just look into the author...her own family exposed her lies...everyone who knew her knew she lied...shes getting money publicity etc etc. she should be sued by hatzola for libel...its disgraceful!
By the way, I think the way you people are talking about her is disgusting. It's not the way any Jew should talk about another, and you're WORSE than her for doing that. That is NOT how to deal with and bring back those who leave, and you ALL know it. Shame shame shame on YOU, yours is a far worse chillul hashem than what she did. She can always come back, but all of you will always be goyim on the inside, only goyim treat their fellow goyim like that. Not Jews. What a disgusting example of Jews.
you are not right she went and openly posted lies against a whole community, if this would be any other community she would have to Apologize and return all her books from the stores, only because we are jews we are acting nice and only spreading the truth, and mocking her only fr the lies, and nobody told her anything wrong accept that she went into the wrong path, and she lied
I think that's really sad. But I dont know her, and cant judge her. She doesnt understand yet what she's done to herself. I think she will understand when she gets a good look at the non-Jewish world a little more. She will leave it and go home. It's not so great out here, Deborah, it's really not. She will learn this, I hope she will be ok as she learns.
@SarahRachel59 I know right? Women aren't meant to have much freedom. But dont worry, I'm sure the opportunities of the outside world will scare her back into her arranged and loveless marriage soon enough. It's where all good women belong.
@granolanutpunch Im not talking about that. The outside world is a very corrupt, cold place, not at all like where she came from. She does not have to take part in an arranged marriage, even if she was still there.
@SarahRachel59 In ancient China there was a sea turtle that was captured and became the emperors prized pet. He received the best food, attention, and habitat that money and infinite power could buy, yet he was never again allowed to roam the oceans of the world.
He lived there nearly 500 years before he perished. At least 300 years longer than he would have in the wild.
Don't you think he would have preferred to die splashing in the surf and the mud of the "outside world"?
@SarahRachel59 I agree with you, and if anything will keep her is the fear of the treatment she will get, upon willing to return. In a way, she bought it upon herself by burning every bridge to Judaism there is, but I believe, and I know there are many Jews that will willingly accept her, no matter the circumstances, as they say, you are always a Jew!
you socks!! i'm 28 i live in Detroit now. i group in Brooklyn n.y close to the religious groups and i never seen people who are so nice like i Saw there . so please stop the nonsense.
@getzil06 You should just throw acid on her face. It's how the Taliban keep their women in check when they want to make their own choices and it's worked great for them.
Deborah never saw Camp Ramah or even Stern College. By breaking away from Satmar and entering the world of bacon and crab cakes wthout examing the Jewish community outside her ghetto she threw the baby out with the bathwater by assuming all Judaism had to offer her was a shaved head and two head coverings with wide black clothes.
YOU HAVE SO MANY FACTS WRONG... I wish you had a chance to think to ask. Our Jewish teachers encourage us to do just that. It makes me so sad to see what you're doing with your life.... BE PROUD OF WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!! Its not your fault that you grew up in a broken home, but it is your fault for ruining what you had and looking for the bad in everything. By the way- my mother is a tenth grade global teacher for satmar. Many girls go on to pursue professional careers. YOU NEED HELP!
Why do religious zealots get so bent out of shape when someone (especially one of their own) is critical of their very narrow worldview? Is it because independent thinking threatens their very existence??
There is nothing but vile, psychotic criticism from inside the cult, here.
While she articulates well, her dishonesty is quite obvious. AFter reading the book, I was left feeling sad for a young girl ( too young to write a memoir) who has not lived in the secular world long enough to call herself Un- anything, other than unstable. She presents a very one - sided view of larger picture . And many details in the book as well her media tour can be proven as blatant lies. Her fame, like most, is temporary, and I hope that one day she will find a balance .
The spelling and grammar on display in the comment here, certainly confirms Ms. Feldman's assertion that the chassidim leave school with a 4th grade education.
This woman comes across as rational and balanced. I hear nothing outrageous in her claims. She simply describes her experience.
What is modern or forward-thinking about treating women as "dirty", second class citizens or everyone dressing-up in identical 19th century costumes every single day?
Socrates said it best: "The unexamined life is not worth living".
Reading all these diverse comments, I see most people are upset, angry, dismayed, shocked that Deborah has so publicly denounced her Orthodoxy, religion, Satmar, her family, etc. She's just venting her personal psychological issues in the public eye & thinks this will vindicate her & make her a better person. Everyone is using her & until this reality doesn't hit her, she'll go on thinking & believing in what she's doing!! GOOD LUCK WHEN YOU DO WAKE UP!!!
Winston Churchill once asked Nancy Astor (one of Hitler's great UK supporters) - "Would you spend the night with me for a million pounds?" To which Nancy replied "Winston, for a million pounds, even with you" A short while later Winston asked her if she would spend the night with him for a shilling (a dime) to which Nancy said "What do you think I am?" Winston then said to her " MADAM, WHAT YOU ARE HAS ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED, WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW IS DISCUSSING THE PRICE".
