Great videos! Do you trip the hair on the inside of the legs and the private parts at all? What about the belly? Also, do you use regular scissors from a beauty supply store or are scissors for trimming dogs different? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just did my first grooming on my cocker today for the first time, I really wish I had seen this video before. I cut all of his hair, o well, I am sure it will grow back eventually so I can start letting the skirt grow. Thanks so much!!
My Cocker Spaniel Lara has a groomer, but she does not like her paws trimmed, so I do it beforehand. Having watched your video I should be much better at doing it in future, thank you.
If you want the legs and skirt short but still able to see the pattern, what blade length would you use on the skirt and legs if you used a #7 on the back, would a 3 3/4 work well? And if you use the longer blade on the legs, would you also do the same on the skirt? Thanks.
Thank you so much for these videos. I've just begun training to be a groomer, and I was having some trouble with traditional Cocker cuts, these videos helped like you would not believe!
@TheMeijerra NO, not cutting the nail, every once in a while you will feel the nail between your scissor blades but you don't need to be cutting with a bunch of force. If you just scissor lightly you will not cut a toe nail nor would you cut the skin badly. I always use a very light touch when scissoring. It's a bit scary at first but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad.
@mykeee No I was letting him grow out so I didn't trim his legs or skirt or chest. If you like a short look you can take a longer blade over them or if you just want to neaten them you just basically fluff everything up and out and scissor down to even it all out.
@starnarcosis Hahaha, most Cockers are convinced of this. All I can tell you is to hold on for dear life and clip when you get a still moment... practice makes perfect so keep at it, play with your dogs feet while relaxing around the house and get him/her used to them being touched, you can even get a mens shaver and just use the non clipping end to message the paws to get them used to vibration and such. ;) Good luck!
Hi! I'm going to do the puppy cut on my cocker, is there any special way I should do the legs? Just clipper down with the hair? And how do you do the top of the foot? Thank you.
@ErikaD6 Yes, you can just clip down the leg as you did with the rest of the body if you want your dog all one length use one blade if you want the legs longer you can use a longer blade. Always with the lay of the coat. I fluff everything on the top of the paw up and scissor it round when cliping the full dog. You could watch my Shih Tzu grooming video, it shows how to do a regular clip down. It's basically the same for any dog.
My cocker's fur has gone long, how do I trim the front and hind legs? Her fur is straight and it's not puffy like yours. I tried trimming it by gathering all fur towards the paw and cutting like how you showed it here, but I'm not sure if that's correct. And, that's as far as I got, I'm hoping to trim it a bit shorter.
@sakuralyn You would trim the feet the same way I do in the video. As far as trimming the legs and skirt it just depends on how short you want it. If you just want it neatened then use sissors, comb everything out from the legs and scissor straight down, the skirt you would comb all of it down and scissor the length you want it to be. If you want it a good bit shorter you could use a longer blade then you used on the body. ;)
Thank you so much for your videos! I will soon give my cocker boy his first grooming and am studying your instructions carefully before I take the plunge.
thanks for these great videos. I have 4 cockers and am going broke having them groomed at $60 apiece. I'm going to try to attemp to do them myself and these videos have been absolutely a godsend. Thanks.
Nice! One question, I groom my own cockers and rescue cockers at intake (the coat is always horrible, esp around the feet). How did you get the fur between the pads so close? I love that they almost looked shaved between the pads, that is where I have a lot of problems. Thanks for the lesson for the beveled edge! Nice!
I like your videos, their informational. But that looks like the worst cocker paw I have ever seen. His foot is cut way too high in the front and his nails are exposed...
@michellensean Yes I did expose his toe nails a bit, but you know, it's definatley not the worst one I have seen so you haven't see too many I guess LOL :)
@spanielmom93 , I agree with you, that is a good foot you did, looks much better than the before comparison. Thank you very much for putting that out there.
I wish I could do that!!! my dog will not sit still and she trys to bite the clipers not very good so we have resorted to useing sissors on the whole coat!!!
Your videos are so helpful! I've been "dabbling" in the grooming for a few months - practicing on friends dogs and my own. I will be attempting to groom my first Cocker Spaniel. I am nervous though w/ our horrible temperatures right now (single digits and lower) of going so short on her. Can I ask what you do in the winter?
Honestly I do the same thing... My dogs all stay inside except for quick potty breaks outside and they also have sweaters if needed. If the dog stays outside for longer periods of time you could just use a longer blade, like a 4 maybe but it just won't look as nice as a 7. ;)
I wanted to ask you what kind of scissors you're using for his paws and legs. I don't have very good scissors and I gave my Cocker a bad hair trim around her legs and I want to get some new scissors. Please let me know.
Thanks for your videos. I decided to try my hand with my girls to save money & get it done the way I like it. My groomer always makes the back too short and Kami gets cold. My other dog is a cocker/hound mix with diabetes & I need to keep her hair short for glucose testing & so I can see what I'm doing when I give her a shot. I've been doing feet for years but I didn't know about the bevel. I just knew that if I found myself stepping on their foot hair it was time for a trim!
