there are 2 reasons why he was "laying on the horn". First, he was approaching a crossing for which there was a whistling requirement. Second, when the horns are mounted above the cab on the loco, they will pack with snow as the train strikes drifts. The best way to prevent this is to sound the horn as the snow would be entering, to prevent it. Sometimes in severe Canadian winters in years past, we would have the horn pack with snow anyway, and it was rather useless when it was barely audible.
@Cndr289932 AND the fact that the engineer saw people standing next to the tracks. In essence, by laying on the horn, he is saying "I SEE YOU.STAND STILL!DO NOT DO ANYTHING FOOLISH!!
@Badchoicesmade Did you see the commercial where it showed teachers and bosses killing people who want to reduce their carbon emissions? Type in 10:10 Mini-Movie: No Pressure
That's great!! While cars and planes are stopped, the trains just plow on through - literally. What show was this on? Sounds like the announcer from "Funniest Pets & People".
Your right, I used to love doing just that, asked the section guy not to plow,I will do my own plowing lol.

@gebass6 Or it could just be that the train approached a crossing, even if the blowing was a bit excessive.

Plowing deep snow will plug the whistle with snow. Whistling often will keep it clear.

Run 6-7 with plenty of sand! I've done that. :P
RRSloth 4 years ago
You mean the train drops sand on the tracks as it goes?
goose1077 4 years ago
Yep. Locomotives carry sand that you can deposit on the rail for better adhesion. Flip a toggle on the control stand and it's pneumatically applied.
RRSloth 4 years ago
that was cool
