That was really helpful to learn about the 7d but what do you think of the canon 5d mark iii do you think the 7d is good or should the jump be made to the 5d for the $2000
They're the same cameras as far as their capabilities are concerned. Slightly differ only in price but that's not the big point to consider. I think it's on the preference of the users that matters when choosing between these cameras. Image quality is also more important than video.
Can't go wrong with either one really. I personally hate the canon controls and the lack of ISO limit set for auto ISO in the canon. I can care less for video as it is .0001% of my shooting
sorry but I have both and the picture quality is better in d300s than canon d7, but in video is better canon d7 than nikon 300s, both of then are good cameras, but Nikon is slightly better, nikon is very friendly and easy to use, sorry about my English.
Fast and accurate in d300s , the 7d is fast but the accurate?, I recommend you compare the cameras not for what they say but by what they do, my winner d300s
I have a D90 and looking to upgrade to a faster camera seeing I shoot mostly action shots and the D90 cannot keep up for my needs. I was going to buy the D300 but was talked out of it because the D90 did video. After getting it home I realized that the D90 only shot 5 mins in HD and it was not auto focus. I really do not care about video because I have a camcorder for that. But seeing the Canon 7D can do 29mins of 1080, that is attractive but does the D300s or 7D auto focus when shooting vids?
the d300s has dual card slot and better low light shooting, features that might be of more importance than video capabilities or MP for a lot of people, so it really depends on personal use.
@richardmilk if you havent read reviews and compared photos, the despite the 18 mp of canon (more likely to produce grainy photos), its still managed to create cleaner photos than the nikon in darker lighting.. :)
Hi! Great review. Thanks. Megapixels - I use a Nikon D200 and never even fully use its all 10.2 megapixels. I don't have to shoot the highest resolution still get decent pics. So 18Mpixls not really important everywhere but in just some situations. D300s has 51 active focus points compared to Cannon's 19. Overall both nice cameras. I consider Nikon.
The Canon wins, more shots per second, and an 18MP Cmos. Dual card feature is lame, and only if you fail to invest in the right card the first time. The body is more easy to handle on the Canon, and it feels more grippy. The lcd viewer is hands down better on the Canon. Everyone is now using Video on the Dslr's including Ron Howard's films. And lets face it, nobody shoots at iso over 20k anyway.
The d300s is a much more functional body with easier access to ISO etc. Also the dual card feature beats the 7D hands down. Also the D300s has a screen protector and has better grip. Not dissing the 7D but I prefer the D300s. As for video, I don't find this important as this is a DSLR and not a camcorder. With the 12.3mp sensor compared to the 18mp sensor... the Nikon will have better noise performance. These are the Important things about photography... not video capabilities.
You forgot a huge key point. High Iso Performance, specially since nikon is extremely known for great High ISO performance, also when you put a big amount of pixels onto that size a sensor it tends to increase noise levels, IE worse high ISO performance etc.
You didn't mention anything about low ISO performance, and your bias clearly shines through because the categories you used go to the strengths of the Canon. The menus, and low light abilities of the D300s are the best on the market. With the low light performance and ergonomics, I believe this is a tie! :)
I think, they're different cameras! 18mp against 12.3mp! and the video 1080p against 720p. Canon's control is harder than Nikon, with shortcuts to anything. And about the results? WE just can't see any difference. Only if you are a CSI inspector. Anyways, nikon is cheaper. I want a cheap equipment, that gives me a good result. that's my 3rd digital nikon D80, D200, now D300s. Migrate to canon cost too much, you gotta sell all your stuff and learn how to quickly get in on the canon's menus!
Also the Nikon is much easier to use 1 handed, try holding a burger in you're left hand and the 7D while out and turn it on without the neck strap. I have been in this situation before.
@TechStopsHere, Yeah, or a drink ^^. We have a frod Focus and there is litteraly no cup holders in the back seat, anyway I was holding a drink and was taking photo's out the back window, and its not the easiest thing to do with 2 hands but I managed to score some alright cropable photo's. Oh I also use Nikon so I can turn it on and off really fast, especialy while holding my big lenses.
@TechStopsHere Who uses nikon and Canon, use for love! I really respect canon products, canon and nikon r great brands. If you have the right lenses, u rocks with both! Great vid tho. But when u r a fanboy u always forget the positive thinks on your oponnent! right?
@175myles Hahaha thats funny, i turn my 7d on when i get where im going and it doesnt go off for the rest of the day usually, you can make it auto shutoff. and it goes back on faster than using the switch just by tapping the shutter button halfway down. i really do like the 7d better than the nikon, i dont find it hard to use at all.
@dankhimself, This may be the case, but sitting in the back of a car after a food stop with your camera next to you on the seat after looking at photo's, you see something you like and with the Nikon its a 1 handed operation.
@175myles Yea i never shut my 7d off, it does it by itself. 0 hand operation! I love nikon too i plan on grabbing a cheap dslr to use all my old lenses from my 35mm days. ive also grown partial to canon because ive purchased a small fortune in glass so im very used to canon as i use it constantly.
@dankhimself, I'm not biassed towards Nikon because I own one but I was so close to buying a 7D, the fact I already spent money on Nikon stuff swayed me, but I don't regret it, I now have a D7000 and I love it.
@jrhineberger Do you have any information to back up your opinion? Coming here and bluntly stating that the k-5 is better than the canon does nothing but make you look ignorant. Most consumer reviews will say that the k5 competes very well with the 7d and even some of the high end nikons (d7000, d3x). But in all honesty, it is my personal bias to choose canon over pentax. You just can't beat the red ring beauties ;) Glass > body!
I am looking for a successor of my Oly E-3 and I have still many doubts. I used to shoot with Nikon (F3) and that's where my heart goes to. But...
I've seen many testreports and I compared D300s with 60D, but still waiting for more info about the new D7000.
What I see in your comparison with the 7D is not all that important to me. I can live with 7 fps in stead of 8. I don't care about HD movies And so on.
I have no idea - the 7D has come down in price somewhat of late. It may be that NIkon hasnt revised its prices as much a Canon.....i thkn the D300s wukk gave to be reduced in price once the D7000 hits the shelf
Im a big cannon user i have the 7d with many lenses, befor i purchas my 7d i did a lot of research on both d300s & eos7d, and i found the 7d was made after the d300s, so cannon just had that slightly edg, however if ur the kind of person who only cares about still images and not worrying to much about blowing it up and stuff, the d300s takes a slightly better picture coz of the 51 f/p.
in all honesty, I am a Nikon user but I am not biased.. yet I found this review a tad biased towards Canon. My friend has the 7D and he even says my D300S and his 7D are pretty much the same.. but for sure his 7D whips my slr in movie mode.
