was only for technical reasons they did it. She NEVER lip-synced in concerts... NEVER.
She was not lip-syncing. Come on people. In this day of counterfiet talent where lip-syncing is the norm; I guess it is hard to believe that at one time, we rewarded talented people with stardom, and that they actually sang.
What is the lip syncing crap. Why is there always someone on youtube to say that. Most of the time the timecode just gets throws off because youtube is poor quality. She didn't lip sync. Well, I've watched this three times. I don't think this was lip-synced. It was a song she invariably sang live. Also, by this point she doesn't lip-sync very well. It's very obvious on some numbers during the run of the show. If you think so, fine...
@roxaneirene This is definitely sung live, no lip synch. The shows were recorded often several weeks ahead of air date. She recorded in front of a live audience. IF there was a minor flub in the lyric and she kept going with the song, the mistake could be fixed after taping by deleting the sound..such as at 3:11-3;13. IF the flub was more noticeable, she would stop song and start over. Show on a tight budget, so preferable to fix the small mistakes vs time/cost of do-over
No way was this lip sync'd. The video and audio aren't quite perfectly matched but there was no way for her to lip sync when she went all out on a performance. And at the end you can hear the difference in the sound when her arm passes in front of her face as she's singing. Yes she was great. No this was not lip sync'd. She would not have had any of that.
im relatively young, been a fan of Judy since the day I was born. There has been nobody like her then and now and id definately pick her over any young singer today who think they are Judy...but just fail massively
I've never seen someone sing and OWN IT like Judy Garland. This is her penultimate performance. So confident, beautiful and unmatchable. Who sings like this today? No one.
Legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones called getting goosebumps from a singer as "God's divine lighting rod." Wow, what lightning bolts Judy could hurl. I get goosebumps every time I hear her -- not to mention tears.
And multiple viewings don't diminish the goosebumps! I remember being a kid and viewing this when it first aired. When the song was done I looked over at my father who commented, unkindly, "where the hell'd she get that song?" I asked, "did we just see the same thing? - get your ears and eyes checked!" (I was a fresh kid.....)
@nandesneto I find myself enjoying Garland much better than I do Streisand, who I haven't really enjoyed since her work in the late 60's and 70's. Garland has an emotional sadness and universal human quality that Streisand never did. You connect with Garlands emotions where as Streisand tends to be cold and remote.
@nandesneto one is a control freak, the other had no control over anything. one has always been treated like royalty in hollywood whether deserved or not, the other was used up and tossed aside. one has ossified into a plastic mediocre middle age, the other burned brightly before expiring at 47. judy gave so much more of herself than barbra ever could.
@nandesneto I'll agree that Judy had bigger lung power than Barbra, and a comparable belter for sure .... but BETTER than Streisand? No way. Streisand is technically better than Judy. Only Barbra could belt a note and within the same breath reduce it to whisper. Even today, Barbra's crystal clear tonal quality was far superior to Judy's, even in her heyday.
It doesn't matter who was technically better or who was a better belter. Both Judy Garland & Barbara Streisand are both a hell of a pair of singers and they are both the best female singers in the world. They both had great voices and what makes them unique are the qualities that they had in their voices and we can compare Judy's voice to Barbra's but at the end of the day you can't say that one is better than the other. They were both SUPERB at what they did in their careers
@gabsylv I agree; comparing THE two most talented and accomplished female vocalists of the 20th century is a tired and stupid argument. I was merely responding to the ridiculous comment (above) that some idiot made.
This could possible be my absolute fave Judy footage. The intensity of her delivery is unlike any other performer we've all been able to be fortunate witnesses to behold. Someone earlier said "consider it SUNG". I could not agree more. I wish the young ones these days had some sense of what natural talent and absolute artistry are about. It is right here to be seen, heard and felt. It is so sad that today's 'pop' artists have no sense of how to communicate with their audiences. BeholdJudy
