@rrichmondboy Because first of all the white people called "WHITE abolitionist"helped The black People travel to Canada and There singing about Black people in the song about how they suffered from slavery.
@xbeyondlovex still doesnt answer my question..us africans hardly know a thing about this song ontop of that..if you search it all you see is caucasians its a reason for everything and a reason for the question
I've loved this song and its meaning ever since I was in 4th grade when we sang it in choir. I've never heard it sung anywhere else the way we sang it then.
This is one of the best videos I have viewed on YouTube. The performance was top notch - excellent! The commentary was well done, and the background images with the painting, the display of the big dipper, were wonderful additions. I used this for a lesson I shared with my classmates (I am an elementary education major). Everyone was greatly impressed - especially my instructor. What a tremendous resource. Thank you very much!
I very familiar with this song, but I never really knew what the drinking gourd was pointing to or what it meant- I never thought of the big dipper and where it points to. Thanks!
Excellent, well done version. This story should be made into a movie about the pre-civil war struggle for freedom and the oppressed. What a story that would be.
