@onebigkahuna69 The aircraft was a Marcel Jurca design, MJ-77R. A reinforced version, to handle the 550hp Ranger vs 300hp in the original design. It was an excellent aircraft to fly, similar to a Bonanza. Thanks for your thoughts.
Not really sure, but all the evidence points to a blown cylinder on takeoff. Loss of oil pressure probably threw the prop into reverse pitch as he was making final approach. At about 300 ft over the runway, the aircraft stalled, and nosed in.
That Jurca 3/4 scale mustang has a bad record. Looking at the Jurca website, it seems more than half of the ones built, crashed, killing the owner/builder. I knew of a guy up in Michigan that was killed in a 3/4 scale Jurca Mustang. I fly a Jurca Sirocco, and know the designs well. What kind of engine did Jim put in this one? The usual auto v-8's that are commonly used fail a lot, and are responsible for many of this designs accident record.
Very true about Jurca aircraft, there have been losses. Many builders deviate from the drawings,or just make mistakes in dealing with higher performance aircraft. The engine was a 520hp V12 Ranger, and Marcel had redrawn the plans to allow for increased stress, loading, Vne, and so forth. This is the Mustang in Michigan you heard about.Just curious, have you been here before, as a Sirrocco owner from New England come to visit. Thanks for responding:))
Yup, thas me in the above video, under the plane, and also in your video of Lowell's visit. Would it be possible to get a copy? or maybe on dvd? By the way, Ken passed away about 2yrs ago.
Yes, I can make a vhs copy. I sent you a message with my direct email to your youtube inbox. I had heard about Ken a month after he passed from a friend in Virginia. He owns a Jurca MJ-8
80% focke wulf 190, Dave S. Ken had been calling me and then the calls stopped, so I was worried something was wrong, then found out from Dave.
Thanx for the comment. The NTSB blamed it on "Improper preflight", but the truth is a longer story. As it was only Jim who was a fatality, a small airport, and no collateral damage, they wrapped it up pretty quickly, a pencil whip job. Fairly certain that the "Improper PreFlight" was not the cause. In any event, thanx again.
what replica was he flying at the time.?and sorry for the loss of your friend.

I figured out it was the same plane after my post. I
own the plane that came to visit, also have a copy
of a video taken that day. Shows Jim in his shop
and taking a ride in my plane. Lowell, my plane's
builder flew it in that day. Video taken by Ken H.
I'm wondering if you were one of the others in the video?