I, being a Belzer Chossid do not particularly like Satmar but having listened to Ms. Feldman have adopted the same attitude to Satmar that Churchill did to Josef Stalin during the war (between the wars Churchill was probably the world's leading anti communist). Quote - "Anyone who Hitler hates so much cannot be wholly devoid of merit". Thank you Ms. Feldman for showing me Satmar's good side
I grew up in the community , I am not satmar , read her book , and found it to be a total lie. How sad it is that these straight out lies are being read by millions across the nation.
@jim60206 Do you always criticize the physical appearance of people with whose philosophy you don't agree? I'm so fascinated by that behavior, especially in adults. How does it work out for you in real life?
@spershall its not her view, she is a liar and lied to the world about facts. she said people kill each other and cover up, she said that the jews treat their wives etc...
On Amazon I found this interesting review from someone who read Unorthodox. This fellow found numerous falsifications. Not all of them are significant but "they will help you understand the author and her book." (To read the full list click here.)
"I know women are not allowed to sing" p.12 l.268. Women are not allowed to sing in the presences of men, except between immediate family. Sounds different than "women are not allowed to sing" Uh??
The entire Jewish world is incensed, on a scale unheard of in the past. Deborah's fabrications hit a nerve within world Jewry and made even a lot of non-Hasidic Jews very angry and for very obvious reasons. She sold her soul for a little fame and money, like those Kapos who sold their souls to the Nazi devil.
What follows are the best quotes from an article written by a modern-Orthodox Jew:
Deborah Feldman is a media whore who lied about something so gruesome as a litle kid being murdered an
Please don't compare the Kapos to Deborah. Those poor men were in a desperate situation, starved, frozen and terrified having lost their all, parents, wives and children etc. You don't know what you would have done in their position. Al toddin etc.
Deborah had it all. She has sold her soul for 20 pieces of silver. Don't call her a whore. That's unfair to whores. No whore would behave the way she does.
@jim60206 So basically we are in agreement. Also the zoinoh (assuming she is not being pimped) is selling a service in the free market and the client is buying it. A normal commercial transaction where nobody suffers and nobody is damaged but by its very nature it must be and is confidential. Compare this to Deborah.
she keeps saying how she got over challenges ...How is religion a challenge? just leave the religion that's it.. no need to lie and bad mouth it because it didn't suit your need for freedom and desire to do what ever you want to do!
its so fascinating how much negativity there is in the comments here.
I too was an orthodox jew person, however i came from a typical modern black hat family, and i was not oppressed, however i deeply was searching for God and could only find egos in that context.
I too have jumped, and it was the best thing i ever did.
We are always gonna have haters when we do something different, but only a jumper can understand.
grandma1906, in defending the absolute right of Ms. Feldman to share her story, you are revealing your bigotry. No one thinks they're better than the rest except YOU. Your comments reflect true arrogance. Feldman is simply telling her truth. She certainly would not want her words to permit people like you to unleash all manner of hatred. I grew up Muslim in Pakistan, but I recently challenged myself to question my hatred (indoctrinated) of other groups. And so should you.
@berriefunny " I recently challenged myself to question my hatred (indoctrinated) of other groups. And so should you." Kudos for you!! And I wish you the best!
leave this girl alone. she is speaking the truth!!! !nothing to do with your religion, just the way you people think you are better than the rest. trying to take over a neighborhood filled with catholics, with your illegal so called wig business.free money!!!!!!disturbing everyone around.WHAT ABOUT THE IRS??????????????????? bring it on we are waiting-----------------
@grandma1906 What does a Catholic "neighborhood" have with this whole issue?! Looks like you have a whole baggage of hate bottled up, and you found a site to unleash it! Otherwise, you didn't mange to string together one cohesive sentence, that has any connection whatsoever, with the above, nor anything discussed here! .
Grandma-No one forced the Catholics to sell and move away. 2nd and 3rd generation Italian Catholics don't want to stay in Brooklyn forever. They want to move to more upscale areas, but the Chassidim, because of the religion, must stay in their old Brooklyn neighborhoods and extend the borders when the growing population demands more space. The fact is, Liberal Democrats like Chuckie Schumer get elected with like 75-80% of the vote, ensuring the welfare rolls keep growing to massive proportions.
Deborah, you were my teacher and we all knew that you were not ok.... Your book is just confirming that you're still suffering with the same problems that you always had. You need help asap, Your problem is not about Jewish at all.
if someone goes to harvard and doesnt understand the classes, he goes to college on lower level, but doesnt say that the teachers dont know what they are talking about. same wiyh her, she should have moves somewhere that is not as strict for her, instead she doesnt understand etc.... she has major issues
Poor Deborah such a good soul that had bad luck to be born in a extreme family.
Judaïsme is beautiful and I would never leave it for any money.
The problem is that extremist make they own rules and not every person or child is made to live such a (hard) life.I hope Deborah wil realize one day that Judaïsme is teh way to live, and we are waiting for her to change.
@music35000 Hey there! I guess that itbreak is just desperate to attract more views on his 'upload' LOL I guess there are all kinds here... or perhaps are you new here?