Rory, the sad thing was that she did not even live to be 50. She died at 47 years old. What a tragic life for a beautiful soul. We were lucky to have her while we did. I love you Judy. RIP.
Judy Garland's voice was always fabulous, despite what some people said about it late in her career. Remarkable as the instrument was, Judy was so much more than the voice -- the most captivating performer I have ever seen. Unequaled, in my opinion.
amazingly her voice got better with age- which seems impossible when she sang immaculately in The Wizard Of Oz... so moving. Thank you very much for this!
Agreed on all counts, I could never understand people who were all OOO STREISAND STREISAND. She seems so emotionless on stage. Judy throws her entire being into it. That's what makes her a timeless star!
AMEN!! Judy blows up her heart and soul onto an IMAX screen when she sings...it overwhelms the listener. Babs? Great vocal instrument, great ego, but not a captivating performer in my book.
That must be quite the sparkly outfit she is wearing! The light doesn't know where to hit it!!
Anyways.... I flipping love this song!! I seriously wish we had talent like this nowadays! I mean i know we still have Liza and Barbra and Celine (etc) but its just not the same! Thankfully we are able to remember the wonderful talent she had throughout her many movies, cds, concerts and shows!! This woman was the real deal!!
This was Judys favorite song. All of them are my favorites. She gave plenty saying "I want to give blood" She succeeded like no one else.Listening to a Garland song was like getting a transfusion.
I'll go my way by myself This is the end of romance I'll go my way by myself Love is only a dance I'll try to apply myself And teach my heart how to sing I'll go my way by myself like a bird on the wing I'll face the unkown I'll build a world of my own No one knows better than I myself I'm by myself alone
To: Betty89w it was MGM who made her addicted to those damn pills. Judy didn't just start taking them. She was forced by the Studio system of the 1930's. MGM should make a public apology to Judy children Liza, Lorna, and Joe and to her fans for making her take those pills. Judy would have lived a much longer life without those pills. I know the people who made those decisions about Judy's early film career are since been dead and gone but still.
Yeah, they had her on Benzedrine, which was a form of speed. They were given to soldiers to stay up all night during the war. However she had been on some other form of pep pill from the time that she started Vaudeville, that was all thanks to Mommy Gumm, Ethel. But that was the time and it was common for children to take pills, work long hours, and smoke. Mickey Rooney was smoking cigars doing Mickey McGuire movies as a kid. Its just how it was.
youtube is, quite rightly, a democratic forum for expressing opinions; even criticism. However, it really gets my goat when some people make comments about artists, who have passed away and are unable to have a right to reply. Some comments are based on heresay and gossip, and are often fabricated for effect. My simple message to the doom merchants is look at Garland's body of work, her artisry and talent outweighs her fallabilities. She was a human being..
judy's life was not "tragic". Yes, she had problems in her life (a lot of people do) but her life was out there in the public domain for everybody else (including us!) to comment on. In fact judy had an amazing take on life and the difficult times she went through: She was ,in my opinion, a one-off. I have great respect for the artist and the woman - there is no one to match her genius.
I think you're so right. If her life was tragic, everyone's is. We dont make all the choices, but hopefully can press on in our own way. You can't conquer an audience without balls of steel and empathy, and it is very clear she was a strong woman who, in at least one way, had it on her terms. Thanks to her for that!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There's no denying that Judy was mentally disturbed thanks to her daily dose of 'chemical courage.' She had been in and out of hospitals; tried to kill herself, too. Really "Over the Rainbow."
Either your comments are designed to provoke or you are terribly naive (or both)..Judy Garland was anything but mentally disturbed. She was someone with a lot of depth, insight, strength and passion..and sensitivity: For some this means 'mental illness'. This is merely a medical/clinical diagnosis, which doesn't amount to much. Her tremendous catalogue of work is testament to her genius. Please, Betty89w, look at your own (comparatively banal) life before condemning other people's.
The beauty of YouTube is that it is an open and exchange of ideas and opinions. We agree to disagree. Somebody has got to say these things. I'm glad it's me. Lighten Up!
who? who no like thees? I keel you!

