How to force Windows Phone Update without Hack

Hi, I did this with my HTC HD7, and now that I need to talk with the supplier about another issue, they say that my warranty is voided because I forced the update. To me, this is utter bull. What do others think?

@jeffmparker Your warranty shouldn't be void if you did this. Basically you will only be able to do the update if your device is "ELIGIBLE" for this update. If Microsoft and T-Mobile + HTC didn't make it available for your phone then you wouldn't be able to use this technique to update. It will just say you're up to date.

All this does is force your phone to display the "update available" message sooner by using zune check as the over the air notification sometimes takes longer.

@jeffmparker I have t-mobile for example and i've done this on three devices and they all work fine. Some people when experiencing problems sometimes roll the update back and try again or hard reset if something really messed up. Doing this should not void the warranty as you are using MSFT tool to check for updates for the phone.

@DnBPrkOvrRace The sim shouldn't be the factor that let's you update or not. The carriers send out the updates to phones in waves. The method above usually forces the notification if that update is available to your phone. According to WinRummors - it should be already available.

@DnBPrkOvrRace I am not sure why you haven't been able to get the update. The SIM usually isn't a factor (other than connecting you to a carrier.) I know there's an update after that 7720 to fix keyboard issues - but it's also not showing me it yet nor has anyone I know gotten the update. Do you know anyone with a Mozart that has the update you're trying to get?

@Alexboooom sorry to get back to you so late.

You are supposed to hit disable when the computer is searching for an update. If done correctly - instead of getting the error that there is no internet and can't check - it will tell you there's an update available.

Hey @coldjava, I wasn't even aware that 7740 was out already. I just plugged in my phone and opened up Zune and got the notification on my phone saying an update is available.

It's updating as we speak. First time I didn't have to follow the steps on the video. :)

@kalamunding I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble but is it possible to provide your operating system, version/edition (ex: XP, Vista, 7) and your phone model/type? Also are you connecting the phone via USB or trying a different method?

@kalamunding This is a little of going back to basics but my first suggestion would be: 1) Turn of the phone and remove the battery for a few seconds. 2) Turn off the computer for a few seconds and then turn it on. 3) Turn on the phone. 4) Make sure the USB cable is the one that came with the phone and not another USB that fits and looks similar. 5) Make sure to connect directly to PC and not a hub. If it still doesn't work try connecting it to another PC to see if it's the phone or PC. GoodLuck

I did this and it was working great I got all the way up to 7.0.7403.0 update and went to do that it said I had to update Zune before I could update the phone so I did now this wont work no matter how many times I try IDK what to do now?

Awesome guide. works great, but if you didn't happen to check youtube, Microsoft, Samsung, and your wirless provider will not help you.... It's why I just got a non-windows phone, keep my samsung focus as a back up

Hey everyone, just letting you all know that this method worked on my Omnia 7 and I am updating as I type to Nodo (v 7.0.7392.0). I will wait till I get the notification for Mango though, just in case. I am with Optus Australia and I had to wait around 4 seconds before I disconnected the internet connection. :) Atleast Ill have copy and paste, right? haha any things better than 7008 =="

WOW this worked for me, well I had read about the forced update but I couldn't do it till I watched your video. I had trouble with disconnecting. Also didn't occur to me to turn off the wi-fi. And yes I got the 2 common things (phone up-to-date and connection error) but it worked in the end :D

@rikkoisnotsuave so far this method has worked for many users to force push update notification for all the windows phone 7 updates including mango. There have been people reporting small adjustments on timing of disconnecting the pc from the network to trigger the notification along with variend number of tries.

However, Omnia 7 seems to be impervious to this method.

@tacomanhat I'm not sure what could be the problem. Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for Zune and if so do you have any applications that could be hogging the computer's memory?

My first recommendation is usually to restart your PC and start the application by itself to see if the error is duplicated or bypassed.

Worked on T-mobile HTC HD7. I also had trouble with airplane mode and wifi both off -- so I followed macke667's advise and activated wifi. Worked on the first try.

It seems that in the deactivation of the network, timing is crucial. You must deactivate your LAN or WIFI when the update bar in zune is about halfway.

Nvm :) got it to work. Had to deactivate airplane mode and activate wifi though. Tried for hours with airplane mode on and wifi disabled and minutes without it

seems to work for HTC Mozart. Took a few goes getting the update screen to appear. I found that it worked when I gave the update check a few seconds to run, before disabling the Local Area Connnection, instead of rushing to do it as fast as possible.

Follow basically every steps in this video, but before you click the "update" button part. Check if the "feedback" in settings is on, if not, switch it on and continue with update section in this video.

Waiting upto 6-8 seconds, depending on your connection speed, seems to help. I tried 2 seconds trick and failed a few times until I finally got it going with 6-8 seconds wait.

For those struggling to receive the update on their phones, let me summarize the steps this video.

1. Turn wifi "OFF" on ur windows phone

2. Turn "ON" airplane mode on your windows phone

3.Connect ur windows phone to your computer

4. Open ur Zune application, Open ur "wireless connection" application

5. On Zune, click settings and click update then QUICKLY (quickly..meaning within a second r two) disconnect ur internet connection.

6. Wait for update to show up

7. Connect internet & update phone

Did you make sure WI-FI is OFF and Air Plane mode is ON? Some users were having trouble because they didn't think that would matter but somehow it does.

hold on, when you get the error no conneection are you then supposed to turn your network back on and try again or just keep going on and off the update thing?

@lovesbuttsex You turn the connection off in order to force the glitch that displays "Update Available". Sometimes it takes a few tries. When I updated my phone this time around I managed to do it in one try, however when I updated my mother's (Also an HTC HD7) it took me over 8 tries.

So if you get the error "No connection, please check it" etc - restore the connection then try the process again.

@randerson79 Unfortunately I don't have a mac to try it. I did attempt to do it on 9/26 before the update released on a Mac but my failed attempt does not necessarilly mean it's not possible.

You can borrow some's PC for an hour and try it... :)

@Unieb1 Version 7.0.7392.0 is the version before Mango. You should be able to download the Mango multi-part download by following the above steps. Although it seems that the process doesn't work on some phones like the Omnia (reported bellow).