@MrEmila29 lol!!! ur funny!!!! i personally think her mom helped her write the book...someone more powerful then herself is backing her....crazy bitch is kind words ur using...lol!!! she looke hapier than then she looks now....
@MrEmila29 she's not out of her mind, she did wat she felt was rite. idk if u read the article in the paper abt her (i think it was the times) but she hated being chasidic. and yes, she may have looked happy in those pictures, but thats wat u do it pictures, u look happy. and u no, u calling her a crazy bitch is prob the same attitude the people who pushed her away had, which made her feel more pushed away. ppl like u r the problem. learn to respect people and their decisions, and to just love
@DarcMavis After reading the article...Hmm from "hating being Hassidic' to bashing religion as whole and on top of that; publicizing it, is a huge step . IDK where you connect the dots. Hassidim are not my cup of tea as well....However I still respect them. In any case, there is much more to that story..(p.s I agree she should't be called those disgraceful names, no one deserves to be called bitch)
@MOE435 theres nothing wrong with publicizing it. freedom of speech and expression allows her to tell her story as if she was any other kind of victim of unright (ik thats not a word but im blanking on it at the moment) treatment.
@DarcMavis Hmm "Victim" perhaps...from whom? IDK? that's another story, as for her "story" she's certainly not pinning the blame of her "oppression" where it belongs!
@DarcMavis I am not commenting from a psychiatric perspective, hence, who precisely the blame is on, is not the issue. However, the very fact that her parents were not there for her and was raised in an extreme Hasidic environment, certainly does not help the situation. But I still fail to comprehend, why "Judaism" as a whole has anything to do with the 'oppressed environment' she was forcibly raised. There are plenty other options before abandoning all and still achieve her wishes.
Allow me to enlighten you. For the Chassidic denizens of Brooklyn, they learn that Chassidic Judaism is the only true form of Judaism and all other Jews (including Sephardim) are sub-creatures to be looked down on and ridiculed. Therefore, when they can't continue to live in that environment, they go extreme. They drop all practices (but always stay in NYC for some inexplicable reason). They don't say, "Gee, maybe I'll go to a Reform shul with a lady Rabbi." That's not an option for them.
@charlotteamalie Whilst I hear your point, but still makes no sense...so you saying; rather abandon everything than join a conservative community...or better, as they call in Hebrew 'Dati Leumi'! What I can think of, is she sounds like extremism is all she can relate to, so it is either Judaism/Orthodoxy with practically an extreme observant structure, or Non Observant on an extreme standpoint, i.e going all the way to the left! She never knew of anything liberal, centrally, in-between...Sad...
That's exactly what I'm saying. We all know that Conservative and Reform Judaism are a waste of time and a joke, but when the Chassidim can no longer bear Chassidism, they go way over to the other extreme. They were never taught that religion is one facet of a person's life, like career, sports and hobbies. They see religion it as a huge monolith to bear or cast off. Their neshamas are pure and can't stomach the blatant hypocrisy of Chassidim who lie, steal and cheat in the name of religion.
@charlotteamalie I do not know if it has anything to with being 'pure' I am speaking from a psychiatric standpoint; Extremism goes both ways! Basically, she could have accomplished all she supposedly wanted, w/o going all the way to...like eating crab. I have met plenty jews from all walks of life, and what she has done, going from Hassidic/Ultra Orthodox to eating crab is pretty extreme, most in her case do not cross that line, unless there is something more than that!
@MOE435 - OK if you want to talk clinical psychology, what better way to grab the world's (and Simon & Schuster's) attention than by eating crab in public and wearing stilletoes? (AKA Histrionic Personality Disorder). Or what better way to feed your Narcissistic Supply than by writing a lurid tell-all and getting Baba Wawa to pat you on the back and praise you in front of the entire world. She wouldn't be getting all the attention if she just became simple Debby Feldman from Riverdale.
@charlotteamalie "She wouldn't be getting all the attention if she just became simple Debby Feldman from Riverdale" LOL Good point! That is definitely a major factor in the make-up...And not to forget, her main issue of deprivation was the very issue of being "accepted" within her community,(i.e for whatever she stood for), thus seeking that acceptance from wherever she can obtain it, let it be by Barbra or whoever she's receiving her illusory acceptance, thinking the only way ..(cont.)
@DarcMavis I myself thought so as well, (you can see some of my earlier comments) but if you read the full article, she unfortunately attacks/ridicules some fundamentals of the very essence of Jewish law, like Mikvah, Taharot haMishpachah, etc. These are biblical laws that have been very much fundamental for Jewish women, in ALL sects through out the ages, since the beginning of Judaism, starting from Sarah in the Bible!!
@MOE435 very true, she does talk abt those, but i believe those were used as examples to show how strict jewish law is. which after she saw being a satmur chasid as being ridiculous, most likely saw these other halachot as ridiculous
@DarcMavis What is your point? That is precisely where here ignoramus mind stands; she has no clue how to differentiate b/w (ridiculous) hassidic customs and what is fundamental Biblical! As has long been recorded in the Talmud: "Im ein Daat - Havdalah Minayan"
@MOE435 you see that would pull us into a while 'nother discussion: what makes the hassidic laws ridiculous, but not the rest of the laws such as the ones in the gemara and mishna? i rly dont feel like gettin into that b/c it would be never-ending. on a side note, if one thinks abt it and comes to make a decision that some (perhaps many) halachot r ridiculous, that not being ignoramus, thats being a logic human being who made a clear, and concise decision based off reason and deep thought.
