I was lucky enough to see ZZ Top in their early and prime years. Excellent live band. I remember hearing about a company, not sure if it was Bic or not, offering them a mil if they would shave them off, at the time a mil to them was probably chump change so they declined. Probably wouldn't shave them off today either since it is part of their trademark image.

Well, it was a few years ago, but I would see him after the fact...very recently after being on TV i,e, MTV, live shows here in town...and other appearances, and the long beard was back on. 2 foot long beard, then no beard. He's very skinny, and the beard fills him out...liver issues, I've heard. I talked to him about 10 years ago about Hendrix's guitar from the Moving Sidewalks days, at a ice cream place in Montrose..no beard, then I saw a show about a year latter, two foot long beard.
