  • Dead at 40. Just doesn't seem right. Not at all.

  • Man I'm in amazement at these videos I went to school with Shawn Lane at Kingbury High. I saw him perform once at a concert at Kingsbury but after graduation I never saw him again, I found out he was dead at the Kingsbury class reunion in 2009. What a awesomely talented young man RIP!!!

  • I really don't know what to say but 'What a Loss'

  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus

  • 4:09 to the rest of that clip is fucking sublime. I feel like that's something that is better than music. That's called having a beautiful mind and being enough of a genius to be able to understand it and transcribe it and your thoughts into music... because that's not something that he sat down and fucked around with a bunch of scales, sounds, vibratos, slides, etc. to make.

If anyone still had the pleasure of the company of this man then they are one of the luckiest people in existence.

  • The most talented guitarist that ever lived.

  • To me Shawn Lane was the best just because he could balance feeling and technique so perfectly. Just listen to Gray Pianos Flying, Esperanto or Epilogue for Lisa and you'll know what I'm talking about.

  • hello would like to know how are called the songs that appear in this video. thanks

  • @matiasj2006

    0:50 - Get You Back

3:46 - Aga of the Ladies

    7:31 - Esperanto

    8:26 - Watermelon in Easter

    10:57 - Abstract Logic

    12:42 - Giant Steps

13:30 - Not sure if it has a name, it's an improv he did in Paris

    16:32 - Death Theme

  • I wonder how he gets that clean tone at around 4:50. Pretties clean tone I've heard.

  • he looks awersome with a beard!

  • @RediForKing Shawn Lane taught my guitar teacher so does that mean hes god now?

  • Does anyone know where the video took place at 14:00, and if he has any more material like this?

  • @Staplesz Its from the "Paris" DVD. You can get it on Amazon, I did and words can't describe it.

  • the best of the best...!!!!Q

  • what's the song at 16:33?

  • @nylonhead116

Shawn covering Ennio Morricone's "Death Theme":

    watch?v=suZaioXfYcQ

  • he was like an electric harp on steroids

  • 8:27 shawn lane playing frank zappa = heavan

  • i liked Buckethead's Quote about Shawn Lane... Buckethead rarely says anything.....

  • Shawn became overweight because his human shell could no longer support the alien body growing inside of him, shawns still makin music in space somewhere

  • @CaptainGill1 No one will ever be as good as him, the fact that you can make jokes when one of the world's greatest musicians passes shows that you have no taste in music, or respect for the departed. What are you into, NSync?

  • Shawn = God

  • @axismusicman Shawn Lane = God's guitar teacher

  • @axismusicman Shawn > God

  • woah this guy is amazing! But i prefer Guthrie Govan better but thats my just my pointless opinion.

  • you can never be the fastest .. but one thing he was .. a brilliant writer

  • with whom / what song is he playing at 4:00? its so chill! Shawn Lane Rules, I hope somebody knows where this is from, from the looks of him it was later in his career

  • @ProfQ

The song is called Aga Of The Ladies.

  • Someone needs to make a doc about his life so his genius can touch as many people as possible.

  • Incredable

  • Every time when I see Shawn Lane playing guitar I give hope up because I want to be as good as him. But then I realise that I shouldn't because Shawn is an inspiration and he should not be cloned.

  • Vinayakram bros. missing from Aga of the Ladies! Still good..and every time I watch the Esperanto clip I find myself amused at how the other pianist must be feeling. Also love the solo over Watermelon in the Easter Hay loop. I've been listening to Shawn for a while and I've failed to find anybody that comes close to his technical ability while maintaining 'musical honesty' as he called it. No unconditional positive regard is necessary here; his music speaks for itself.

  • I feel like such a loser for only hearing of this guy now. It's like someone just showed me the movie The Godfather and I said, "Um...did you make this yourself? this is amazing!" What was wrong with me that I had a chance to see this guy in his lifetime and I didn't do it? This might mean that right now there is something so emense and undiscovered in front of my eyes. I have to start seeing with my ears more.