@DarcMavis " some (perhaps many) halachot r ridiculous, that not being ignoramus, thats being a logic human being" Well all I can say is I only WISH it was based upon LOGIC, i.e. have you done enough research and really studied the "logic" behind those Biblical/Talmudic laws, there is definitely "logic" behind all (as Maimonides explains them in detail) What you really have to research is your inner conscience; is it "logic" you are seeking? or is it merely 'lust, profane, materialism (cont.)
A beloved Hasidic father of many children, who cares so much for other human beings of all backgrounds, is in desperate need of a kidney! I am a kidney matchmaker - and kidney donor. Please contact me to help save his life! You can contact me through my website, SaveALIfe-DonateAKidney(dot)com. Being a kidney donor myself, I can give you all the info you need.
@music35000 yes...because we NEVER put our kids in seat belts- psycho moron!! i wouldnt even drive a half a block without seatbelts on all passengers required by law- v'neshmartem meod l'nafshoseichem... she is hapy cuz she can eat crabcakes!!! and date an irish catholic as stated in the NY Post....yippeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Deborah...you, obviously, had a very troubled childhood in a very ultra-Orthodox Chassidic community...by now you know, hopefully, that you can remain Orthodox by eating Kosher & keeping Shabbos & go to college, go on dates, see movies, own a computer & go to concerts & have a good time without sacrificing being Orthodox. Of course, this is against ultra-Chassidism. The closed world you grew up in was, obviously, not for you but there is a whole other world out there & you can be Frum!!
@gingergrey ditto!!!! even if she didnt want to b reigious at all- thats fine..but by slandering us & G-D...cuz its His Torah...she crossed a line most jews- even unaffiliated ones wouldnt...im ultra ortodox...and i still get to have tons of fun & jam to pitbull and rihanna....what a shame for her....throwing away her birthright...a beautiful heritage....
@thetruth2851 before you judge someone, maybe learn more about them. pick up her book and read it with an open mind, and open heart, then if u still feel the way u do, then fine. but dont bash her rite off the bat. she didnt do wat she did for no reason, no one is that illogical. just think abt that, think abt y she mite have left her heritage purposely
@gingergrey you sir/maam are the kind of person that everyone here should be like. understanding, yet caring, and giving smart suggestions that can make everyone happy. good on you
@music35000 totally- some posters here are so ignorant!!! they are either dumb and ignorant or anti semitic....come to our community- we will show u beauty, smart, intelligence, happiness and everything else!! its easy to read a book written by lying slanderous disgusting person- who has no self respect & shoved her OWN heritage in the gas chamber! yup! sounds extreme..but thats what she did-she is a self hating jew. her mom was jewish so its too bad tht she will ALWAYS be a JEW! lol!! sorry deb!!
"34 likes, 68 dislikes" ... hmm, (those angry J3ws), just sayin'. Saw her interview on The View, she seems like an extremely bright/smart, polite, kind, strong, honest woman, I think she is amazing.
@roch202020 glad u think she is amazing.....shee may very well be on a personal level- however that does NOT take away the fact that her book and accusations are LIES. are you hasidic? do you live in williamsburg? or have you lived there? if not, then you would sound smarter by keeping quiet- as you know NOTHING about our community. You listen to one woman who had a troubled childhood & is trying to blame & slander a whole religion cuz of it....& yo say "those angry jews" makes you sound dumb...
@hasidicgirl613 Hey there, seems like you still have your hands full here =]... In regard to "angry Jews" Hmm I wonder if the exact same book would have been about someone leaving Islam, how many "angry Muslims" would have been... more than just merely "angry"!
@MOE435 ha ha!!! ur so right!! if she was muzlim she would either be beheaded by now or in witness protection program together with casey anthoney....also, deb i was at a chassidishe wedding tonight...we missed you..too bad you couldnt dance with all of us hot sexy oppressed women!!! good u didnt come...cuz even the ex chassidim hate you...u crossed the line man...stay on the other side...untill you do teshuva!
@MOE435 hey, im alive n kickin..had to switch alias....too many ppl...watchig...ur right..if she were muslim, african american even christian- theyd have her head...prtotests at best....she is lucky we r jewish and kind forgiving ppl...i sent letters to every media outlet she spoke to...while i cnt erase the damage i can tarnish her name somewhat....
@thetruth2851 "i sent letters to every media outlet she spoke to" Oh my... you sure are on this from all ends! I guess you feel more like it hit home...
