very nice tutorial i just literally started trying to play guitar (5 mins ago) and got the very beginning hoping to learn the rest later =) first song to learn thanks to this guy
havent watched this video in almost two years this is the video that started me with playing metallica best video on youtube thank you so much mattster you rule!
@Azonderu keep playing its not that hard even if you have an accoustic the part after the beggining isnt to bad i rember when i learned this on accoustic just the clean and distorted intro and verse took me a week to learn it but trust me when u get it its the best feeling in the world
This is *THE* best guitar lesson on youtube. Great job and thanks! Also, this is the funnest riff to play and I will now play it for 3 hours straight.
This is *THE* best guitar lesson on youtube. Grea job and thanks! Also, this is the funnest riff to play and I will now play it for 3 hours straight.
At around 5:45 i cant tell what is supposed to be muted on the tail part.... oh and dude everything i know how to play i learned from you. big thanks to you!!
you are realy metal dude! just keep play metal and im the one who continue to support, i've watch your video when you and your bandmate was played its awessome,.....MORE POWER TO ALL HEAVY METAL!
@Bleue95 ..because he holds out the open g and all the other notes. it wont be there if he didnt play it in the studio. im in a band and we record. i know wat im talking about.
@MUSICFAN9090 the / means its a slide...i figured that out after watching a lot of videos and putting two and two together. no worries, it happens to all of us.
wow you made so simple and easy i love this song one of my top 5 fav's or metallica now i can play 3 of them thanks would of took me two day to get through the tab
Spent more time on this and really working with your instructional. I'm getting it. And it sounds NICE. I've been playing guitar for only 2 months now. I have a lot of work to do but your video helps me sound like I've been playing for at least a few years. I'm 38, starting late. Always wanted to play guitar, never got around to it until now.
@avatarcollides2day dude I'm sorry if I made you angry, I'm just trying to say something nice... I do realize your 10, and I don't doubt that you can play it better than me, but that comment wasn't supposed to be for bragging, I was just saying nice things about the creator of this video. Oh, and congratulations on learning it so fast! :)
@jakeludwig91 the whole meaning with the intro is that you should let the strings ring out as much as it goes, but if you think that a open G sounds to ringy, play the fifth Fret of the D-string (It's the same note as a open G, And infact James plays the fitfh on the d live.)
Not really a small amount is the norm but if its as long as you are saying theirs something wrong.... not that i am way better but thats my just opinion
@kidkaptain you mean slide UP. its reversed, remember? are u asking how to slide? all you have to do is pick the 2nd fret on the 5th string and while the note is still ringing just drag the tip of your finger firmly across the other frets and stop at the 7th fret. thats it. youre not supposed to lift your finger off of the string or the note will stop ringing. just make sure you apply enough pressure to the string so the note sounds clean. u get it? idk if i answered u right.
@warlockmetal1 ok, but when i try that i usually get to the 7th fret but then when i strike for the 7th fret it barely makes any noise. :P should i press hard the whole time i'm sliding?
@kidkaptain your only supposed to strike once-on the 2nd fret. Then you slide to the 7th fret while the note is still ringing. When you reach the 7th fret, the note should still be ringing from when you struck the 2nd fret , except since your finger has slid to the 7th fret, thats the note the strike will be playing now. in order to keep the note playing strong and loud, yes you are supposed to keep your finger pressed firmly against the string.
@kidkaptain No, your actually not supposed to change fingers. You can use either your index our middle finger to start with, but thats the finger you have to stick with for the entire slide. If you change fingers, then that means you are likely to mess the whole thing up. Personally, I use the middle finger for the slide from 2nd to the 7th fret so that I then have my index finger free to do the -6-5- part after the slide...
There are many kinds of amps out there, are there any broad/generic settings to get a similar sound that would span a series of amp models? i.e gain/bass/mid/treb and reverb.
Im a beginner at guitar. And thanx to you I found out what palm muting is I got a question though. Could the type of guitar affect the sound. I have a peavey amp and I cant get it to sound quite like you make the sounds. Could you msg me and explain please. Like I said im a beginner so dont dis me please. And your great at teaching this stuff. It aint taking me that long to learn the strings thanx to you.
@KP5142 yo dude the sound you get when playing guitar depends on the amp and guitar pickup in your guitar. I have only been playing about 1 year or so and i have a roland cube X15 its a pretty good starting amp has got a good enough sound 4 a beginner and gives you can get the sound you want. but if you want an even better sound a marshall amp has a more classic rock sound and its more expencive make so it will be much better. I cant tell you muh about pick ups but they affect the sound as well.
tnks!!, i have tried to learn this song for ages and i finally learned it tnks 2 you, u are the best!!

I was in your position a few months ago.. and having learned the intro felt like an accomplishment back then.
Now I'm watching this vid after such a long time and the rest of the song is coming to me rather easily.
Keep at it, 20-25 mins of guitar a day and its only a matter of time before you can start playing various songs like this.