  • Saying anyone who posts negative comments about Shawn is an idiot, or knows zero about playing the guitar is nearly as bad as saying anyone who plays fast has no feel/emotion. Musical appreciation is in the ear of the individual listener.

Shawn Lane is the best guitar player I have ever heard but no one dead, living, or god is beyond criticism or question.

  • Guitarist come in all styles and it is great to appreciate the whole spectrum of talent. Different strokes for different folks. Either way the man was talented and influenced many. Gods speed Shawn!!!! R.I.P.!!!

  • Shawn Lane and Buckethead FOREVER.

  • @judaspriestrock DUDE bh is shit comparing to sl

  • 13:31 Shawn basicly brings all of the tortured souls up from hell

  • 12:32 Awesome acoustic version of Giant Steps!

  • is that "watermelon in easter hay" i hear at around 8:30?

  • Lane was the very essence of music. Or music was the very essence of Lane. Lane was music and Music was Lane, they were one in the same.

  • When Shawn was in the Band Typhoid he is very young like 14 or 15 as I recall. I went to the house where they practiced and the sound guy turned me on to a song called ''Thunder Thighs'' And said Shawn had removed all the Frets from the 12th on up and was playing those leads fretless. I dont know but I always thought that was amazing for a kid to be doing

  • temporal analogues of paradise starting @ 3:55 ? i can't find the album this is on anywhere

  • @DeathZeroTolerance

That's Aga of the Ladies, not TAOP. You can find it on the album Good People in Times of Evil

  • Thank you Again This always brings Tears to my Eyes I know that SHAWN would be PLEASED!!!!! diane

  • 8:13...fast and accurate

  • @vilmeri1

probably one of the most mental things i have ever seen, he's not even looking at the keyboard! he's just walking away! i'm no piano player but i have a feeling that wasn't just white keys in that run at the end.

  • Really interesting to see the live footage when hes 15 years old , his technique had already surpassed so many people, but he was still developing. This was 78 around the time of van halen one, he had already copped all off ed's style which is pretty scary.

  • Not once have i mentioned Shawn is amazing becuase he is fast, it is not just the speed.

Shawn is the best because his phrasing is unique he chooses every single note perfectly.

his music is extremely emotive and soulful and to compare herman li to Shawn is rediculous Shawn is on another planet to herman. your right speed isn't everything but shawn doesn't just play fast he is a genius when it comes to chooses notes for a purpose not like herman li rubbish.

i'm not superman by the way.

  • Listen to Gray Pianos Flying.

  • You seem to think that more notes = less emotion. Remember that soul isn't about how long you can hold a note, or how many faces you can make while holding that note!

  • O.K

    1. I was just trying to make a point. Shawn Lane = awesome guitarist Li = crappy one.

    2. It isn't "random stupid sounding" it is based on music theory (i.e modes) and it sounds AMAZING.

  • Shawn Lane = Best shred metal guitarist ever.

  • lol its not metal XD not even close.

  • @TheKidGuitarist he didn't play metal

  • Rest in peace Shawn in our hearts!!!!

    Thanks for this excelent video!

    Juan Cortés

  • what is the song at 0:50?

  • Get You Back solo.

  • 4:12 and onward, buddy

  • Look up Mattias Eklundh, sick guitarist, WITH creativity

  • To all of the idiots who post negative comments about Shawn here: You obviously know ZERO about playing the guitar.

  • 10:20 -> it's huge...

  • song 0:52

  • "Get You Back"

  • can somebody tell me what guitar hes using at 0:13 to 0:25? any help would be highly appreciated :)

  • Ibanez ghostrider I think.

Was on ebay for about 100k

  • 100,000 bucks? holy shit!

  • I was him in Alfreds once while I was working a show on Beale. I just stood there amazed and haven't ever forgotten that moment. R.I.P.

  • Great job on the Memphis Monster that flew over everybody's head.

I especially like the Paris master clinic where he rips it

  • really good tribute

  • Alex Masi's quote is beautiful.