@thetruth2851 African Americans have people's heads when they decide not to be African American anymore? Yup, that makes sense. Why not just let her be her and you be you? Why go after her filled with hate and try to tarnish her name, when you could spend your time and energy being the best, most loving version of yourself?
moe- ur right! i should write a book!!!!! it would definitely inspire people to become or stay frum & find HaShem in their own way.....it won't be picked up by the media as it wouldnt boost ratings since it wouldnt be scandalous but rather inspiring...but hey i might give chizuk to others and do kiruv at the same time...maybe one day...
having a diffficult childood, troubles & challenges frm HaShem-does not give s/o a free pass 2 blame the world 4 the rest of their life!! im speaking frm experience...if a/o couldve become OTD-it shldve been me..but i took responsibility..went 2 therapy & never blamed my parents, G-D or a/o. B"H, im a survivor & frum, spiritual, give tons of tzeddaka, daven like im standing @ the kisai HaKavod & im happy & proud i stayed frum in spite of it all & being scouted many times by top NY modeling agencies
deb said she ws molested @ 12-if true is terrible & vry sad-i feel bad 4 her, hence my sugestion she get therapy!not write a book claiming 2 save oppressed women-we dont live in iran..she wrote abt intimate details of her most private moments w/her husband-she says she wld feel uncomfortable if her son wld read it(simon & shuster web)how abt feeling uncomfortable w/ e/o readng it?her feelings of oppression & feeling like an"animal" is frm her trauma-most women do not feel tht way in the community
@MOE435 yeah...so many inconsistancies...she did some heavy damage...all we can do is daven for her and especially her innocent son!!! R"L n one should ever be molested!! but 911 is the way to go....chas veshalom,,,,layla tov! besuros tovos!
@beautifulstar33 Good Luck to you too! " I avoid abrahamic faiths and I make sure they avoid me." Hmm in my dictionary "avoiding" means in any sense; whether from a negative or positive perspective, hence if I would to avoid ...I wouldn't even watch, comment or view this channel!
just finished watching OPRAH do a documentary on hasidic jews/ orthodoxy...u can see how moved she was..it was very nicely done with respect, truth, honesty and integrity....she asked detailed questions and got detailed answers- the truth..oprah wass able 2 sow the beauty deborah couldnt!! deborah has a neshama..so thts why the slanderous distorted book is shocking...but she isnt the 1st..in e/ generation-there were always such jews..hence v''lamalshinim in Shemona Esrai..(im quoting s/o on tht)
.hence v''lamalshinim in Shemona Esrai" Well I don't think she would fit into that category, as she seems to be just simple case of a depressed neshamah that needs serious help!
watching oprah on OWN channel 180 interviewing lubavitch chassidim....so nice to see the beauty rather than read the lies....e/ society and religion has extremism...but overall- the amount of chessed and achdus amongst chassidim, ultra orthodx and yidden in general beats e/o....am yisrael chai!!!!
Deborah- i hope you are reading some of the comments here- in di zeist as EISAV SOINEH L"YAAKOV......doesnt matter if you eat crabcakes or not...it so clear on this board... di meintz az zai haben dich nisht feint pinkt vi mich??!! youre smarter thn that...u sold your religion for what? a bissel kavod, gelt..the reason e/ media outlet is picking u up is cuz unfortunately we r in galus..& as u can c below...yeder soneh chaptzech tzi tzi der chilul HaShem vus di hust geshriben...zai hubben hana'ah

B"H Again.I posted here already.I was a DJ in the club and grew up in non frum family for 19 years of my life.I became completely frum with peyos, beard ect.The frum way of life is the most beautiful way you could possibly have. It's not about people it's between Hashem and you.I feel sorry for this girl, she lost it.
@refugeefromuslims wow!!! im sooo inspired by your story!!! surely HaShem has a lot of naches from u!!! i grew up totally chasidish...& i chose to be yeshivish/ a bit modern....my husband is clean shaven, bent down.. and i have a very respectful & gr8 relationship w/ my family. we chassidim r NOT trapped. its a lie. she couldve left without trashing judaism- taharas hamishpacha- our foundation....she is saying she is trashing hassidim- but by ridiculing mikva, nidda she is trashing the Torah.
@hasidicgirl613 Thanks.I am grateful to Hashem for everything I have.My wife is also Baalas Tshuva and we are building frum family on Torah foundation. We are not ultra ultra, but we have strong relationship with Hashem.I hope Dvora will do tshuva and Hashem will forgive her.Ken yehi Rotzon!
@refugeefromuslims wow! beautiful!amen!! May HKB"H reward u both w/ all HIS brachos in ths world & the next world!!we dont have 2 b ultra -we just have to b connected to HaShem & do our best 2 follow HIS Torah as best we can-no 1 is better thn the othr-only HaShem knws-they say whn mashiach comes- we will b suprised at who will b at the front row...we hav 2 do our best & try 2 make a kiddush HaShem whn we can-surely HaShem will 4give her after tshuva. i daven 4 her & all OTD's...theyre in pain..
@refugeefromuslims 'We are not ultra ultra, but we have strong relationship with Hashem' that is ALL that counts. As goes the old mussar saying; two Jews came up in heaven, one with a beard (he wasn't that gd fearing) one without, one was asked "Yid/Jew Yid/Jew - where is your beard"? the other was asked "Beard beard - where is the Jew" ...Anyways, I hope you get the point, and may gd bless you with all inner-peace!
