  • My mom makes a traditional French-Canadian breakfast "pie"/"casserole" type dish.

    She usually used shortening for the crust. But since I live in Japan, and she wanted to make the said dish with me, we didn't feel like spending a lot of money for one dish.

    We used lard instead and it was amazingly good. I would say lard is better than shortening by a landslide.