  • 26th. RIP Shawn. We love you

  • Today is the day we lost him---I miss you much, you continue to inspire me every day. You live on in our hearts and memories.

  • It's the death theme from the film The Untouchables

  • Hey, what is this beautiful song at the end ?

    Thanks.

  • Search for Shawn Lane Death Theme. :]

  • How does he play so quickly at the beggining?! i can barely see the frets they are so thin...

  • Great video!

Anyone know the song that starts at :50 seconds in?

    Thanks

  • thats the final solo of "get you back"

    enjoy :)

  • Get You Back

  • he always looks like hes feeling the music he plays =)

  • for the people saying batio and buckethead and cooley are better watch this entire video and they all praise shawn lane lol

  • all guitar players have their style, and are good (well anyones) you cant compare BH with SL because they are differents styles, and MAB with Shawn lane ETC

  • This video deserves more views

  • Dude... weak. Honestly I'm not gonna argue with anyone on a Shawn Lane video because that would be a disgrace to him... but MAB isn't better than Shawn Lane, just because he pretends to be playing 2 guitars at once doesn't make him better.

  • They're both good, and MAB doesn't pretend to play 2 guitars at once, he just does.

  • Dude buckethead gave him his bucket. thats some deep shit dude this man was amazing

  • I Prefer Buckethead.

  • and thats my pesonal opinion so yes!!

  • batio comment gets the win for me for mentioning Django. :) Lane truely belongs in that catagory of the best musicians to ever walk the earth, Bireli, Stochelo, Mozart, Bach, Django, Lane...fits perfect :)

  • Could someone also please tell me the name of the last song starting at 16:33, as I do not regonise it from my collection. Thanks.

  • There is a video of it here on youtube, i believe it is called "death theme" beautiful piece of music.

  • Thanks for this mate.

  • A fitting tribute to a very special man.

It often makes me so sad to know I will never speak to him or get to know more of him.

But then I just listen to him, and he speaks in volumes.

He has touched my life and continues to inspire me and countless others.

Much love and peace. Rest quietly Shawn.

  • Shawn is still definitely the best guitarist ever to have lived.

  • Hey now the title of "Powers of Ten" makes total sense! Who would have thought it was based on the scope of the universe? That's really deep, but to be expected from possibly the deepest thinker in music of our time. R.I.P. Shawn Lane!

  • awesome .. best guitarist of all time !

  • What is the name of the song he plays from 3:47 - 5:00? It's beautiful.

  • That song is called Aga of the Ladies,

I feel its one of Shawns best songs based on Indian Ragas.

  • What I like is that there was all this buzz about him and everyone wondered what he was going to do next, and he did this Frank Gambale meets Jeff Beck kind of music that is nice and pretty. And I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. There's enough metal shretal already.

  • when i was 15 me and my dad went down to memphis to see shawn in this tiny bar and he was so cool he even met up with us the next day to have lunch. he was an intellectual, a big history buff and super cool interesting guy.

  • that is a real treasure

  • this video makes me wanna cry :-(((

  • what a great man he was!

  • personally i think at the skill level of people like gilbert, buckethead, lane, becker, vai there is no competition at their level they all played what they fealt and thats all music is about. if you can do that and love every second of it then you are an accomplished guitarist.

  • buckethead will always be my favorite guitarist and i never thought id find someone who could match him until i found shawn lane, buckethead and shawn lane are my biggest influences.

  • What about Guthrie Govan,Howe,Bumblefoot??B.H.,is one of my fav's for sure but I think the closest guy to shawn in all aspects of guitar and music is Govan, but thats just an opinion of course.

  • i can kind of agree with the govan thing

  • Like,or dislike?I am stoked personally, because Ive been listening to Vai,Satch,petrucci,Etc..,for so many yrs Govan is a breath of fresh air.And for me the first guy to Shock and Awe me since S.Lane..But still love em all,and respect of course.