I've groomed my own cockers for years now. They never really looked professional as I didn't have the scissors, just professional clippers. Your video was TRULY helpful to me. We just adopted a rescue dog who's extremely frightened. He's been away from the mill for 6 months now and has only had 2 baths. He will be in a video on puppy mill dogs, so I want him to look his best! Thanks so much for your easy to follow videos. Any suggestions where I could get a grooming table for home use?
Thanks for sharing all your vids, very helpful :) A #7, 10 blades are fine to use correct? What do you suggest what thinners and scissors I should purchase to trim and cut around the dog? The cockers skirt, is there any other trim/grooming needed to do? Anyway thanks again :)
Yes #7 is what I prefer to use on the basic pattern but if you like it shorter then you can use a #10. As far as Sissors and thinning shears go you just need to try some out. They are all very different and you really need to find what works best for you. I recommend lots of teeth on the thinning shear though, the more teeth the better the less blunt the cut will be. You can take sissors or thinning shears to the skirt to neaten or shorten it if needed. My boy just isn't long enough to trim here
Hi- Your video's gave me the confidence to start grooming our cocker myself. You explain things so well. How do you trim the legs so they are even? My clippers came with 3 blades, and 4 attachment combs. But everything I have tried has left her legs looking really choppy. I would appreiciate any advice. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Thanks for your comment. As far as legs go I use my sissors to get them more even. If you fluff all the hair out away from the leg then sissor straight down just taking off the uneven parts... does that make sense? If not then you can watch any of my other videos to get the basic idea. ;) Thanks again!
Thanks for answering. I did as you suggested and she looks perfect. Thank you so much for posting these video's. Because of the loss of employment there was no way to keep getting her groomed professionally. Honestly without sounding conceded she looks better now than when she was groomed by the "professionals". She never looked like your dogs look, she was a mess. But thanks to your willingness to share, she now looks great. Thanks again.
Wonderful! I am glad I could help your girl look her best! :) I would love to see your girl's new haircut, you should send me a video of her new doo! :)
Great instructional video here! I'm a first-time Cocker mom, and Sugar Bear looks remarkably like Danny. He loves being groomed, and I hope to try out a new pair of clippers soon with him and hope for the best. Thanks for your tips about cleaning up the paw area for that understated stacked look at the feet. Sugar Bear is in the "in between" phase with his coat, but pretty soon his skirt should be filling in, too. Danny is adorable!
I've been doing my own cockers for several years and their feet always looked funny. They thank you for the video!
Q1. What causes "clipper marks" - little lines in the clip? I'm using an Oster A5 and do a #10 on their backs.
Q2. How are the legs trimmed for a "semi-show" cut - I leave medium feathering on the skirt. The legs always look ragged and I can't figure out how to get them "nice".
Q3. What is the correct way to use the clip-on clipper combs?
A1. Either your clipper isn't fast enough (may need a new drive) or your blade is getting dull.
A2.I don't really know about show grooming but I just fluff the hair up and use my sissors to straighten it by sissoring down.
A3. You must have your dog 100% free of matts and tangles, you just choose wich length of snap on you want and use it over a 15 or 40 blade then you just clip as you normally would with the direction the hair is growing. ;) Hope this helps, thanks for the comment! :)
I heartily agree with nagulamcaw. I just wanted to see what a cocker cut looked like in case i try to trim one of my dogs and I watched all 4 of your videos thinking the whole time how clear and natural you made the process sound. I think Danny is so beautiful and sweet too. Cockers are my favorite dogs but I keep finding strays. One day...
That is very nice of you to say. Thank you very much I really appreciate it. I am glad to help owners take better care of their fur family. ;) Oh and good for you for helping the homeless pups out there!
I am really impressed with your videos. I have watched all and in addition to being very dedicated, loving and professional; I think that you should seriously consider making professional grooming videos to the trade and grooming schools. You really have a knack for speaking and connecting to the animals and person watching. I have learned so much! Excellent job! Maybe someday you will be on The Groomer Has It? ---?--? You will win!
Hahhahaha you are so nice to say that! I have thought about going on Groomer has it but I don't think I would do well. I really appreciate your comment though it means alot to me. Thank you so much for your kind words. ;) I am very glad you liked my videos too. ;)
That is actually really common in Cockers. ;) I suggest getting him used to touch before you try to sissor... when sleeping on the couch or whatever just give him a food massage and lots of treats and praise till he is comfortable with being touched then introduce the sissors slowly. Good Luck and I am sending you a message with a video in it about clippers and blades! ;) Hope they help!
hahaha thank you .. i dont even know what is comfortable for him.... going bonkers trying to figure out ... he's been so naughty... out of control.. he does whatever he wants...
Thanks for the compliment! I am really glad it helped. The more you do it the more she will get used to it. :) I have had Danny since he was a pup and he has been done about once a month for his whole life... sometimes more often depending on how much hair he has. :D Thanks again and give your Peaches a hug from me. :)
Thank you for the demonstration on the cocker cut. I am not a professional groomer, so seeing how it is done really helped me. Your dog was very patient with you. My dog Peaches is very hyper, so I do have trouble giving her trims.
