Anyone have any tips on strings (guage?) or guitar setup for tuning that low? Are they running 7-string type strings (but without the high string)? Or just tuning down heavy guage standard strings?
@nanomaton I think they probably use heavy guage strings (.12 - .52). I play in Drop B tuning quite a bit and I use Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky strings (.11 - .54), which work better for me because the top strings are thinner (which means string bending is less of an effort) and the low B is a bit thicker which helps with intonation. I would use a .70/.72 for the low F# that Isis use sometimes.
@urmumsbaps The Sunn Cab looks like a late 60's 2x15, or maybe not, I can't be certain if it's that wide. The head, I'm certain is an older version of the CL. Although I think he switched it to an Ultra-Lead for Wavering Radiant, 'cause they use KT88 tubes and they have a fatter and thicker sound than the el34 tubes that the CL uses. Hope that helps.
This video was really, really helpful. I've been wanting to get into playing metal for ages but having never learnt guitar nor having much knowledge of equipment, I am a total noob. Even just having a reference point in terms of gear to get an idea of what makes that thick, chunky sound Isis/Pelican etc have (which is what I love) is a really great starting point. Thank you :)
@andrewwowk a fuzz pedal into a tube amp with lower gain on the fuzz and lots of volume can get the sound possibly. I've heard pelican relies heavily on speaker distortion. lol just raise bass and mids up high and put the treble where it sounds good to you. a good bit of volume helps with the sound too... XD
@6StringAxeMoFo The keyboardist/guitarist Bryant Clifford Meyer is in Red Sparowes (went to see them last month, they were amazing), Mike Gallagher (guitarist) has recently wrote a score with his MGR project for a movie entitled "22nd of May" and Aaron Turner (Vocalist/guitarist) is in a band called Mammifer, not too familair with them. You're welcome! Red Sparowes are definetly worth checking out, they came out with a new album not that long ago.
@sketchbager yeah the drums are awesome. especially oceanic and panopticon. i read a great description of the production for one of em, its out there on the net somewhere.
Weird.. listening to the albums I thought they're some tech freaks who have knowledge about anything when it comes to effects and so forth. But they don't even use distortion pedals lmao. Never the less.. Isis is more and more becoming one of my favorite bands.
Would love to see a Cynic gear tour though.. these guys are crazy!
@DMTfabric: Not necessarily. There are some great distortion pedals and I tried a lot of expensive amp distortion sounds who mainly sucked. But well.. it's all a matter of taste in the end. (:
It was kinda a joke but kinda not, live there not note perfect(who is?) so with the reverb echoing the notes and adding the new it masks the messy stuff in the playing, its pretty handy that way ha ha an amazing live band finally got to see them live last year and even though Aaron had monitor problems they rocked it!
hes just joking because reverb is more distorted so the notes fuse together more. I think he just meant they need it to make their sound. The sloppiness he was referring to was in live performances if he was serious.
reverb is essentially a lot of short delay signals blended together, so that all the delay signals ring through as one. if you think about this you'll understand what they mean by covering their sloppiness, but.. isis really aren't that sloppy.
if you're bad at timing/rhythm, cranking the reverb may make it seem like you're more 'in the pocket' with the rest of the band, but it will also sound really.. reverb-y. not cool.
It's a shame they don't make the RV-3 anymore. By the way, I highly recommend watching the Clearing the Eye video from ISIS, all live stuff. Very badass.
Yea i have been bidding on them for the past two weeks, they all end up going for over 100 and i am a little weary of buying a ten year old pedal, even though i have had a couple boss pedals for almost that long. They do last but 100 bucks is a little steep. I think i will end up with the giga delay. I have a jvm205c amplifier and it seems to be picky with effects. Thanks for the info though.
@DrumBum561 the pickup toward the headstock..there is a bridge pickup, it is closest to where the bridge is located - where the strings stop? idk, the bridge...haha. the headstock is where the little turny knobs are.
According to wikipedia, though, he uses the following: BOSS TU-2, BOSS DD-5, BOSS RV-3, BOSS PS-3, BOSS BF-3, BOSS GEB-7, Fulltone Bass-Drive.
his Musicman and Sage basses were mentioned before.
afaik he is endorsed by Aguilar. when I saw ISIS some time ago he played through an AGUILAR DB751 and an AGUILAR DB285JC TWEED, not sure about that though.
Comin' back to the tuning, as other people said before, if you use very thick strings, the tension will be normal at low tunings, even in guitars with short scale( like Les Pauls). In my band, the whole guitar(a SG) is tuned in G#, and the low E, in F#. It' s the lowest I could tune without fuck the tone.
fucking dickheads. act like there oblivious to there own equiptment. fuck no.. they know there shit all too well. and they know there "badasses" . even though i think panopticon and oceanic is there last best work. besides this absence of truth non-sence and wavering aka "absence left overs". yes i said! i'll say it again....
Yea, it's DADGBD down a step and a half. Guys like Neil Young and Jeff Beck use the D version of that tuning, and Isis simply tune it down. You get a nice open major chord with the top 4 strings, and it's really easy to get some more dissonant tones with the lowered E string.
i couldnt tell who you were repyling this to, but are you saying that DADGBD is the isis tuning?(im sure you know that its not but i just want to check... sorry)
great video thanks for sharing .. the only thing is that i wish the rest of the band were interviewed so we could get insite into their setups (gearing towards aarons drum set up...)
they probably change guitars because they can..haha..and yea i own the dvd..they probably just wanted to make sure they were in tune at all times since they were recording a dvd
They tune a lot because mostly they play short scale guitars: LPs and Teles. I play in the same tuning (because we might be doing some ISIS covers soon) on a regular scale. With the right string gauge, the guitar stays in tune pretty good.
12-54 elixirs, I'd put on something heavier, but the next elixir is like 68 baritones, which's over the top... I'm currently using DM 12-56 and I think I'll switch back to Elixirs
the only thing is that for example if you tune a bass that low you can hardly play it with fingers... it's stupid, sloppy strungs are unplayable, except if you cant play anyways, then it wont make a difference
if they however use thicker strings like from 7string-guitars / 5 string basses, then i d wonder how the instrument deals with that
You can adjust for all that. Truss rod adjustments for neck relief so those super heavy strings don't warp the neck, and I guess they'd also have to file the tuning peg holes and nut to make them fit.
I play in a sludge/post metal band called Sky Hunter and their tuning isn't that dissimilar from the tuning I use.
