This is so incredibly powerful. Not just the vocals, but the incredible acting skills. Natalie portrays all of the motion of Ophelia's madness in this scene, and your heart just breaks for her when she pulls out the knife. Simply amazing!
I saw this production at the Met (unfortunately without Dessay) 4 Times!!! Larmore was amazing, Keeneyside was amazing, and Dessay's replacement was unbelievable!!! However in this video, you hear the most amazing applause I have EVER heard for a soprano in my life....it's INSANE...this is possibly my favorite ACT in opera...I pray I get to see Dessay sing it one day!!! x
The ONLY bad thing about a performance like this is that you have to roll around on the floor for 2 minutes while the audience screams your praises! Hahah. Truly stellar rendition of this aria...
oh i know!! that just shows what an incredible actress she is...to be able to hold that character together for the whole applause! it's so amazing to just hear the audience completely explode immediately after the music ends...it gives you chills! i can't imagine being in her place! it has to be incredible!
I am not sure she "has" to roll around on the floor. I think she is in her role. She keeps all her concentration and feelings alive. Really amazing! I have no words.
she does this SO WELL!!!!! that was aboslutely INTENSE!!! i was stunned and completely entranced by what she was doing on that stage. It was absolutely heart breaking!! Natalie Dessay is my favorite coloratura soprano and i definitely use her as a model! she is just brilliant!
im friekin speechless! this woman was BORN for the theaters.....what she expresses with her performances is FAR beyond singing and acting....its the essence of Ophelia herself!
this is by far a supreme performance... about 15 minutes ago, I didn't care for Dessay with her other performances but this, WHOA!, I'm utterly moved into tears. See you at the Met next year!
She will be singing this role in March 2010 at the Met and every time I think of this I start thinking that I will need to make some sacrifices and see that performance. (Especially since Jennifer Larmore is slated to sing Gertrude- I love Jennifer Larmore too.)
I discovered her with Ophelia's mas scene, and since then, I just love her, especially when she's singing/playing this role. I don't know how, but I've got to go to NY in 2010 !
it's really hard to sing lying down especially breathing wise...how does she DO that?
