As we age, our voices change some. Not drastically, but some voices get deeper, some weaker, some change pitch...we all age differently.  Now consider someone like Rick who has been singing since he was a teenager. You're talking over 40 years of singing and screaming. That can take a toll on the vocal cords. If he sounds different to some, it's probably just because he's older (who isn't?) and it's just a change his body (and what a body it is!!!!) is going through.

Yeah, I don't think he smokes either. It's obvious he works out - I mean, just look at those biceps! He's in better shape than men half his age. And his voice is way to smooth to be a smoker. Just listen to someone who does smoke (Mel Gibson, for instance) and you can tell right away, because the voice is very gravelly and raspy. Rick's voice isn't like that, so I doubt seriously that he smokes.