  • yeah i see you what your saying and govan is a huge fan of shawn lane. Govan cd erotic cakes to me is one of the best guitar solo cd's ive heard

  • I thought the same thing about Guthrie being a big fan of Shawn too, and as it turns out, it's not all that true. This guy alexkhan2000 tells me he's a rep for Suhr guitars, and says when he and Guthrie spoke, Govan admitted to him that he has NEVER heard any of the music that Shawn and Jonas did together... does that sound like a fan?! I felt let down a little... these are my 2 faves...REST IN PEACE GREAT ONE...

  • Wow, i hadn't heard that. I know Alex (real name "Ed Yoon") knows Guthrie quite well, but i find it hard to believe Guthrie hasn't even heard the "Time is the Enemy" track.

Alex Masi (the awesome guitarist) once said that he thought Shawn's playing and improv was so unbelievable on the "Time is the Enemy" title track, that he thought it should have been sent into outer space on a satellite like they did with Beethoven's 5th Symphony on the Voyager Satellite.

  • I agree, govan is the only player since shawn to have such a profound effect on a listener through an instrumental guitar album...

  • Very true. Lane was amazing and melodic, Govan is amazing and extremely out of the box. Both are just so amazing it's hard to describe. Both are the Bireli Lagrene and Django of the Rock world :P

  • Me too, man. Shawn and Buckethead, all the way :) I'm also a big fan of Govan, though. Have you checked out much of Bumblefoot's playing? If you're into Buckethead, you'll probably like Bumblefoot :)

  • what an awesome guy!!!R.I.P Shawn!!!!

  • My favorite moment is seeing the him come and during guitar wars and make everyone come unglued and unable to continue playing their instruments in time and they were all laughing at how hard is was to just be on the same stage and concentrate. It was like Dennis Rodman walking into a church service.

  • seeing him come in sorry I couldn't even type thinking about it lol

  • I developed a nice vibrato from spending years trying to sound like him. Everything else I was way off lol but hey if someone ever inspired people to play more guitar it was Shawn. He literally made stock in guitar strings worthwhile investments. Now look at all the strings.

  • I remember the day I first heard Shawn play. A friend of his had a tape of him playing live with Black Oak Arkansas and when I heard it my jaw dropped to the floor. When he quit BOA, he learned how to play the piano like a master. The years passed and Shawn just kept getting better and better. When I heard of his death in 2003, I was literally in shock for days.

RIP Shawn. You are still the greatest.

  • shawn lane was a funny guy and the best guitarist who's ever lived i know that it's stupid to say there's a best but i say he is the BEST

  • A fitting tribute to a guitar genius who showed you can be the best and still be one of the nice guys.

  • After the apocolypse sequence at 14:00 ...holy shit is all.

  • thanks for the lovely video. He was a true genius.

  • shawn has been a huge influence on my style of playing, thanks for putting this up

  • damn this made me cry.

  • R.I.P :(

  • Best Shawn Lane video I've seen, thanks.

I love how you ended it with the slow "non fast" playing. An "FU" to all of the people that say he could only play fast.

    Thanks

  • at 8:30 can anyone tell me what video on here this is off ?

  • search for "shawn lane watermelon in easter hay"

  • Thanks :)

Zappa, i should have recognized that..

  • no problem, can't get enough shawn lane fans!

  • I just want to thank "instrumentalcase"for posting this amazing video.Clearly alot of thought and effort went into this and it has really touched me as I miss Shawn more and more as each year passes.Gone but never forgoten,RIP Shawn..

  • ...rest in peace!!! Music is the religion!!! and shawn was on the gods...

  • As many times as I watched him play I wish I could go and see him one more time!

  • your lucky you got the chance to in the first place, i was still a little kipper when he died..

and i would do anything to turn back time to see him once

  • I have told this before in another comment section but it is worth telling again. I knew Shawn while growing up in Memphis and one night Shawn and another friend came to my house and we were all standing in the kitchen and I introduced Shawn to my dad saying ''Shawn is a guitar player in a band'' to which my dad replied to Shawn ''Well are you any good?'' With Shawns good nature and a little shyness he replied '' Well ,yeah'' ..