@hasidicgirl613 " i grew up totally chasidish...& i chose to be yeshivish/ a bit modern....my husband is clean shaven, bent down.. and i have a very respectful & gr8 relationship w/ my family"
Hey Girl, perhaps you should write a book as well, titled: How to UnUnorthodox For Dummies! But seriously, kudos to you, for knowing how to lead and steer your life in the right direction! You seem to be a true Ashes Chayel even though you chose a diff path, you still and ever closer to HaShem (cont)
@MOE435 That is the beauty of Judaism ...no one can claim they have the monopoly of Judaism, everyone has their way of serving Gd, and at the same time, respects the other (generally speaking) . If one way is not for you, there is always another to chose from, as long as you believe in Gd and our sages, and follow the basic laws of the Talmud!
@MOE435 lol!ur so right! Im so close w/ my cousins whom wear shpitzels- most stringent form of hair covering-we go out 2 eat all the time-we respect e/o so mch!we share same values but e/ of us practice accordng 2 a level we feel comfortable-i respect their modesty while they respect my spirituality,tefilla,chessed-they dont judge me-i dont judge thm! thts the beauty of judaism!we all connect to G-D in the best way we e/ cn-most my cousins wnt 2 college & hav proffesional careers!deb is so off!!
@MOE435 u r 100% right!!!! Deborah's book is so full of lies...its sad...the amount of chessed in orthodox jewry is unparalleled to ANY group that is so large in population spanning several continents!!! hatzala, chaveirim, misaskim, RCCS,Bonei olam, A time, Puah, Tomchei Shabbos, masbia, chai lifeline...the list is endless...for every need..we have an organization to help each other...sad tht she exploited the most private, beautiful part of our heritage- Taharas hamishacha...oh well..her loss
@MOE435 yup!! sad that an outsider has more respect than one of our own....deborah had a difficult childhood...i wish i couldve sponsored her therapy....wouldve helped her more than this book will- in the long run!! (i have a theory that her mom wrote parts of the book or helped her tremendously with it..her mom left years ago..its imposible for a 25 satmar girl on her own to hav the $ 2 hire a publisher, agent & know how 2 pursue so much media attention...my opinion....)
@MOE435 from wht deorah said in the post & wht friends hav told me...her mom went off the derech whn deborah was a child & left her...her dad had mental illness so her holocaust survivor grandparents raised her (which must make ths all the more painful 4 thm...they survived to have their granddaughter cause such a massive chilul HaShem..i feel bad for them.)so deborah did NOT have your typicall chasidish childhood!! she keeps saying women r trapped..we r not..obviously she left..n/o trapped her!
@hasidicgirl613, this is America and she has EVERY right to her freedom of speech. And therein lies the problem with all religion (which I hate all equally) it seeks to silence the dissenters. shh shh please don't speak out, don't shatter the sweet delusions. Are some Hasids great people sure, are some christians sure, but once you insert religion in anything it poisons, just be good people - religion is a net evil and it is divisive. Those old days are gone religion is not a sacred cow anymore.
@kahluaqueen I am an Jewish orthodox man and have friends of different origins. They all young ppl and all of them believe in G-d and practice religion.New generation realizes more and more that G-d is watching over them and is helping them every step of the way.Everyone has his or hers own story how they came to this realization. This is reality and don't forget what is says on your money you use every day "In G-d we trust"!This is true and only truth.Good luck&G-d bless!
Deborah. I congratulate you on your courage and strength to take your life in your own hand.
I am Hasidic. And grew up in the same society as you. I agree with you that there are some flaws in our community that we need to correct. But overall I believe the Hasidic way of life provides a happy stable path in life based on family values, loving and helping every single Jew.
I feel sorry that it didn't work for you. Reading excerpts of your book we all feel vey bad for your pain and suffering
@hasidicgirl613 *sigh* why is it that people NEVER want to have exposed the bad things about their, race, culture, religion? You guys think you're soooooooo perfect. this is HER story! Get out sometimes, look around, look how many people are writing their stories about all sorts of things good and bad. You think you're immune, no one can talk about this "orthodox" life? Get over yourselves all of you, big deal she wrote a book you guys are sickening!
@kahluaqueen i the stuff she wrote were true- then good for her. but most of it are lies and slander that ignorant ppl like you choose to believe as truth. sad tht she had a hard childhood- w/o a mom or dad...but thts not an excuse to slander an entire religion.
@hasidicgirl613 oh sweetie the biggest lie is that you guys are even Jewish lol the real Jews or the ones that are written up in the Torah/Bible, whatever it's called these days were from Africa - dunno who you caucasians are but you're not the tribe...I could care less anyway but I laugh everytime I hear that Jewish talk and all the drama around the religion....last time I checked middle eastern people weren't stark white.....just saying lol
@hasidicgirl613 A lot of the religion has it's bad parts and I understand that, but you shouldn't be offended that someone left the religion. Take it with a grain of salt that people leave and they are free to do what they want. People will feel bitterly because their parents/family/loved ones disown them and choose religion over family. Which I find detestable.
