lol ive been playing this song for like 4 weeks and this is the first time ive ever heard the whole song as one peice and our concert is in a week <,<
Certainly a most popular piece in the concert hall. What saddens me, is that outside of Symphonie Fantastique and Roman Carnival, much of Berlioz's music is neglected. Yet, we wrote amazing works like Harold in Italy, the Waverly Overture, Romeo and Juliet (the Balcony Scene one of his finest creations along with the delightful Queen Mab Scherzo), the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens and my personal favorite the Les Franc Juges Overture (his best overture). This is the true Berlioz.
oh we played this in band! sorta... kinda... ish, but it was so complex and hard so we decided not to pursue it. hopefully i'll play it in the future.
It's a nice piece. Really French then really Italian in style, especially the fast music. The ending is really alarming, it's great.
It's good music (I like it) which the Symphonie Fantastique isn't (to me), which I tried to listen to again tonight. I don't know how many times I've given up on that. It's a disintegrating piece. Much of the first movement is very good, then the waltz is lovely, charming, a little downhill though. The 3rd movement can be lovely. But after that it's dire.
I know it's insanity and about that, but it's bad music after the slow movement. There is some interesting writing for instruments in March To The Scaffold, though the music itself isn't pleasant. It's the type of music which might grab you though the first time or few times, and I think many people who like it still just have that memorised experience.
I said disintegration, and that's the story too, but did he have to lapse into symbolising this with quality of music (often just sounds)?
Hmmm. Haha - it's easy for the nutcase to be the listener if he / she expects intellectual stimulation as the character's plight and state of mind descends towards the end of the symphony. How many novel writers symbolise poor state of mind by bad writing? It's not often commented on. And it's so long, the last movement especially - a string of noises of witches' fingernails or something and so on, and bells which let you know that there is music from churches on earth.
I watched all of this with mounting irritation that the camera operator's point of view was absolutely unchanging. Was there nothing of interest to see in the orchestra? Were there no movable cameras available? Is the purpose of this tape solely to provide instruction to students of conducting? Boo!
Le Carnaval Romain, what a piece! I think that the fact that our Hector could not play the piano, (he gave the guitar a good plucking apparently), and composed 'ab initio' (didn't wrire for the piano and orchestrate, but did it direct) is what made him such a master of orchestration.
That makes sense in a way. Another great orchestrator by the name of Shostakovich would also write in this way (away from the piano) although Shostakovich was an incredible pianist, and could probably have been one of the greatest of the Russian performers.
I played the tambourine in this piece in a high school orchestra... ah, memories.

@Clemsonandcubsfan1
You have no idea what you're talking about, as this IS the original. I doubt you're related to Berlioz or even know who he is.

The percussionist plays snare drum instead of tambourine... That´s wrong!!
hermannhesse1973 3 years ago
Yeah, it really doesn't make nearly the same effect with the snare instead of the tambourine.