  • Shawn Lane, G.O.A.T.

    Forever missed but never forgotten.

  • thanks from Paris for this superb video

  • He makes a random improvised solo like that when he was 15 makes me even want to learn that

  • love you shawn

    happy birthday

thanks for the inspiration on my life

your music is part of me

    god bless r.i.p

    sebastian

  • What are the actual chances you'd have the same interview praising an artist a few decades later like the one we just heard at 2:13, with the artists chosen from modern day examples?

  • Fantastic vid - a lot of work went into this, and the result was great. The quotes were especially enjoyable....I mean, we've all heard Shawn play, so that was no surprise, but to read some of the things that others said about him was great.

    6 stars, at least.

  • This guy truly inspire me, wow...

He have such a deep soul

and dammit id like that kind of guitar sound.

  • sry... but the kid did have 99% the same name! sorry

  • shawn lane is an amazing guitarist and I get a lot of influence and motivation from him every day, but jeez he was fat! :\

  • Hey guys i am really new to this guitarist excuse me n00byness i am aware it says rest in peace is he really dead ???

  • yes:(

  • who is he referring to as 'him' at the end?

  • In case no one answered this question for you... The "him" Shawn refers to, his hero... Alan Holdsworth! AND did you post LANE vs GOVAN after seeing this tribute?!

  • i cant remember, but im a fan of govans work too, im getting a bit pissed off with the pessimistic attitude of some of the commenters on the govan vids. its ridiculous, i went to the insitute where govan teachs, i know him, he practicss ALOT, and all im trying to tell some losers are that if you practice, and mantain the right attitude then you have a chance at being in the same league.

  • You don't mean you're a fan of Govan too, you mean you're a fan of Govan only... so you met him...wow. Cuz if you were a fan of Shawn you would not have made the negative statements you made in all those personal messages to me.

  • first of all, im a fan of both, secondly, i didnt meet him, he was a teacher at the institute i went at for a year, so seeing him every other day, thirdly you clearly are misunderstood, i have not sent you any PMs or said anything bad about shawn. anyone who does is just a) asking for attention or b) shit at guitar. from now on i suggest you look at the names of the people who send you PMs,

  • Cuz it's like you purposely didn't display Shawns best suited material for a guitar competition... I'm sure I know why!!!

  • unless it was this freak who basically registered with almost the same name as mine and is acting like he didnt, posting on shawn lane and govan vids.. if so, you are just minderstood, in which case were on the same termsd :)

  • is that temporal analogues of paradise? around 4:40-5?

    great song.

  • shawn lane is pretty cool...some of his shreds were a little much but overall his shit was pretty good

  • Comment removed

  • What's real unfortunate is that there is actually people out there bashing Shawn Lane. If you type "Unholy Confessions," into youtube, it's the first video. "ryvrstone" felt that he had the need to bash Shawn Lane. That's too bad, actually made me sad, I mean... The man's DEAD. IF you are a Shawn Lane fan why don't you find this guy and drop him a profile post on what you think of him. Shawn Lane for life!!! (I'll post this on other Lane vids)

  • Well, I wouldn't suggest youtube stalking the guy for being a jerk to Shawn's memory and being. It's majorly disrespectful on that guy's part, but we can enjoy the experience Shawn let into this earth ourselves despite that guy :)

  • sorry eveyone, I keep posting strange things here, I am very mental, please forgive my other post here. I miss my gay partner

  • I have a psycho stalker... and here is the evidence... sad that your fragile mind and body enjoy the anonimity afforded here. I'm sure you would not say these words to me in person;)

  • Bucket gave the CROWN to the KING!

    RIP GREAT ONE

  • If you ever get a chance to get his Powers of Ten album from the early 90's, do it. It's just a wash of musical incredibleness. :)

  • Very good Shawn Lane tribute and very insightful. I'm amazed by this man's talent on guitar and piano plus he he sounded like such a nice guy and humble. I favorited this video. Thanks for posting.