@Zimadonna I'm not offended tht she left & i speak 4 many in my community. We r hurt tht she wld slander ALL of us.distort the beauty & core values of our religion.Run 2 e/ media outlet 2 sell her book of lies-paint us 2 b freaks of nature by ridiculing mikvah, taharas hamishpacha-its obvious she had a difficult childhood & i feel bad 4 her. she shldve gone 4 therapy rather thn take out her anger by slandering, lying & hurting an entire sect of judaism-which r thousands worldwide-& attack judaism 2
@kahluaqueen Hey, while this particular hassidic "Orthodox" lifestyle is by far my cup of tea (I can't imagine living it myself) Her story is obviously more of a case, as someone having a difficult childhood and, as a result other difficulties adjusting to whatever life... Hence, the easy way out, is NOT blaming herself/parents/others,etc. - but rather blaming "Religion" in entire! (Note: You do not have to be S Freud to figure that out) In any way, my heart goes out for her...sad...sad..
@MOE435 why is it sad, have you seen the plethora of books written by people that besmirch Christianity or Islam??!!! As I said before, the days of not questioning and dutifully following religion are OVER it's open (and rightly so) to scrutiny, debate and picking apart. And at the core you might find nothing just some insecure dude's puffed ego. However this is America and you can get any type of book published and might I add a country where capitalism is KING! Where did you think you were??
@kahluaqueen read the chapter in the quran called yousef and in the old testament called josef and you'll see how similar they are. jews/muslims both circumcize their boys, are monotheistic, and follow similar prophets. they're genetically alike too, except for ashkenazis, who have some khazar blood in them. yet, they treat arabs, their brethren by religion, like garbage. terrible. btw, hasidic jews have honor killings like muslims too. i know of such a case.
@beautifulstar33 "except for ashkenazis, who have some khazar blood in them" Hmm I wonder where and which book that came from?! By YOUR logic; you, and other vicious __ have something in common, that is the infamous Kazhar myth! Need I say more..... (For the ones who are not familiar, its an old Antisemitic myth; European Jews are not real Jews, and therefore are not the chosen...Israel is not theirs; by religion or right in any way (sic) etc. etc.....)
G-D created yo for a reason the face that you grew up in a hard situation was a test of faith that ever single person in this world goes through at some point in this world no matter what religion u r!!!! What G-D wnts from us to see that test as a chance to come closer and to realize our true potential and use that potential to come closer to G-D and realize u are special G-D chose us @ har sinai and we made a treaty to uphold the Jewish law and not to run the other way when it gets hard!!
her grandarents had to survive the holocaust so that their grandaughter will cause on one of the greatest chilul HaShem ever....i feel so bad for her family. Her grandparents did so much for her. her mother abandoned her. her father was mentally ill.. they raised her and this is how she thanks them!! she could've left- no one would care. its the lies and slander about judaism- our core foundation- taharas hamishpacha...that she ridiculed & is using to cash in on moeny & fame that hurts us.
@hasidicgirl613 I hear ya, sis! Good point! Although, I am not hassidic or ultra...this is uncalled for! She doesn't have to publicly announce her problems and blame religion as provoking it all ...

It's where all good women belong.
granolanutpunch 4 days ago
@granolanutpunch Im not talking about that. The outside world is a very corrupt, cold place, not at all like where she came from. She does not have to take part in an arranged marriage, even if she was still there.

@SarahRachel59 In ancient China there was a sea turtle that was captured and became the emperors prized pet. He received the best food, attention, and habitat that money and infinite power could buy, yet he was never again allowed to roam the oceans of the world.
He lived there nearly 500 years before he perished. At least 300 years longer than he would have in the wild.
Don't you think he would have preferred to die splashing in the surf and the mud of the "outside world"?
granolanutpunch 4 days ago
@SarahRachel59 I agree with you, and if anything will keep her is the fear of the treatment she will get, upon willing to return. In a way, she bought it upon herself by burning every bridge to Judaism there is, but I believe, and I know there are many Jews that will willingly accept her, no matter the circumstances, as they say, you are always a Jew!

Why do religious zealots get so bent out of shape when someone (especially one of their own) is critical of their very narrow worldview? Is it because independent thinking threatens their very existence??
There is nothing but vile, psychotic criticism from inside the cult, here.
pokechopped 1 week ago

No whore would behave the way she does.

grandma1906, in defending the absolute right of Ms. Feldman to share her story, you are revealing your bigotry. No one thinks they're better than the rest except YOU. Your comments reflect true arrogance. Feldman is simply telling her truth. She certainly would not want her words to permit people like you to unleash all manner of hatred. MOE435 2 weeks ago

MOE435 2 weeks ago
@MOE435 theres nothing wrong with publicizing it. freedom of speech and expression allows her to tell her story as if she was any other kind of victim of unright (ik thats not a word but im blanking on it at the moment) treatment.