Although Streisand does have a technically more flawless voice, Judy had more raw power and a magnetism on stage that Streisand could never match.
They are definitely the best two singers who ever lived, but I feel that Judy was the superior performer. Personal opinion, I suppose :)

Cineramicfilms 1 year ago 3
@nandesneto Barbra agrees ;-) She called Judy the best singer wo ever lived
Choefoe 1 year ago 2
@nandesneto one is a control freak, the other had no control over anything. one has always been treated like royalty in hollywood whether deserved or not, the other was used up and tossed aside. one has ossified into a plastic mediocre middle age, the other burned brightly before expiring at 47. judy gave so much more of herself than barbra ever could.

@nandesneto most definitely a well rounded performer.

@nandesneto yes, yes, yes. one year later and you're still right.

@nandesneto I'll agree that Judy had bigger lung power than Barbra, and a comparable belter for sure .... but BETTER than Streisand? No way. Streisand is technically better than Judy. Only Barbra could belt a note and within the same breath reduce it to whisper. Even today, Barbra's crystal clear tonal quality was far superior to Judy's, even in her heyday.
mikesterSTLMO 7 months ago
@mikesterSTLMO
MusicLoverBrian1 7 months ago
@mikesterSTLMO when judy was young, her voice was equally exquisite to barbra's when *she* was young. that's just my opinion.
No1KCfan6 6 months ago
@mikesterSTLMO you might as well compare sapphires and emeralds..
gabsylv 4 months ago

RIP.

Damn.......that brought me to tears. The most beautiful singing I've ever heard.........EVER.

Her voice actually gained something with age. I think the fifties and sixties were her more interesting years.
Larger than life Judy!

I totally agree!

Judy Garland's voice was always fabulous, despite what some people said about it late in her career. Remarkable as the instrument was, Judy was so much more than the voice -- the most captivating performer I have ever seen. Unequaled, in my opinion.
bvheath 2 years ago 4
amazingly her voice got better with age- which seems impossible when she sang immaculately in The Wizard Of Oz... so moving. Thank you very much for this!

Definitive. Consider the song SUNG.

This wondeful song from THE BAND WAGON can only be the interpretation by the best voice ever and that was Judy Garland.
It was a treat to see her perform and the younger generation is missing that experience.

Ain't that the damn truth. The best singer there ever was. Jim Aubrey is roasting in the pit of hell for treating Judy that way.
jstellamedialv 2 years ago 8
Lonestar1 - they treated her with total disrespect. Bastards all of them! But look at the kind of TV they offer today - all shit!
Beautiful Judy, such a loving soul, so sweet. Even better than Streisand who is so full of herself.
opelske 2 years ago 3
Agreed on all counts, I could never understand people who were all OOO STREISAND STREISAND. She seems so emotionless on stage. Judy throws her entire being into it. That's what makes her a timeless star!

Barbra Streisands number 1 fan is....Barbra, of course.

AMEN!! Judy blows up her heart and soul onto an IMAX screen when she sings...it overwhelms the listener. Babs? Great vocal instrument, great ego, but not a captivating performer in my book.
NewYorkHunter 2 years ago
That must be quite the sparkly outfit she is wearing! The light doesn't know where to hit it!!
Anyways.... I flipping love this song!! I seriously wish we had talent like this nowadays! I mean i know we still have Liza and Barbra and Celine (etc) but its just not the same! Thankfully we are able to remember the wonderful talent she had throughout her many movies, cds, concerts and shows!! This woman was the real deal!!

I know the people who made those decisions about Judy's early film career are since been dead and gone but still.
punisher21200 3 years ago

She was a human being..
hirchik 3 years ago 4
Thank you for posting this. Judy has to be the most talented human being to ever walk the face of this earth. She is AMAZING!!

It's a real shame the DVD's of her series The Judy Garland Show is out of print.

Great song from the one and only Ms.Garland. Her life was so tragic. Rest in Peace.
punisher21200 3 years ago
judy's life was not "tragic". Yes, she had problems in her life (a lot of people do) but her life was out there in the public domain for everybody else (including us!) to comment on. In fact judy had an amazing take on life and the difficult times she went through: She was ,in my opinion, a one-off. I have great respect for the artist and the woman - there is no one to match her genius.
hirchik 3 years ago 4
I think you're so right. If her life was tragic, everyone's is. We dont make all the choices, but hopefully can press on in our own way. You can't conquer an audience without balls of steel and empathy, and it is very clear she was a strong woman who, in at least one way, had it on her terms. Thanks to her for that!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
There's no denying that Judy was mentally disturbed thanks to her daily dose of 'chemical courage.' She had been in and out of hospitals; tried to kill herself, too. Really "Over the Rainbow."
Betty89w 3 years ago

Lighten Up!
