She reminds me of Bjork sometimes in the way she defies convention, but I prefer her poetic style to Bjork and almost even Patti Smith. Patti Smith is so self-consciously an artist, but Cocco just is.
It's great to read some of these messages. I've been a big fan of Cocco since my friend introduced me to her music a few years ago.
I hope Cocco's performance highlights the agony the people of Okinawa are going through being forced by the US and Japanese governments to live with the danger of Futenma Air Station or the destruction of Oura Bay.
She gave a message why she had made the song and what for she would sing the song at the place before she started to sing. We can see it on her web page. So much different from some other singers, Cocco's concert talk is always sincere. It expresses her humanity and the way of living as well as her songs...Touching.
I first heard Cocco on live earth and was deeply moved by her. I do not understand the words, but I don't have to. The voice, the emotions have had a profound effect on me. She released a CD of this on Nov. 17, it also has Heaven's Hell on it. I already ordered mine. Thank you for posting this.
@wowJhil I fuckin' agree! They have this natural atmosphere with them which a lot of people nowadays have lost, which is sad :( But I love them both :)
The Dugongs were already gone because of the US after the war. It saddened the people of Okinawa. She is from there and very proud of it. Live Earth happened July 7th 07 and a few weeks before she sang this song 2 Dugong were filmed in the sea off Okinawa. The Dugong have come home, this is the reason for the emotions and it is just for them that she sings. Live Earth was my first time hearing her sing and I was deeply moved by her. She is my favorite singer and probably always will be.
The sea where the Dugongs have come back is the place the US military and Japanese government plan to reclaim and to build a new US Marines base. Not a few Okinawa people are against this, but the movement is in a delicate situation for the US military including the plan being important economically to the region at the same time. But those two Dugongs have come back to the very sea beyond such complex circumstances of human beings as if a message to people. That would explain her tears, too.
I'm really glad you like her, cocco has been my favourite for many years now. she retired from singing in 2001 but came back 5 years later, and I'm so happy she's singing again :)
I was so glad to learn that she was back again! I went from sad to happy as I read her wiki page :p It's with her like many other artists I like, that it isn't the type of music that either works or not, but the voice!
I explained that in the video description, thinkinglass. It's youtube's fault, because the video I have is perfectly fine. And, unfortunately, I can't do anything about it.
Hey, Kit. I'm pretty sure this song has never been released, so finding an mp3 is nigh impossible. However, I've ripped the audio from the video file and converted it to .mp3, so I can send you that, if you want.

I think she's sad about dugongs being on the verge of extinction in okinawa. she often gets this emotional on stage

I like her ways, she is really different. Almost like Björk in a way, if you know that artist.