DarcMavis 2 weeks ago
@DarcMavis Hmm "Victim" perhaps...from whom? IDK? that's another story, as for her "story" she's certainly not pinning the blame of her "oppression" where it belongs!
MOE435 2 weeks ago
@MOE435 so in ur opinion who should she pin the blame on? Her family?
DarcMavis 2 weeks ago
@DarcMavis I am not commenting from a psychiatric perspective, hence, who precisely the blame is on, is not the issue. However, the very fact that her parents were not there for her and was raised in an extreme Hasidic environment, certainly does not help the situation. But I still fail to comprehend, why "Judaism" as a whole has anything to do with the 'oppressed environment' she was forcibly raised. There are plenty other options before abandoning all and still achieve her wishes.
MOE435 2 weeks ago
Allow me to enlighten you. For the Chassidic denizens of Brooklyn, they learn that Chassidic Judaism is the only true form of Judaism and all other Jews (including Sephardim) are sub-creatures to be looked down on and ridiculed. Therefore, when they can't continue to live in that environment, they go extreme. They drop all practices (but always stay in NYC for some inexplicable reason). They don't say, "Gee, maybe I'll go to a Reform shul with a lady Rabbi." That's not an option for them.
charlotteamalie 2 weeks ago
@charlotteamalie Whilst I hear your point, but still makes no sense...so you saying; rather abandon everything than join a conservative community...or better, as they call in Hebrew 'Dati Leumi'! What I can think of, is she sounds like extremism is all she can relate to, so it is either Judaism/Orthodoxy with practically an extreme observant structure, or Non Observant on an extreme standpoint, i.e going all the way to the left! She never knew of anything liberal, centrally, in-between...Sad...
MOE435 2 weeks ago
That's exactly what I'm saying. We all know that Conservative and Reform Judaism are a waste of time and a joke, but when the Chassidim can no longer bear Chassidism, they go way over to the other extreme. They were never taught that religion is one facet of a person's life, like career, sports and hobbies. They see religion it as a huge monolith to bear or cast off. Their neshamas are pure and can't stomach the blatant hypocrisy of Chassidim who lie, steal and cheat in the name of religion.
charlotteamalie 2 weeks ago
@charlotteamalie I do not know if it has anything to with being 'pure' I am speaking from a psychiatric standpoint; Extremism goes both ways! Basically, she could have accomplished all she supposedly wanted, w/o going all the way to...like eating crab. I have met plenty jews from all walks of life, and what she has done, going from Hassidic/Ultra Orthodox to eating crab is pretty extreme, most in her case do not cross that line, unless there is something more than that!
MOE435 2 weeks ago
@MOE435 - OK if you want to talk clinical psychology, what better way to grab the world's (and Simon & Schuster's) attention than by eating crab in public and wearing stilletoes? (AKA Histrionic Personality Disorder). Or what better way to feed your Narcissistic Supply than by writing a lurid tell-all and getting Baba Wawa to pat you on the back and praise you in front of the entire world. She wouldn't be getting all the attention if she just became simple Debby Feldman from Riverdale.
charlotteamalie 2 weeks ago

MOE435 2 weeks ago
@MOE435 very true, she does talk abt those, but i believe those were used as examples to show how strict jewish law is. which after she saw being a satmur chasid as being ridiculous, most likely saw these other halachot as ridiculous
DarcMavis 2 weeks ago
@DarcMavis What is your point? That is precisely where here ignoramus mind stands; she has no clue how to differentiate b/w (ridiculous) hassidic customs and what is fundamental Biblical! As has long been recorded in the Talmud: "Im ein Daat - Havdalah Minayan"
MOE435 1 week ago
@MOE435 you see that would pull us into a while 'nother discussion: what makes the hassidic laws ridiculous, but not the rest of the laws such as the ones in the gemara and mishna? i rly dont feel like gettin into that b/c it would be never-ending. on a side note, if one thinks abt it and comes to make a decision that some (perhaps many) halachot r ridiculous, that not being ignoramus, thats being a logic human being who made a clear, and concise decision based off reason and deep thought.
DarcMavis 1 week ago
@DarcMavis " some (perhaps many) halachot r ridiculous, that not being ignoramus, thats being a logic human being" Well all I can say is I only WISH it was based upon LOGIC, i.e. have you done enough research and really studied the "logic" behind those Biblical/Talmudic laws, there is definitely "logic" behind all (as Maimonides explains them in detail) What you really have to research is your inner conscience; is it "logic" you are seeking? or is it merely 'lust, profane, materialism (cont.)
MOE435 22 hours ago
@MOE435 There is definitely a very thin line you are venturing, upon proclaiming "logic" unless, you claim to be an atheist or at least agnostic!

Which I find detestable.

hasidicgirl613 3 weeks ago
@kahluaqueen Hey, while this particular hassidic "Orthodox" lifestyle is by far my cup of tea (I can't imagine living it myself) Her story is obviously more of a case, as someone having a difficult childhood and, as a result other difficulties adjusting to whatever life... Hence, the easy way out, is NOT blaming herself/parents/others,etc. - but rather blaming "Religion" in entire!
